Alright, in the whistledog style, I thought I'd do a Metal version of the "do you remember" type threads.

STEELER -

Steeler

Lineup:

Ron Keel - vocals

Yngwie Malmsteen - guitars

Rik Fox - bass

Mark Edwards - drums

While it's no secret that I'm not the biggest Malmsteen fan, this album was a great start for the, at the time, very young and hungry guitarist. Also, apparently Ron Keel has ditched Metal/Rock and last I heard was pursuing a Country/Western career in Nashville under the name of Ronnie Lee Keel.

Don't know what became of Rik Fox.

I think I actually owned that album at one point...Laughs...But in typical Yngwie fashion, it was more or less a leadfest with some bass, drums, and vocals thrown in for good measure, pretty much like all of his solo stuff that followed...One thing about him that I never could quite stomach, was that he always played everything he knew in each solo...There seemed to be no variance...That in no way means that he isnt incredible, because he is...That stuff, however, just wasnt/isnt my cup of tea...I'm more of a Tipton/Trower fan...

So True Bro. I agree the guy is talented but I like listening to guys who can do more than play light speed all the time (boring). And when I'm in the mood for that I prefer Paul Gilbert over Yngwie. But I do think there was some shining spots on the LP. After he went solo, he wrote almost everything on his albums and you can tell. They sound too one dimensional and don't have "the groove". He's a great lead composer, but not much of a rhythm man. I prefer Steve Stevens or Randy Rhoads myself for a variety of speed, taste, and styles. Tipton and Trower are also great players. :thumb:

I actually DO own that album STILL. It's pretty good for what it is....I admit Yngwie was kinda like "hey look at me - look how I can play!" But if you think about it, that is what made him so popular. Not necessarily the attitude, but the attitude in his playing. There are others that play great as well (not doing a list here) but few have that attitude - what I like to consider passion - in their playing. Now, if he was only so passionate about his songwriting....

In all fairness, he has written some great songs, and the man IS an incredible guitarist, and you're right...He does play with passion, and you gotta love a guy that uses a wall of Marshall's with all of his 50watt tops on 10...Ya hear that Manowar...

Gee, what Manowar song could you possibly be referring to???....and why didn't that song make it onto the VH1 awsomely bad 40 song list...oh wait - maybe because they wern't on a major label at the time..... :violin:

Still, it was classic Manowar and they were what they were...Kudos to them for getting Orson Wells to narate on 'Ride Like The Wind' though...I thought that was a cool touch...
