View Full Version : Alice: ANY FANS?
ahafan02 12-18-04, 11:36 PM I have to admit my all time favorite sitcom has to be, hands down, ALICE. Flo was always my favorite character (it's a shame she quit in 1980 to star in the short lived Flo spin off). It's a shame that it's not in syndication anymore. It truly is one of the best sitcoms. (For those who don't know it ran from 1976-1985..for nine seasons, which is longer than a lot of sitcoms).
The last season, like a lot of great shows (i.e. Rosanne, for example), was tragic. A lot of episodes were mainly repeats of previous show themes. It's like they ran out of ideas and the I hated the way it ended.
Anyone else love this show?
80sTrivia 12-19-04, 09:05 AM Alice was a great show! Wonderful ensemble cast, including the late Vic Tayback as crusty ol' Mel. Linda Lavin was great as Alice; Broadway actresses are always the best! (Patti Lupone, Bea Arthur...) I loved Flo, of course, Polly Holiday was brilliant. And sweet, innocent Vera! I especially loved the opening them song, sung by the multi-talented Linda Lavin... Early to bed, early to rise, in between I cooked and cleaned and went out of my head...
whistledog 12-19-04, 11:34 AM I was a big watcher of Alice. When Flo left for the spin-off and various cast members came and went.. it started to get a little confusing, but I was still a loyal fan.
Alice ran for 9 years. Many successful shows don't even make it there. I liked Vera. She was so clueless
Rhelawen 12-19-04, 01:40 PM I really enjoyed this show. Flo was hilarious! "Kiss my grits!"

That had to be among the earliest TV catch phrases I can remember! So.... they call asses "grits" in Arizona 70's/80's slang? I guess you do learn something new everyday:thumb: I also really liked the theme song, especially the bom, bom, bom, bom, booooooom at the song's end!
BTW, not to get offtrack here, but I'm curious. What was the name of Tommy's girlfriend. Unless they're sisters or lookalikes, I though I remember seeing her on Little House on the Prairie (as ALBERT'S girlfriend) and as the sister of a boy pharoah in some movie about a kid who plays football (with gold helmet and green-white(?) uniform), who uses this pyramid of sticks that he sat cross-legged in (like a tent with no canvas, just the frame) to go back in time to ancient Eygpt. There, he meets a kid pharoah and his sister(?), the girl I'm talking about.
They go on this adventure (maybe because they're running from someone), wind up in the desert, eat peaches from a can (which, being ancient Egypt, impress the Egyptians), and ride a horse bare-back (the girl made a comment about people not riding this way, as opposed to in chariots). The protagonist even goes "back to the future", and brings his bloodhound for some reason. Oh and, he and the girl both get close in Egypt (she cried when he had to come home) and she shacks up with him in the "future" as a girl who happens to LOOK like the princess! I tell you, that girl has a RICH TV lovelife!
Finally, he used a pyramid shaped gem to activate the power....or something.
Getting back to the point, does anyone know who she is, the name of this movie, and if she was Tommy's GF for one episode or a recurring character? Thank you!

Her name was Olivia Barash and that movie you're talking about was from 1981 and called "Through the Magic Pyramid". She was only in one episode of Alice called "Tommy's First Love" in 1979. In another episode the same girlfriend is played by a different actress.

snoops71 1-15-05, 04:55 AM Sure, I always liked "Alice." I remember it coming on Sunday nights, between "The Jeffersons" and "Trapper John MD." Flo was hysterical!
Actually, it came on before "The Jeffersons" and after "One Day at a Time" Oops!
I was a huge fan of this show. Vic Tayback was a funny, funny man!
LOSTNTHE80S 1-15-05, 07:21 PM I watched it....I had a crush on Tommy  (Was that his name..his sister was Nancy Mckeon I think )
Vera was sort of strange but it was nice when they started involving her in the episodes where she was falling in love and got married.
I liked FLO!
Princess 1-15-05, 07:27 PM Good show, I watched :thumb:
