It's no secret that I'm not a fan of West Virginia. I have been unhappy from the moment I set foot in this state and I will be unhappy until I get the HELL out of here. But......

Tomorrow my hubby has a telephone interview for a job in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I really want him to get this job and he was very excited about it until he got a call to interview for a job in Marion, Illinois.

Baton Rouge is a GS-13 job as the associate director of a very large outpatient clinic. We would be home (basically). Back in the South where we want to be, but it would be the end of his career. He would never even look for anything to further his career because he wouldn't want to take me away from my home again. Very noble. :)

Marion is a GS-14 job as the associate director of a hospital. I know nothing about Marion, IL except that there is a Supermax prison there. (scary) If he takes this job, he can then apply for a GS-15 associate director position and move on up to an SES director position (possibly).

The point is I want to go home to Louisiana and so does he, but how can he ignore the possiblity that his career could get a major boost with the Illinois job?

*sigh*

Well after seeing the movie "Wrong Turn" I don't blame you for wanting to get out of that state. :scared:

I guess the best advice I can give is you have to go where the money is. :) At least I would.......

I can't tell you what to do but, If it were me, I'd want to go where my heart wants me to be. I'd want to be where I'm happiest, somewhere 'familiar'. If a higher paying position is in the cards later on, then it will materialize. Money isn't everything to me, money can't buy happiness. Wherever you decide to go, I wish you both the best. :)

I can't tell you what to do, but for me I'd take the place which would make you guys happier instead of the higher paying job. for myself I sometime's apply for lower paying jobs if it looks like it's something I want to do or is in a place 'd like to live.

For me, I figure life is moving pretty quicky now, I will be retiring in 10-15 years , have a reasonable amount of assets, so my overall happiness is now more important than career advancement. I just watched my co-worker who had the same job as me, take a job as a Director in Toronto in direct charge of 500 people and he asked my why I never had any interest in applying. I just have no interest in living in big cities, or having that much responiblity and additional workload. For me I just want to live a quiet stressfree life , and I'm too old to be worrying about career advancement if I can live a comfortable life.

It's not all about career advancement. I'm sure the Louisiana job will be more than fulfilling even though promotional prospects are nil. Best of luck with your decision!

Is the extra money a necessary thing? If you guys aren't hurting for cash, I wouldn't go anywhere but home. Think about it this way: in 20 years, will you wish you had more money or wish you were happy for the past 20 years?

I've been to several nursing homes, jen, and I gotta tell you, no one ever says, "I want to go to the bank."

UPDATE:

Greg had his interview with the Baton Rouge people. He felt it went very well. They called him today and would like him to come down there for a face-to-face interview with the BMOC (or in this case, the BWOC :D The director of the clinic is a woman.) We're trying to finagle a way for me to go with him. Maybe we'll get to see our friends.

The interview with Marion is this Friday.

Hey,
We just moved up here from La. to Virginia. I love it here, but understand the dislike for WV. We lived in Natchitoches and Baton Rouge. My wife was born and raised in BR.
Hope it works out for you!
