View Full Version : Greatest Goth rock band ever? [Poll] DarkWave 11-04-01, 10:36 PM DarkWave 11-04-01, 10:40 PM I am a huge fan of this band, one of my favorite of all-time, only second to Depeche Mode. Love also all the others but...siouxsie have a special place in my heart! What's your choice? :) http://www.gothic.net/~vamp/Siouxsie/Images/b-wrobrt.jpg We found you hiding we found you lying Choking on the dirt and sand Your former glories and all the stories Dragged and washed with eager hands Iluvthe80s 11-04-01, 10:44 PM My sister has a poster of that picture, Dark Wave. This is tough. I could not narrow it down to one band. It is a toss up between The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, and Sisters Of Mercy. DarkWave 11-04-01, 11:10 PM Well...you will have to choose, just try to think...what is the goth rock band that you have loved the most for years and still do? Iluvthe80s 11-04-01, 11:52 PM I guess it would have to be Siouxsie and The Banshees. All their songs are great and they put on great shows. My prize possession of theirs is my fluorescent vinyl autographed copy of The Rapture. I saw them in concert back in 1995 and they appeared here at a local Tower Records signing autographs. DarkWave 11-04-01, 11:58 PM You saw Siouxsie live? for god's sake..you are one truly lucky guy! do remember the playlist? Iluvthe80s 11-05-01, 01:17 AM These are the ones I can remember them playing: Kiss Them For Me, Peepshow, Dazzle, Happy House, Israel, Dear Prudence, Last Beat Of My Heart, Oh Baby, Cities In Dust, Christine, Fireworks. There are a few more, but I can't recall them. Ted Nugent 11-05-01, 06:22 PM My favorite Goth band is Tristania. :) The Cure a close second. :) Poison PJ 11-05-01, 06:28 PM Type O Negative wavemaster 11-06-01, 03:37 AM *Sorry there was no black smilie available... :D* That was one of the toughest polls I ever took part in - even the next elections here are way easier... They are all great - I just canīt get warm with the recent stuff from The Cure, but I like to listen to their older songs. Iīm still puzzled about the answer Daffy gave me in the chat room during his Halloween special when I asked for Type O Negative... Bogie 11-06-01, 09:30 AM I had to choose Bauhaus. Sisters are my fave but for me, Bauhaus was the first and best of the lot. :D Flix 11-06-01, 11:52 AM The Cure or Sisters of Mercy. I went with The Cure, but only after spending some time listening to both bands. Good poll though! :) Mary 11-06-01, 05:23 PM How am I supposed to decide?! heh! I picked Siouxsie, but I could have easily said Sisters, Bauhaus, or Christian Death... I love the Cure but somehow they don't get filed under "Goth" in my head. (under "mope rock," more like) djdaffy1227 11-07-01, 04:04 PM I was doing a special on Halloween songs. I don't know of any by Type O negative. I thought they were Heavy Metal. I never placed them in a category with the rest of these bands. Maybe I don't know Type O Negative. Would Ministry fit in "goth"? I like them. How about Skinny Puppy? wavemaster 11-07-01, 04:25 PM Originally posted by djdaffy1227: I was doing a special on Halloween songs. I don't know of any by Type O negative. How about Skinny Puppy? Okay...as I said, I was a bit puzzled. Nothing much to worry about. ;) Type O Negative was the follower of Carnivore, a NYC hardcore band which became known for their controversial lyrics. Type O Negative kept this course on the first two albums before they decided to change, replacing their hardcore epitomes of hate with goth rock and lyrics now telling sinistrous stories about love and death. With the album 'Bloody Kisses' which features the club hits 'Christian Woman' and 'Black No.1' they were noticed by a wider audience, even outside the Metal community. Ministry started out as a funky Wavepop duo before they crossed the borders, becoming more and more Industrial, while Skinny Puppy did Electronic Body Music before crossing the same line. Sorry for this short crash course in music. And...I will send out your CDs tomorrow, promised. ;) djdaffy1227 11-07-01, 04:37 PM Originally posted by wavemeister: And...I will send out your CDs tomorrow, promised. ;) I hope so. As of December 1st I will be in a new apartment. Thanks for the short history lesson. I guess I have no clue what "goth" means. I just know I like all the bands listed. I have them all under "alternative" in my collection. Alternative in my collection is a general term. I have things sorted as such. Top 40 and Classic Rock, R&B (includes R&B, hip hop, funk, blues etc), Hard rock (heavy metal, hair bands etc), Rap, Alternative (grunge, and from what I understand "goth", punk, industrial, etc), Oldies (pre rock era, jazz, 50's, 60's, do-wop, British Invasion etc), Country (mainstream, Americana, Blue grass etc) and Compilations. xistenza 11-07-01, 09:48 PM This is a tough choice, but I had to go with Siouxsie because it's the one band that I absolutely LOVE everything by. BUT, I don't know if I really consider her music, "goth rock". I hate all these labels, really. Sisters of Mercy are the epitome of Goth Rock. When I think of Goth music, they are the first band band to pop in my mind. Bauhaus, are probably next in line. They sort of had a combination of goth and punk, with a bit of rock and glam. Really an excellent band. Sex Gang Childern were goth all the way, but pretty good at it, none the less. Christian Death are just lengendary! I can't count the number of times I'd sit in my room spinning my "Only Theatre of Pain" album again and again. I was WAY into that, but got really bored of them with all their other releases and forget about Valor. I never liked his vocals. It was either Rozz or nothing for me. The Cure, like Siouxsie, are just amazing. But I wouldn't really consider their music goth either, more like dark pop with a splash of goth. Sounds like a tonic? hehe. So....I guess it would be Sisters of Mercy as best Goth Rock band... ...and Siouxsie as Best of the bands listed. :) :) Talk about a long answer!!  xistenza 11-07-01, 09:54 PM Originally posted by Iluvthe80s: These are the ones I can remember them playing: Kiss Them For Me, Peepshow, Dazzle, Happy House, Israel, Dear Prudence, Last Beat Of My Heart, Oh Baby, Cities In Dust, Christine, Fireworks. When I saw her, she opened up with "Last Beat of My Heart" and went right into "Peek-a-boo" it was great. The last time I saw the Creatures, she did a bunch of old Banshees songs..."Night Shift" "Peek-a-boo" and "Red Light" :D Mirrorball Man 11-07-01, 10:22 PM This is intresting...original Goth and who would be the favorite. For me it would be either Bauhaus or Siouxsie..Both have great songs, lyrics and vocals. Peter Murphys voice is haunting..While Siouxsies is very dreamy. Though I dont not agree with one thing about this poll..The Cure is not Gothic ...Even Robert Smith has said himself that hes never understood why people have put the Cure into this category because the lyrics or musically they dont fit into the category, though have toured with Gothic groups in the past.I would agree with his statement. In any case , people like what they like. Old scholl Goth music of course beats the hell out of the new generation crap. Just my opinion.. MM ;) outofplacechild 11-07-01, 10:43 PM Siouxsie wins this one, if only because I think she looks good and sings good. Hey, Goth chicks look hot. Bonus: She often sang with no top on (YOWZA!). Sincerely, John "outofplacechild" Kilduff I'm 18, she's older...so what? She still looks good! Flix 11-23-01, 06:48 AM Another great goth band not mentioned: The Mission or Mission UK for the US fans. All their albums are brilliant - even the later ones. They never changed sound through three decades. Whether it comes from lack of skill or just sheer persistence is a different matter. They still rock! :) Vilji 11-23-01, 11:54 AM that is the easiest question I've ever answered. Without a doubt, it's Bauhaus all the way. all of their songs are so unique. And no one has a voice like that. also, the members formed other bands later that were f**ing great! Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, etc, and P. Murphy's solo material was incredible. ok, a close second is Sisters.. great driving music Iluvthe80s 11-23-01, 12:22 PM Originally posted by xistenza: I've seen The Creatures 4 times. I have always wanted to see Siouxsie with The Creatures also. They had came here at least twice I can think of and I missed both shows. Vilji 11-23-01, 05:22 PM hey Dj, yes, I'd say Ministry could be heard as goth. I don't know much about their 90's stuff, but I love their 80's music. "life is just one transition. life is just one decision.." they're way up there on my list :) Therrall 11-25-01, 06:35 PM hhhmmm, I'll have to go OTHER because my favorite band Tristania was not included. wingback 8-10-04, 05:56 PM For true darkness and the oppitomy goth 4 me has to three bands. 1 Alien sex fiend menicing lyrics over fast drums 2 Sex gang children Andi sexgang's vocals (especialy Dieche) 3 The virgin prunes Drama Drama Drama :thumb: whistledog 9-13-04, 07:53 PM I had to go with The Damned 'Eloise' and 'Grimly Fiendish' are still some of my favourites of the 80's :thumb: DJJEFFCLARKE 10-01-04, 12:17 AM I dont know about "greatest goth band ever",but Im really a fan of Bauhaus and peter murphy.
