Although there have been some well known Aussie new wave bands - INXS, Midnight Oil etc - there are many more, and far better, bands from down under who deserve recognition.
One of the best bands (my fav Aus band) to emerge from Australia were The Triffids. From Perth, and lead by David MacComb, their most well known album is probably Born Sandy Devotional (in my all time top 10), although they are probably best known in the UK for their single "Bury me deep in love" which featured on the Aussie soap opera "Neighbours". Also recommended - "Calenture" and the "live in a sheep shed" album "In the Pines" - the compilation "Australian Melodrama" is a good place to start off.
Another superb band who had an excellent run of albums in the 80s were The Go-Betweens - I would recommend the "Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express", "Metal and Shells" or "Tallulah" cds as a good way to get into them.
Ed Kuepper - what a guy. All of his stuff - from his early work with The Saints (late 70s), through his solo output and his stuff with the Laughing Clowns is well worth investigating - my own personal favourites are "Im Stranded" by The Saints, and his solo albums "Electrical Storm", "Honey Steel's Gold" - a good introduction is "The Butterfly Net" compilation (solo work)
Other Aussie bands worth checking out are -
Radio Birdman
Lime Spiders
