Console will be bundled with software at many retailers, raising price to $499 to $1,200.

Consumers expecting to pay the $299 suggested retail price for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox video game console may be in for some sticker shock.

Beginning next month, many retailers will be requiring customers to pay from $499 to as much as $1,200 to reserve an Xbox console that, like it or not, will come bundled with games, peripherals and warranties.

The reason: Microsoft will provide additional marketing money to merchants that agree to include the software giant's games in their bundles. That's because Microsoft's games carry higher profit margins for the Redmond, Wash., company than those published by third-party companies such as Activision Inc. and Electronic Arts Inc. The plan is angering consumers.

"Loyal Xbox fans will have to dole out hundreds of dollars more than they expected to secure an Xbox," said Geoff Keighley, editor of Gameslice, an online game site. "That's just not right. It feels like bait-and-switch."

Microsoft officials said they are simply responding to retailers' wishes.

"When we came up with the program, we wanted it to be what's best for retailers," Microsoft spokesman James Bernard said. "This is based on what retailers told us they wanted."

Not only is Microsoft encouraging retailers to sell the higher-priced Xbox packages, Microsoft also is specifying how much shelf space stores must dedicate to the new product. To ensure retailers' cooperation, Microsoft is tying allocations of Xbox units and extra marketing dollars to its requests, retailers confirmed.

The console is not due in stores until Nov. 8, but many merchants--including Amazon.com, K-B Toys, Electronics Boutique, Babbage's, GameStop, Software Etc. and FuncoLand--let consumers pre-order Xbox.

That practice backfired for Sony Corp. when it cut back the number of PlayStation 2 consoles available on launch day last year because of manufacturing problems. That left consumers who had pre-ordered a console empty-handed and angry. Sony, anticipating such problems, had discouraged pre-orders.

Microsoft's strategy, intended to maximize revenue from so-called early adopters eager to lay their hands on the new console, is risky, analysts said. If pre-orders don't catch on, consumers could view Xbox as a dud, dampening enthusiasm before the console debuts.

"They're overestimating demand," said P.J. NcNealy, senior analyst at Gartner Group Inc. in San Jose. "That could result in a near-fatal first step."

Sean McGowan, director of research for Gerard Klauer Mattison in New York, said it is surprising that a newcomer to the console business, even if it's Microsoft, would take such an aggressive stance. "This is above and beyond the other deals in the industry," he said.

The program also runs the risk of alienating hard-core gamers, whom Microsoft relies on to generate buzz about Xbox.

Glenn Young, an avid gamer in Cheviot Hills, said he dislikes the terms of the pre-order program.

"It's not cool if they try to dictate which games you get," Young said.

In contrast to Microsoft, Nintendo Corp. is not attaching incentives for retailers to bundle its upcoming GameCube console with software or accessories.

"I'm not sure what these programs get you, except a lot of marketing frenzy," said Perrin Kaplan, a Nintendo spokeswoman.

Well...I already had myself a hell of a laugh when PJ told me this in the chat, but what the hell...

ROFLMAOLMAOLOL :D :D :D :D

Ok, I'm done. Seriously though...that thing is dead on arrival. You'd have to be an absolute lunatic to buy a second rate system like X-Box for that much money :p

I'll stick to GameCube thank you very much.

Ok, first of all, how can there be any "loyal X-box fans" when they aren't available yet?
$1200? They can keep it.

Not only that, but I've seen screenshots of a couple games for it....the graphics look the same as that of your average PC game these days. Now tell me where the logic is in buying that cheesy thing for $1200 when you already have a PC that does the exact same thing already? Nevermind the fact that GameCube will be better and will only cost $200.

Hell, PS2's not all that expensive anymore either...I'll go with that above X-Box anyday :p

Now now...I have no problem with bundles. I have to buy an extra controller - I need games anyways. The bundle price for X-Box will be $499 incl extra controller,3 games of your choice and a mem. card. I understand why Microsoft wants to avoid the same thing that happened to Sony. You want the people, who wants to play the games to buy the machines, which they will - bundle or not. What you don't want is people to buy 15-20 un-bundled machines, so they can sell them for obscene prices on eBay. The bundles will keep people from doing that. Good for the gamers - bad for the morons, who thinks this will make them easy money.

I don't care what machines survive or which is better than the other. It's all about the games. If there are good games for X-Box, then I will buy an X-Box. The whole "that sucks and my machine is better" is pointless. It's all about the games. Halo and the new Oddworld on X-Box looks like good games. A few more good games and I will be an X-Box owner. :)

I understand your point, Flix, & it's a good one. The X-box won't catch on if they can't show you a game or 2 when you buy it. But $1200? That takes quite a bite outa Santa's funds, if you know what I mean. And especially if I can get get as good or better gaming experience on a pc game, my kids will have to wait for X-box. It just seems (IMHO) to be the typical "if we build it, they will come..no matter what the price" attitude of MicroSoft. (& I'm not yor typical Gates-hater, either!) :D Bundled or not, this console is not competitively priced. :( Just my 2 cents ( got change for a nickel, Roem?) lol

I doubt the price of the smallest bundles will be $1200. No bundles makes the machine more expensive than $299, which means a $1200 bundle would include extra accessories and like 15 games. I understand that bundles are pricy, because they force you to buy stuff that you would normally think of as optional. I think they will sell a lot of $499 bundles, cause that will include what people would buy even if it wasn't bundled.

GIA (Gaming Intelligence Agency) just came up with this regarding whether to choose a PS2, X-Box or GameCube:

Even at $500, I don't think they will sell. Not to many parents out there are going to fork over that kind of money for a gaming system. They need to hit the sweet spot ($300 or so) to make it in the market.

I also just saw where this system's release date got pushed back.

It looks like the only way to get a US Gamecube is through similar package deals. Cheapest I've seen is $400 at Babbages/Gamestop.com

It's made with PC component, and nothing that comes from PCs is crashproof. On the other hand, console, like expensive workstation are. It's no wonder N64 had a Mips processor, just like SGI !!!!!!!

I got my X-Box today. Couldn't help myself when I saw the "now in stock" sign. Picked up a few games, where Gotham Racing, Halo and Dead or Alive 3 has been awesome so far. I still haven't looked at Fusion Frenzy and Oddworld.

Halo will be the big hit for X-Box. I would definitily recommend that or Project Gotham Racing. :)

I might get one if they drop down to about $200. I'm happy for now with the GameCube.
