View Full Version : Favorite arcade games of the 80's
Does anyone remember the arcade game, "Jungle King" ?
I'm almost positive that was the name...(Early 80s)
It was one of my favorites... the first round you swung on vines avoiding alligators under you... (you had to time the swinging of the vines just right or you would fall) 2nd round - you ran up these rocky hills and you had to time it just right to jump over rolling boulders coming at you... 3rd round.. I seem to remember these headhunters with spears dropping the girl that you are supposed to try to save into a boiling pot... (I never saved her, as you can tell)
I also liked "Golden Axe" (late 80's)
You got to choose whether you wanted to be the strong guy, the tough woman, or the little wizard elf... and you had different magic powers with each one.. The man used "boulder" magic, the woman used "fire" magic, and the elf used "lightening" magic... and the guy at the end you had to beat was named "Death Adder" He was awesome! I did beat that game a few times... using the 2 player option... I needed some help.. and lots of quarters so I could keep continuing where I left off!
Of course, Frogger was a favorite for some time, and The Goonies video game was cool. Ms Pac Man, (which I have been frequenting the arcade section of this message board often to play)
and does anyone remember SUPER Pac Man? You chomped hamburgers the first round.. and you ate Spuer Pac Pellets that made you BIG! Other rounds followed with different types of food... I never really saw that arcade game in many places.. my local skating rink had it for a while.
Pole Position was kinda fun because you always had to "Prepare to Qualify".. but 90s racing games were much cooler... (4X4 Off Road was awesome)
Tron was kind of lame.. but I always played it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
Double Dragon was cool for a while, too! I got real good at using the elbow move.. which always knocked them out quickly...(I always needed a partner to finish that game, too, and lots of quarters)
I was an arcade game junkie in the 80s... anyone else?
Refresh my memory on some cool games!

Roemello 1-25-01, 02:05 AM Oh man...I loved all those http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif A few more of note: Black Tiger (kinda medieval), Punch Out, Hogan's Alley, Altered Beast...there's tons!
I remember that jungle game too...I have the atari version called "Jungle Hunt"
By the way....you can get all those original arcade games and play them right on your PC for free! No hardware required! A beautiful thing called ROM emulation http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif If you need more info on that, let me know...

Sal Collaziano 1-25-01, 02:08 AM Hmm. Jungle King.. Could you mean Donkey Kong? Or maybe even Pitfall? Golden Axe I never played. But I DO remember it being REALLY popular! Frogger! I never got into it until my Atari and Commodore 64! Yeah, I loved that game! The Goonies - no.. I never played that.. Ms. Pac-Man. Well, I didn't play a lot of it back then but I DID however play A LOT of Pac-Man! I used to get to the keys! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Oh, and I'm glad to see that somebody plays our arcade games here! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I never played Super Pac-Man.. I don't think I played Tron until the Commodore 64. Even now, I don't really remember it... Double Dragon. Nope! But I was a Kung-Fu Master addict!
Yes! I was an arcade junkie in the 80s! I played A LOT of Gyruss! Almost every day.. I turned it over a few times before retiring... I played Spy Hunter very often.. Star Wars was cool. Galaga was very cool! Before those games there was Space Invaders, Galaxian, Berzerk!, Astroids, Wizard of Id.. I can't think of anymore right now but there were a tun! I have them all on a CD of roms nowadays. They even say "Insert Coin"! I love that stuff! Roemello has 'em too, I believe... Maybe I'll have to send you the CD, Tinajo. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Yep... Thanks Roemello!! It was Jungle Hunt!! Not Jungle King... it didn't sound right when I said it, but I knew you could help me out!
I did like Pitfall as well on the Atari, but Arcade games were my big thing
Roemello 1-25-01, 02:32 AM No probs http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif I definitely preferred the arcades too, but when you ran out of money...Atari and later Nintendo came in handy http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

ReagansRenegade 1-25-01, 10:59 AM Hey guys! I'll have to get a PC to play those arcade games.
This is a cool site: http://www.classicgaming.com Check out their SpyHunter review in "Past Games of the Week"- they got pictures of the control panel and the steering wheel! SpyHunter is likely my favorite memory of arcade games.
Anyone ever play Legendary Kung Fu Masters? Aka: Yie Ar Kung Fu? My cousin once got through the entire game, when it resets. I never got pass Tonfun myself!
Roemello 1-25-01, 05:28 PM Isn't Kung Fu Masters the one with the baby ninja looking guys? Pretty sure I finished that on the Nintendo version...
Brainstorm a few more memorable games....Asteroids, Galaga, Joust, Defender, Tempest, Rastan...

trishmrn 1-25-01, 06:56 PM Hopefully one of you can help me...I am trying to think of the name of a game I played alot...but since I am over 30 now, my Sometimers is kicking in. The game was like a breakout with a wall of "bricks" that you had to remove by hitting them with a ball. Some of the bricks were different colors and had special features like....turning the ball into 3, making your paddle longer etc......someone mentioned berzerk, I don't think that is it, but like I said I have completely drawn a blank.
Thanks, Trish
Trish.. no idea... does sound somewhat familiar.. but I can't help ya on that one. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif
I did like Donkey Kong 3 (arcade)
And I was pretty good at Kung Fu Master as well!
I also liked the arcade version of Super Mario Brothers... (before Nintendo was out and nothing like the Nintendo version)... you could play 2 players, (be either Mario or Luigi) and you had to hit the platform just under the enemies (sidesteppers, fireflies, turtles) and flip them over, and then run up to the top of the platform and kick them off...
Then there was the big POW button that you could hit to flip them over.. and I always waited until player 2 was getting ready to kick one off and I'd hit the POW so that the enemy would flip back over and kill my opponent.... he he he very sneaky....
I liked Galaga and Gauntlet too!
Still thinking of more .....
Tina http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//spin.gif
Roemello 1-26-01, 01:58 AM To answer Trish's question...I believe that was Arkanoid! another great game http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
That Mario game is actually a Nintendo game as well...it's called just "Mario Bros." instead of "Super Mario Bros." They actually did make it for the console system too eventually.
Gauntlet...I remember that one too. One day the arcade game at the mall was opened up, so me and a couple friends got to play for free for a long ass time by jiggling the little coin handle inside http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif Ah...those were the days http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

"The only true knowledge exists in knowing, that you know nothing"
ReagansRenegade 1-26-01, 07:04 PM Rastan- thats that Conan type game right? Oh that one was PERFECT for a mall or movie house. People talk alot about what made the game so good- my opinion was the sprite size and dimensions, the speed and timing of the main character with his sword (countered by his slow jumping. all timing factors helped make it work) and the wizzy crystalline sound effects' admixture to the subtle background music. Most of all you got to play as Conan slaying lizard men. Where's my PhD? Why don't people publish fanzines anymore damn internet!
Hey there was a game where you played as a bi-plane, it was one or two players. One version was a table top sit-down and it was located at the late great pizza place near here. The eye blowing thing was- the background would change as your plane lifted up into the clouds to blast enemies, or when it would dive to blast them between buildings. They just don't innovate anymore!
Roemello 1-27-01, 03:23 AM Never have I seen such in-depth insight into a game http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif Rastan is pretty fun though...I got that bad boy for my ROM emulator http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif Insert coin? bah! ReagansRenegade 1-27-01, 03:18 PM I would buy a PC just to play that mystery bi-plane shooter. But really Roem- without the cigarette burns over the game screen, the smell of millions of greasy pizzas, the brilliant glare of the sun through the storefront, and the sounds of cash registers, muzak and shouting Italians, can you REALLY call it an "emulation"? No. No i believe some things demand priceless authenticity.
Roemello 1-27-01, 04:12 PM True...I got a sound sampler though, so if I really wanted to, I could emulate the entire atmosphere (minus the crowds of people, cigarette burns, and greasy pizza smells http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif) http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

Well, you have given us all something to ponder.
What about pinball games!
My favorites include the barbarian themed ones, the playboy one (apparently designed with children in mind since my quarters lasted so long) and does anyone recall one where you had to make poker hands on the backboard for points? Now THAT was cool. Pinball is so underrated.
Roemello 1-29-01, 11:57 AM Pinball kicked ass for sure http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I don't remember the names of 'em, but I did play them every now and then. One that I really loved (although I believe it came out in the early 90's) was Terminator 2 http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

Sal Collaziano 1-29-01, 12:46 PM I've played Terminator 2. I also played a Star Wars pinball game which I only needed about a dollar for hours of play. I got so good at it that I could hit just about anything I wanted at any time. I don't know why I was so good at this particular one.. Not sure.. But it was fun!

ReagansRenegade 1-30-01, 04:38 PM There is no faking or simulation in pinball- you are doing real things with real objects! There are electronic components to be sure, and they add a great deal of excitement and depth to the overall experience- but twisting and turning ramps, inclines and metal on metal and rubber, targets you can knock down, ect.- these things are not simulated. It's really a crying shame that pinball is not what arcades center around anymore- they were phased out by videogames but now no one is playing much of those videogames, and companies like Atari constantly cancel the release of truely innovative videogames to the arcades, like "Freeze" (which was like tetris with fish, animated player characters, and a theme where you had to melt certain fish or have them thrown over at your opponnent) and things that would have been classics that were never produced- can you imagine if Frogger was never released? Well there are many Froggers that will remain unreleased, and of course lost and forgotten in dusty warehouses. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00angry.gif
So at least pinball should be given the credit it's due. Maybe that will save the arcade industry- but to be honest if you've been in one lately you can understand why normal people tend not to bother!
I am trying to think of how nuclear weapons can be applied as a solution to this conumdrum- maybe if we brainstorm.
Sal Collaziano 2-01-01, 04:35 PM Actually, when I go into a gameroom these days - I see nothing cool at all. Nothing. Not one game I want to play. I think they should just stick the old games back in there and be done with it. If you want to play a new game, you don't go further than your PC or Playstation type of console...

Skee ball rules! About 15-20 minutes from where I live there's this kick ass little amusement park type place. There's two big arcades...one has regular games, the other has skee-ball, Bingo (the one where you roll the balls into the holes), one of the basketball game thingys, and one of those bowling games where you slide a metal puck into the plastic pins http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif If you score high enough in those, you get tickets to redeem for little trinkets and such http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

I want to try Rush'N Attack, Rastan, etc. It's reason enough to get a PC! But these games at least deserve a decent joystick. I heard most PC joysticks were a little junkie, and mostly flight controllers or joypads. Oh well http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Hey there.
I loved Space Invaders, and Frogger. My absolute fav. was Q-bert. In some of the machines, when Q-bert fell off the board, there would be a klunk in the bottom of the machine.
Does anyone remember this game that you played like you were in the olympics? One game you would run a race, in another you did the discus throw. There were other competitions, but those are the ones I remember.
Sal Collaziano 2-20-01, 06:59 PM Yeah, Space Invaders was awesome! Frogger was cool. Q-Bert was great! No, I've never played the arcade game with the klunk! That sounds cool! hehe Only in the 80s! Tina, did you know that you can play some of these games right on your pc? The actual roms can be loaded on an emulator program and many of the coin operated games can be played and look and sound like the original thing because it actually is the original game itself! It's kinda cool. One of the more popular game emulators is MAME (multi arcade machine emulator). You'll have to search for this on the web. Downloading the roms may not be technically legal unless you happen to own the actual arcade game, although i've heard they're quite abundant on the web. Also, there's an emulator for the Atari 2600 and SuperNintendo (that I've tried anyway) and they're great! There's an emulator for about every old game system. Something worthwhile to check out. Trish, I think that breakout game you were referring to is probably the 2600 Super Breakout. Great game. It was just like breakout but you had moving walls if you wanted and more complex boards, some that would move toward you. You can download that one as well for Stella, a decent Atari emulator! ;-)

I can't believe nobody remembered my favorite game from the 80's....Dragon's Lair! I blew so many hours and quarters on that game it's a crime! I never killed the dragon either! Always made it to the lair, but the dragon would always kick my ass! I hear that the trilogy (DL I & II and Space Ace) are coming out for Playstation 2. Hmmm...another reason to buy the PS2!
Roemello 2-21-01, 02:15 AM Wasn't that the game that was on laser-disc and played like a cartoon? If that's the one I'm thinking of, that one definitely ruled!!

I love tetris, robocop, and super mario bros. <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0">
Actually, on the Jungle King/Hunt topic, the graphics were SLIGHTLY different. In "King" - your character was a Tarzan looking guy, the "Hunt" it looked like Mr. Livingston. They might have been put out by two different companies, you saw that a lot in the 80s with video games.
Anyway, my top 5 80s Video Games:
1. Bump N' Jump - The key to this was knowing that crashing NO enemy cars in a round got you 50,000 bonus points. Thats more difficult than it sounds.
2. Venture - Simple, but playable.
3. Moon Patrol
4. Star Wars
5. Atari Football
You are correct about the Jungle King/Hunt topic... I noticed that too..

Darkside 9-30-01, 11:51 PM Dig Dug and Galaga were my two favorite games of the 80's.
Sarasunshine my favorite was Centipede too! That game was addictive. I skipped school once to defend my top score (Castanza anyone LOL)
Mirrorball Man 10-11-01, 12:24 AM My two favorite games of the 80s were laserdisc games : Dragon's Lair & Space Ace.
Both those games are available in DVD versions that you can play with your DVD remote.
Roemello 10-11-01, 03:23 AM Are you serious? Dragon's Lair on DVD? Now just to be positive before I go looking for this...is it DVD-ROM or a regular DVD for a standard player?
Go ahead and order them, Roem. They play as regular DVD's on a standard player. They do retail for $35, but they should be the exact LD versions.
Dragon's Lair 1 & 2 and Space Ace are out now.
They are available through DVD Express (http://www.dvdexpress.com)
