View Full Version : I don't know what I got, but I need The Cure!!
Would The Cure be part of this forum?? One of my all time favourite bands with lots of good songs. I like their Disintegration album and most of the new stuff as well. This is a band that never changed much with time. Am I the only fan around here??

Flixfan! Your taste in music is KICK ASS! The Cure are an alltime fave band of mine. The Cure are on tour. The Cure have a new album that I have not yet gotten http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif . I think The Cure could fit in alot of forums, actually. They never really conformed to any one "stereotype". I think that is why I like them so much!

Sal Collaziano 5-31-00, 12:49 AM I think they even have a few songs that I like. That's odd because I was a big metalhead and most metalheads didn't really care for them.. What were a few of their really mainstream songs that may have gotten alot of radio play or MTV play?

I found a CURE for my Duran Duran disappointment. The new Cure album "Bloodflowers" is soooooo good. They are definately a timeless band with the same catchy guitar riffs and interesting vocals. Sal, if I had to come up with a MTV video by The Cure that you would remember it would be the creepy Lullaby. "Spiderman is having me for dinner tonight". My favourite Cure single is Why can't I be you.

Sal Collaziano 6-01-00, 02:45 AM Geez, I don't remember either one.. I was never a fan, though. So that's my excuse. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif I will get their CDs one day..

I never really paid much attention to radio. I don't listen to it. But, the two that stick out in my mind by The Cure are Lovesong (Disintegration, 1989, Lullaby and Fascination Street were both on this album as well) and Friday I'm in love (Wish, 1992). Both were hits, I think...
I do agree about Bloodflowers. I have not gotten it yet, but I have heard it and I love it, along with everything else The Cure has done. They are timeless. Listen to Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me or Disintegration and they both still sound great!
Sal, if you were never a big Cure fan but are serious about getting some Cure CDs, then try one of the singles compilations. There are two that are good. "Staring at the Sea-the singles" came out in '86 (?). But I suggest "Galore", released in '97, this is more of a Greatest Hits CD.

I just got tickets for the Cure concert on the 17th this month. Yay!! And more Cure again in Roskilde, Denmark two weeks later. Duran Duran in August. What a summer!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
-Flixfan

Ummmmm... I hate to say it, but The Cure is the only concert I've *ever* fallen asleep during except for an REM opening band set. It was about an hour into the Staring at the Sea show. Zzzzzzzzzzz...
FWIW, our processional and recessional music at our wedding was The Cure.
Now, I didn't actually fall asleep at the Eurythmics concert. I walked out. And I must admit, I *did* pass out at Love and Rockets, but that was self-inflicted. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/redface.gif

Roemello 6-03-00, 02:51 AM The Cure kicked!! My personal fave from them has always been "Just Like Heaven" http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

The Cure at your wedding sounds cool. It definately beats our wedding with The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. Vivaldi never really got into the punk scene, although secret tapes reveals him and Sid Vicious doing some heavy drugs inside a "coffeeshop" in Amsterdam. Vivaldi started on his 5th season right after that meeting, but unfortunately passed away before he could finish it. Lucky for me since four seasons was about all I could take at my wedding.

mrmiata...too bad about love & rockets...they were GREAT live! sometimes we try to have TOO much fun, eh? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

I was all about Siouxsie and the Banshees (the original home of The Cure's Robert Smith). Echo and the Bunnymen, The Dead Milkmen, and Public Image Limited (with Johnny Rotten) also played a big part of my punk phase.
Anybody else do the spiky hair and dress in black thing? I've since destroyed all photographic evidence.
------------------
LOL Iggy I was definitely into spiky hair and black for a spell. i loved Echo and the Bunnymen, Dead Kennedy's (too Drunk to ****), Nina Hagen, Sex Pistols,Skinny Puppy, Hunters and Collectors, XTC some "mellower" stuff The Cure,Violent Femmes.......hmmm I know I have forgotten lots Oh how about "The Cramps"!!
LOL this brought back memories of creating "slam pits" at our local bar!!

Oh man, did I *hate* PIL. I remember going to pick up my girlfriend's sister from the show. The Dead Milkmen? Pretty cool. Siouxsie wasn't punk much after her Bromley Contingent, but I was a huge fan anyway. Got to see her on the Tinderbox tour.
I had the all-black thing going on into the '90s. Now I can't stand to wear a black shirt most of the time.
I was, and am, a HUGE Nina Hagen fan. I got to talk to her on the phone one time, as one of my friends in Houston was really good friends with her. Saw Skinny Puppy on tour once. Was never really into H&C, though XTC is still a favored band. The Cure? Well, you can read further up how I felt about them. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif The Cramps will always rock! The Femmes were fun, but they didn't do much for me except for a couple of songs.
Anybody else really get into the the real hardcore stuff back then? C'mon, admit it. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif
------------------
Over the weekend, I saw Siouxsie Sioux doing some fashion show in London. Sister is looking rough. She still has that sexy growl in her voice though.
------------------
Hunters and Collectors? Are we talking about the Australian band? I never considered them punk in any way. My fav song of theirs is "Throw Your Arms Around Me". It's their most popular song. What about The Jam?

You're right Sheree, Hunters and Collectors weren't Punk but they were a band I was into during my "Punk/Alternative" stage. I was trying to remember all the music i listened to at that time, they popped into my head http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

What was your favourite Hunters & Collectors song? "Throw Your Arms Around Me" is one the best ballads of all time, especially the re-released version around the early to mid 90s. The original didn't have that quality that the 90s version does. It's nice to know that they were listened to outside of OZ!

RetroMan 6-20-00, 11:48 PM Wow Iggy, Last year I found out that Siouxie
and I share the same birth date (May 27) I have been a huge fan for quite a while but I only just found out - you should have seen me freak out!
------------------
Wow...what a find this message board is!
I don't know what most of our friends out here in Vegas listened to in the 80's, but it sure wasn't what I was into! They look at my record collection with a blank stare...having never even heard of most of the bands. So to hear people discussing Echo, Hunters & Collectors, Siouxsie, the Jam, DK's, etc is great :-)

Mrmiata asked:
<<Anybody else really get into the the real hardcore stuff back then? C'mon, admit it.>>
I'll admit it! I did a punk/hardcore show on our college station for a quarter...lotta work (filling 3 hours with songs that typically clocked in at under 2 minutes), but a lotta fun too.

Hi Pavgus! Welcome to the board. Things have been a little slow in here as of late. But please, feel free to post and get things hopping again!

I did not know that. Hey, you learn something new every day....unless you're really stupid.
I have 2 pil albums, and in my opinion they sucked. I just think they are really boring compared to the Sex Pistols. John Lydon sounds like a little old lady when he isn't screeching at the top of his lungs.

ReagansRenegade 8-25-00, 11:00 PM Why arent we talking about Black Flagg in here? Hmmmm? Well i dont really anything about punk rock since their is a conspiracy not to sell it (i guess real rebellion is unpopular with our "Illuminati" controllers), but i wish someone who did would tell me where to find good punk rock sites! Especially 80s punk rock, that would be great. The Cure is okay but its so depressing. I like the mohawked, leather jacket wearing punk rockers with the switchblades, tattoos and -hoo hoo!- punk rock girls! I heard if you let them beat you up they will let you take them places. Or if you have a scar. Is this true?

I cannot believe all the talk on here of The Cure and no one even mentioned the quintessential Cure album, one that should come to mind whenever The Cure is mention, 'PORNOGRAPHY', from 1982! This album is THE one to own if you own any, it has great songs like, 'A Short Term Effect', 'A Strange Day', 'One Hundred Years', 'Cold', ah hell the whole damn thing is great, every single song. Pornography is what made me what I am today! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00grin.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//PSYCHO.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//GOOFY.gif

djdaffy1227 5-07-01, 01:58 PM Wether the Cure is Punk rock can be debated but the fact that they are awesome cannot be. One of the best!
cultleader 5-07-01, 06:38 PM Hardcore what?NYC Hardcore?I wasn't much of a hardcore fan but I definatly was(and am)still into oi!I never was a cure fan,I just couldn't get into them. The only song I ever liked was "Trust" only because I thought it would be a perfect song to play at my Funeral(I was a very morbid dude)And yes,the Cramps will always rock,as well as the Ramones, the Misfits,Exploited,Peter and the Test tube babies,Rev.Horton Heat,Dead Boys,Johnny Thunders,The New york Dolls, and so on,and so on,and so on.....

Iluvthe80s 5-07-01, 09:33 PM My favorite Cure album was always "The Head On the Door". I got to see them in '96 and it was a good show.
that80sgoth 3-21-02, 10:45 PM my favorite cure album of the week is currently disintegration...
:1offwall:
but the best thing about them is that if you dont think you can 'get into'/like a certain album at first, you most certainly will later..
I.E. for the longest time i didnt really listen to the "Faith" album that much... and then one day it hit me and i understood it and now i think its fantastic. :thumb:

this charming man 3-22-02, 04:23 AM I absolutely love The Cure, they were definitely a great band and Robert Smith was a big hero of mine. Al my Cure stuff is on Vinyl and I don't have a stylus for my record player  . Now that I've got a CD Writer, I'm hoping to record them onto CD's.
Although Robert Smith played for Siouxsie, he did originate from The Cure, they had a bit of a break and Siouxsie asked him to join them for a bit. He said he enjoyed it at the time but he likes to be in control and returned to work with The Cure.
They are so many good songs, it's hard to choose a favourite, today it is probably "A Forest" because I love the beat of the bass guitar in that song. But then there's 10:15 Saturday Night, Boys Don't Cry, Close to Me, Six Different Ways, Subway Song, the unpolitically correct Killing An Arab, Three Imaginary Boys and Lovecats (which was the song that got me hooked on The Cure) to name but a few.
I liked their album Concert which featured them Live and the cassette version had extra tracks of older stuff on the other side.
Robert Smith also had another band called The Glove and released an album called Blue Sunshine.

NO JOKE! lovecats is a 'wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully' addictive song! and its a shame that the glove didnt make another album.. i really liked it a lot and i thought it was quite ahead of its time.. :thumb:

Totally. (heh, now I sound like a true, authentic Cure fan, LOL!)
I started with Kiss Me, thanks to "Just Like Heaven."
I listened to them so much, almost every song has a memory connected to it, or reminds me strongly of a friend. Especially "In between days," it's rare that I can listen to that song and keep my composure.
I like their older albums more every year. I hardly ever listen to Wish anymore. (I don't own anything newer than Wish... it's ten years old... Jesus, doesn't that make me feel old!) Not that I don't like it, it just doesn't resonate in me the way it did when I was in high school. Pornography just keeps getting better.
Eh, I'm rambling. Most of my Cure stuff is on tape & vinyl; I need to prowl used CD stores and get "everyday" listening copies.
I got out my old videos a few months ago and watched "Picture Show." The snowball fight just killed me laughing... and "Hello I love you" played in the minivan, ha!
I love The Cure. I have been listening to their Greatest Hits a lot this weekend. So many good songs and that is just the singles.
Their videos are really good too. I want to get that DVD, Retroman. ;) :D
