View Full Version : Best Visage Single
Visage were THE New Romantic supergroup fronted by Steve Strange, they were for me the finest pure New Romantic group of the lot.
They released two great albums (Visage & The Anvil) and a fairly patchy third album (Beat Boy) after Midge Ure had left, it still contained a few great tracks like 'Love Glove'.

My fave is 'Mind Of A Toy', great song, great video, which was directed by Godley & Creme. :thumb:
whistledog 2-02-05, 01:32 PM Although Fade to Grey was pretty much their only success here.. I actually prefer Damned Don't Cry. Very nice song :yesnod:
This has to be the most straightforward poll ever for me - Fade To Grey remains one of the best songs of the 1980's...a timeless classic.
Altogether now (with hands gliding slowly across your faces)
'Ahhhhhhh.....We Fade To Grey' :thumb:
Night Train rings a bell so just to be different I'll go for that, although Fade To Grey shot by the winning post ages ago :yesnod:
Roemello 2-03-05, 12:39 AM Definitely gotta go with 'Fade to Grey'
Hurrah Brother 2-03-05, 01:29 AM i am torn between the brilliant and defining 'Fade to Grey', and the not so well known and beguiling "damned don't cry"
Night Train was a massive hit in the UK, but i didn't like it that much.
"Fade To Grey" is actually the only one I know (I think). So that got my vote - and I agree it's a classic :thumb:
Fade to Grey, is their best song I think. The video was also awesome.

Prefab Sprouter 2-03-05, 07:18 AM Well call me cliched but I went with Fade to Grey. Any idea what Steve Strange is up to these days?

Check out his autobiography Preef 'Blitzed - The autobiography of Steve Strange', it's a really great read and a must for any true 80's fanatic.
I understand that he's still active on the PR and management side of certain bands, as well as still playing an active part of the 'Hear and Now' 80's music tours.

I had read in this month's "Uncut" magazine that he had fallen on hard times somewhat but thanks for clearing that up! Good to see he's still around!!!
While Fade to Grey is one of the best dance tracks ever.....My vote goes to Damned Don't Cry. Love that song.
DJ Midas 2-04-05, 09:53 PM "Damned Don't Cry" is my favorite Visage tune. :)
Fade to Grey was my favorite...ok it was the only one i recognized.
Glenn Gulia 2-05-05, 08:15 PM Fade To Grey
Brand1974 2-05-05, 08:15 PM Gotta go with Fade to Grey as my favorite song. I am not familiar with a lot of their other songs. I should give the others on that list a listen sometime.
I had to go with Grey too, I've only heard a few others by Visage. I only searched them out because I was a Midge Ure fan. Visage didn't make it here in the States, so I couldn't ever hear much.
I know, a lot of the good British bands you don't hear much in the U.S. :(
that's my fav music, mostly.
fade to grey is definitely the best I've heard from them.
Poindexter 5-03-05, 11:21 PM played to death, but I'll still go with Fade To Grey :thumb:
Monty007® 8-01-05, 06:29 AM Fade To Grey gets my vote :yesnod:
BlitzKid 8-10-05, 12:03 PM I always liked Mind of a Toy and Visage best. Very good New Romantic stuff, the Brits simply can't be beat in that area of music!

I saw him in a TV documentary last year - featuring Duran Duran, Marc Almond and Strange - where he spoke about the club scene and his dope addiction. He appeared to be relatively well kept, although he - according to himself - had spent about a million £ on drugs (Marc Almond estimated his drug expenses to only the half). At the time of Visage's (crappy) last album, he refused to come for an interview or a gig unless there was a dealer at his hotel.
Fade To Grey is Visage at their best. Many other Visage songs are great, or they have good parts, but Fade To Grey is the most complete pop song of theirs.
It was interesting to learn that Strange designed the costumes in David Bowie's video "Ashes To Ashes" (another great song). It was released before Visage hit the charts, and when they did, many people thought that they imitated Bowie's latest style - whilst it really was the other way round.
At the time of Visage's (crappy) last album, he refused to come for an interview or a gig unless there was a dealer at his hotel.
Whilst admitting Visage's last album was a flawed piece of work, to say it was crap is a bit strong. 'Love Glove' was a great song as was 'She's A Machine' that featured on the 12" A few other songs had great parts to them put the overuse (and mis-judgement) of heavy metal guitars ruined the chorus. Now if you want crap, look at Strange Cruise's output!
ElectricYouth 5-08-06, 12:20 AM Although I love all of Visage's stuff, Fade To Grey would definitely have to be my fave.
"Fade to Grey" has been/is one of my favourite 80s song since been released till now. I like other Visage songs, but I have no doubts about my favourite one.
My favorite has always been "mind of a toy" . What i liked so much about visage is that they went in a more european sounding direction then most of their british new romantic contemporaries.
Bananana 7-01-06, 06:32 AM In the Year 2525 is a great song!
willowbythesea 7-01-06, 08:18 PM Although I really love fade to grey, I went with Damned don't cry. There'sjust so much in that song. Good memories there. And great post btw. :thumb:
