View Full Version : Your favourite system??
I had the Atari System. I had a cheesy hockey game from Activision that I played everyday. I also played Pacman and Defender on my precious Atari.
In the late 80's I got myself a Sega Master. I simply couldn't believe the graphics. They were awesome. Wonderboy was my favourite on the Sega Master!!
What was your favourite system?? And what games on it made you forget about homework and dinner??

Atari 2600. Adventure. No comparison. I even knew how to find the easter egg w/credits in it.
I lusted after Intellivision, and my brother had a 5200, but nothing will ever compare to the 2600.
I was grounded when PacMan came out. My dad played that game incessantly. I can still hear the cheesy sounds. Bloop bloop bloop blee blee blee blee bloobloobloobloobloo. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

Roemello 6-07-00, 02:06 AM Atari 2600 was the best in the early 80's. Then a little further on came 7800 which was even better (still got that one http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif). But my favorite overall in the 80's was Nintendo. Got one around '86 and was hooked. That thing blew every other system out of the water! To this day, I'm still loyal to the big N...it's the only console I'd ever buy.

Archie Bunker 8-14-00, 08:14 PM I was born in December 1981, so Atari, Intellivision, and all the others are a little before my time. I got a Nintendo in '87 or '88. My favorite games were Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros (all 3) The Legend Of Zelda, Mega Man (1-4 on nes and the Mega Man X series on snes and playstation) CastleVania (all of them) and Ninja Gaiden 1-3.
------------------
Roemello 8-16-00, 05:05 AM All the classics...all those series definitely kicked. Punch Out was another good one. I felt like the king of the world when I kicked Mike Tyson's ass for the first time /ubb/smilies/smile.gif Zelda was definitely the best...14 years later, it's still a popular game as a rom.

ReagansRenegade 8-24-00, 07:21 PM I never think of the NES as an 80s "toy"- simply because i didnt play or even SEE one until 1988. When i think 80s games i think 2800. I remember my mom bought it for me. I played asteriods for a bit- but hey i have standards! So i went over to my friend Jeff's basement where Ka-Boom!, Crazy Capers (im not sure thats right- its where you play a cop chasing a burglar in a mall up endless flights of stairs, elevators, ect., dodging falling objects and jumping over stuff)- and of course Decathalon! They game was very difficult because i was pretty young and you had to wiggle the joystick back and forth like a lunatic. I enjoyed watching even more then i enjoyed playing.
My grandpop used to play Space Invaders when no-one was home and he acted embarresed when we came back to find him playing, but we thought it was cool :-)
The best part of videogaming for me at that time (since then only Metal Gear Solid seems worth my time) were the arcades!
Spy Hunter was "mine" at the 7-11. I never got far enough to all the gadgets you could get- you pressed the big red buttons to use them. Also Legendary Kung Fu Masters! A lot of people dont know of this game- it doesnt help that the only mentions i've heard about it recently (as a compilation for PSX) refer to it by its JAPANESE name. Apparently videogame magazine editors think they are scholars by using Japanese names of VIDEO games (oh brother). Anyway- one time my cousin/brother Billy had beaten the last fighter in the game and was more then half way through it again (the game has you fight all of your foes again after beating the last one- but this time they are a lot faster and harder. It was a great novelty back then), when he stepped away and i tapped the buttons ignorantly before he could put in his initials! I got punched in the arm for it but thats more then understandable lol.
I had PacMan Jr. one time too, but no one was interested as Atari was on its last legs at that time and people were more interested in other things.

Sal Collaziano 1-09-01, 03:35 AM Well, I have a different one. Yes, I had Telstar and an Atari 2600. But nothing compared to my Commodore 64. Everything was so cool on that system. I was really big into games until I found out about modems. My gaming career came to an end at that point... But to me, the Commodore 64 had it all. Great graphics, computing capabilities, AND a modem! Awesome stuff!

ReagansRenegade 1-26-01, 07:27 PM Guys do you know about the Amiga!? This came out and was full color, had FMV powers, MULTITASKING, ect in like 19EIGHTY FOUR. This was when IBM and Apple where displaying either black and white or green ASCII graphics! IBM and Apple were so freaked out they bribed the guy in charge of Amiga (or at least it's important decision making) to ruin the company!
In Europe it still got a strong following- enough for it to get lots of great games (they still publish for it!) and they had these AMESOME commercials with real eighties girls http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00happy.gif gallivanting around- talking on the photo etc. And then I think some guy from the NSA (National Security Agency) shows up at one teenage Amiga owners house and invites him to save our nation with the help of his Amiga prowess!
The Amiga came with one of the first full color printers.
Needless to say the Amiga DESERVED to reign but of course the evil powers that be had them driven into the ground callously.
The thing was- Amiga was BASED on multitasking. The reason IBMs and Macs were so slow (and require so many upgrades and chips to prevent stalling on what an Amiga '91, if ever produced, would have had no trouble running) is because they were (and ARE) based on WORD PROCESSING- that is what they were originally designed for and IBM and Mac STILL base their newly released machines on this archaic concept! Well thats what one site told me http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I don't really know but I think the reason I detest PCs is because of it's archaic arcitechture (blah if I can pronouce it right do I need to spell it right?).
Anyways in a decent would we would all own Amigas or AmigaTVs (as oppossed to crappy crap WebTVs like I have) in this era and not this backwards Microsoft junk.
Just thought someone might investigate this as I did.
I have to say that while the NES is the system that got me to blow my and my poor abused mother's money on the Genesis, Sega CD, Turbographix 16 and all their crappy crap(™R.R.) games, the only system I still have today is the SNES.
There are still games I want to get for it- which I could pick up for like 5 bucks! HAH.
The lesson I'm learning is this- if I wouldn't buy it 10 years from now, I won't buy it today. Unless I want to wait and get it for 1/12th it's original sales price http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00grin.gif

"Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive."
Yup! I'm right there with Roemello. Zelda is one of my favorite series. I have played them all (even the Gameboy versions).
Hey, Sal. Was that a Telstar Arcade you owned? I had one of those. Took a silver triangular cartridge? They were pretty cool. Steering wheel on one side, gun on one side and paddles on the other. Also, you're right about the C64 being great for gaming. Omega Race was one of my favorites.
I personally though, think the Intellivision was the greatest gaming console of the 80's. Just MHO though. I loved the Dungeons and Dragons game for that system.

If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
GIJOE Man 73181 3-19-01, 04:01 AM I love my Commador 64 I still play with it today. Same with NES, Atari, and Saga Master. Long live the 80's
cultleader 3-20-01, 02:47 AM The utimate of all my years of game ownership(starting with my first PONG system)was NES and my favorite game.......Friday the 13th.I loved that game so much,I'd sit for hours and yell at the screen whenever Jason killed me..........Ahhh,what memories

If the world thinks your a Demon, you might as well Dance in the fire
Shakey!!!! I can't believe you said that!!!
I had Intellivision... (nobody ever knows what I mean when I say that because everyone else had Atari)
And I spent countless hours playing Dungeons and Dragons on it!!!!! And you could hear the rats, snakes, and dragons as you were getting ready to go around the corner to where they were..
You are too cool!

I was a D&D freak on Intellivision too Tina! I loved "Burgertime" also. These days...it's Playstation all the way, although XBox has my ears perking up!
Yep. I remember wasting away many hours playing A D&D on the old Intellivision. Moving my little stick figure through the labrynth and then firing my bow wildly when I came upon a critter. Man, those were Cool http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif days...
You may have been the only other person besides me though that owned one, Tinajo. Like you said, everyone else was Atari. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Atari 2600 (which I still have), Intellivision and the Commodore 64.
Atari games I love: Superman, Adventure, Activision Boxing, Maze Craze, Sky Diver, Video Pinball and Real Sports Football.
Intellivision games: Baseball, hands down.
Commodore 64: some chess-like game called Argon (I think) and this Olympics game.
Hey, TD. Yah! I loved Baseball on the Intellivision also. I got a kick out of the way they synthesized the speech. I can still hear them yelling in that tinny voice - "You're out!" That was good stuff.
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
Wow, I completely forgot about the "You're out." Didn't the voice also say "safe" whenever a runner reached a base safely? Ah, great memories.
Yep! Sure did. I think that was the first game I played that had talked.

If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
Yeah!!! I loved Intellivisions baseball, too!!!
"You're out!" that was great!!! "Space Armada" came with mine.. and I played the heck out of it!!

You know what system nobody's mentioning? Remember Colecovision? I got that when it first came out. Getting to play "Donkey Kong" at home was an amazing thing for me!!!
Yessir! I had one of those also. Donkey Kong and Zaxxon were my favorites for that system. I might have played Smurf also, but I'm not going to admit to it until someone else does... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//stareup.gif
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
You know.. I didn't know wnyone that had a colecovision... everyone I know had Atari2600... and I liked to go to my neighbors house and play "Pitfall"
I was always scared of the little scorpion that lurked at the bottom in the underground scenes... yikes!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//eek.gif

Yep. That little scorpion used to drive me crazy. I never could seem to get the timing right for jumping over them. Pitfall was one of the greatest games of the 80's, I think.

I remember Mario too...came with the system, so I kinda had no choice but to get into that one and like it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif That and Duck Hunt...I loved that game. Iluvthe80s 5-05-01, 12:34 AM The only video game system I ever had was a Sega Genesis. I still have it to this day.
Urethane 5-05-01, 12:55 AM We got a 2600 back in like 1980, I went to a small school so we were quite cool then. Then in 1983 we stepped up to the Atari 5200. After that we got a Sega Master System (contrary to popular belief the SMS was more powerful than the NES, just bad marketing and timing) I collect every console nowadays though, you name it I probably have it (yes even the coveted PS2) I wish Atari was still around, {sigh} definately have to say Atari was my fav.

80sSmurf 7-09-01, 01:49 PM It seems that most u guys r from the US (quote BloogSport:"OK USA!)...Ever heard of the ZX Spectrum or Amstrad ?! Those and the C64 were the big contenders in Scandinavia 'round the mid-80s (I'm not sure 'bout their status in the rest of Europe). They were all heavily featured in every CPU-mag. Nes and Atari were never that big around here back then.
When the Amiga came out in '87 it was the system of choice...Man the hype that li'l beauty spawned. A few people would get a NES or SNES but Atari ST and Archimedes were not in he scene, though I THINK Atari came out in UK, and I know the Arhcimedes did.
sarasunshine 7-09-01, 04:04 PM Atari 2600 is definitely my favorite. I still play it and still buy cartridges for it at flea markets and some local Gaming stores. Mario Bros., Donkey Kong and Centipede were a couple favorites. Dig Dug was pretty cool too I picked up another 2600 game system at a local consignment shop and it works perfectly. I plan on putting it up for sale on eBay.
Poison PJ 7-09-01, 04:08 PM I Love My NES & Genesis. I Had A Good Library Of Games For both. My faves NES Are Life Force, Mega Man, Contra, Bump N Jump, Clash At Demonhead, Final Fantasy & Zelda
And My faves For Genesis Are Sonic 3, Comix Zone, Alterd Beast, Ghouls & Ghosts, Double Dragon, F117 Night Storm & Crue Ball
wavemaster 7-10-01, 06:30 AM My first step into computerized games was in 1979, a cheap set with 4 games on it, all of them "Pong"-clones. The fascination for it has lasted about 4 weeks, then it became dull.
In the early 80s, my parents gifted me with the Atari 2600...okay, I´ve pested them constantly until they gave in...played Space Invaders until my eyes were square . Found out the secret trick to increase the firing rate of that turret by fiddling with the power switch...yeah, I was the man!
Didn´t had a large stock of cartridges, as they were quite expensive here (about 50 - 70$), but my faves were Pac Man and Defender.
I still own my old 2600 with 5 cartridges...sold the others which I deeply regret now.
Hibernated the whole computer stuff around the Sinclairs, Commodores and Ataris (another thing to regret deeply) as I´d rather spent my spare time whith tuning up my mopeds. Bought my first PC when "Doom" was released, a 486-DXII whith powerful 4 MB RAM... ...but it was more meant for my first steps into graphic designs (really! I swear! ).
Today, I prefer strategic games like Sudden Strike or C&C. Okay, I´m also owning the whole Mechwarrior episodes, and I would be a bad liar if I would say that I never enjoyed a good trashing at UT...but my fascination for the games of that decade never faded completely.
nolanbuc 7-10-01, 06:31 AM I loved Atari 2600! Anyone remember Yar's Revenge? Great game. We used to swap game cartridges at school. But NES is my my fave...Mario, Zelda, Punch Out...*sigh* Those were the days, eh?
Roemello 7-10-01, 04:15 PM I remember Yars Revenge! Not only do I remember it, I still have the cartridge Never got rid of my Atari 7800 (the 2600 got sold though way back...right after we got the 7800).
As 80's systems go though....my fave is also the NES To this day, I've never bought any other brand of gaming system besides Nintendo (although I have gotten everything else via emulation...gotta love free games )
