NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) -- Even Oscar the Grouch will be happy about this news: "Sesame Street" turns 35 years old today.

On November 10, 1969, the long-running children's TV series made its debut with many of the same Muppet characters who are on the show today. However, there were some slight differences: Oscar was orange and Big Bird didn't have any feathers on his head.

The giant bird also had a backwoods accent that sounded like Gomer Pyle, which was later changed to sound like a 6-year-old child.

These days, more than 17 versions of the series are produced outside the U.S., each with local adaptations. For instance, the Turkish Sesame Street takes place in a bazaar and Bert and Ernie are called "Budu" and "Ed."

In Norway, Big Bird is a blue monster while his Kuwaiti equivalent is a camel named "Noman."

But while "Sesame Street "is still popular with its target audience, not everyone is a fan. U.S. officials have claimed the show's theme song is especially effective at making Iraqi prisoners break down and cough up secret information during interrogations.

Happy Birthday !

I heard today that when Big Bird first came on the show it didn't have any feathers on it's (since we dont' know if it is a girl bird or boy bird  ) head, and Oscar the Grouch was actually orange when he came on the show.

I always knew Big Bird as having the Gomer Pyle type voice. They didn't really change it to a 6 year old did they? When did they do that? After Jim Henson died?

This is never on New Zealand TV any more, which is sad, because I would have loved to have my kids watching the show I used to watch when I was there age.

I remember the episode in '82 when Mr. Hooper had died, and they taught how to deal with the loss of a loved one

I love Sesame Street so much... when I was a wee one my world revolved around that show (and the Electric Company and Mr. Rogers, of course!)
My kids were raised watchin' it and even now that they are in their teens, WE STILL WATCH IT!

I actually didn't like Sesame Street when I was a kid. I had problems and asked my parents so many questions as to why particular characters that should have been smaller, were bigger than the characters that should have been bigger than them. For example: Mr. Sluffalupagus (or however you spell his name) was smaller than Big Bird. I thought that was so silly and thus, I didn't ever watch the show.

However, my son Brayden seems to be curious about that show, mind you, he's only 9 1/2 months old, but he does watch and seems to prefer Grover and Cookie Monster. Although, he is more of a Disney kid. He loves more of the Disney shows, such as Bear in the Big Blue House, Stanley & His Pet Fish, Wiggles, Rollie Pollie Olies, etc.....

A character that I like from Sesame Street is Slimey the worm (Oscar the Grouches pet). Smiles.

Happy Birthday Sesame Street!!!! You must be doing somthing right, or you wouldn't still be airing. :thumb:

Sesame Street was my fav show as a kid, I remember when Mr Hooper died :( Big Bird was so sad, and I cried, I think I was about 4 or 5. The Tweedlebugs and Slimey were always my fav characters but my fav sketch was always the one with Bert and Ernie in the temple and the statue of Bert comes to life  I actually have that one on video somewhere around the house.
