Elton John unimpressed by Madonna
LONDON (AP) — It seems Elton John is not a Madonna fan.
Taking the stage at a music awards show Monday, John accused the queen of pop of lip-synching and said he was astonished she had been nominated for best live act.
"Since when has lip-synching been live?" John said. "Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds (US$134) to see them should be shot.
"That's me off her ... Christmas card list," he added. "But do I give a toss? No."
Madonna's spokesman Liz Rosenberg refuted John's allegations.
"Madonna does not lip-synch nor does she spend her time trashing other artists," Rosenberg said in a statement. "She sang every note of her Re-Invention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work."
John, 57, was receiving a songwriting award at the Q awards, sponsored by a British music magazine.
Madonna, whose Re-Invention world tour stopped in Britain in August, did not win the best live act award. It went to British band Muse.
John has never been afraid to speak his mind. Last month he made headlines in Taiwan by telling photographers they were a bunch of "rude, vile pigs."
Rosenberg indicated Madonna was not taking John's remarks too seriously.
"Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice ... or naughty," she said.
80sTrivia 10-05-04, 06:08 AM That's Sir Elton for you... never one to mince his words!!!
blackdragon 10-05-04, 06:36 AM Hey, at least he's honest.
Not only is he honest, he's 100% correct....
PunkyPower 10-05-04, 11:04 AM Not only is he honest, he's 100% correct....
I second that. Madonna grates my nerves lately anyway.
KimJoy69 10-05-04, 11:06 AM http://deephousepage.com/smilies/rofl5.gifGOOOOOOOOOOO ELTON!! :D :yesnod:
TeachX3 10-05-04, 12:15 PM
There is NOTHING like the truth!
whistledog 10-05-04, 01:05 PM Madonna always lip synchs. You can tell because the songs she sing fade out at the end, and her voice fades with the song, yet her lips stop moving just a bit before it fades out
Maybe she's a ventriloquist
stlkev70 10-05-04, 01:30 PM Obviously Sir Elton knows that she's lip syncing, he's been in this business to know whats what! Kudos to Sir Elton he tells it like it is!
I find his comments rather sad.
One would have thought that at his age 'Sir' Elton should show a bit more traditional British decorum, and start to act more like an ambassador for the country - instead of being the loud-mouthed petulant spoilt little-teenager he seems to be coming across as these days. :irked:

No doubts he can act that way, but in this particular case, I say good on him. It's about time someone had the guts to tell it like it is.

I agree Recks, but I personally would have given this outburst more credibility coming from another source, rather than one that also seems to act like a spoilt little twerp in public 99% of the time.
The reality of the matter is that the similarities between Elton and Madonna are quite striking.
- They have have both let themselves down since the height of their fame, but whereas one is now a lipsyncher, the other is seemingly hell bent on recording sickly commercial-television guff.
If Elton wants to talk the talk, he's got to walk the walk - bottom line.

   Well said Bro. I do agree with what he said about Madonna but he is fast becoming a whinger
Guys....Elton's whining and griping is new to you? Being a HUGE Elton John fan since his first album, I can tell you he's been like that since DAY ONE. He's not "becoming" anything! He's always been a bitch, right from the start!
Remember when he said that Keith Richards looked like "an arthritic monkey" onstage? Ambassador or not, what he said is DEAD on. How can you possibly be awarded for your live show when your show ISN'T live? Lip-synching dilutes music. I wouldn't pay a dime to go see someone lip-synch, let alone the ridiculous prices that Madonna charges for her "live" shows.
However, I saw Elton and Billy Joel together last year, and the man STILL kicks major ass live!
I'll take a whining, bitchy, big-mouthed prima donna who still delivers the goods live over a slutty, lip-synching, religion-switching every 5 months, jump from one trend to the other has-been ANY day. ;)
Martika_Fan 10-06-04, 11:40 AM I think Elton John, like so many other artists these days is being so immature and petty and egotistical. There's nothing remarkable or original about his open criticisms of fellow artists-, recently Eminem, Kelly Osbourne, Rod Stewart even have done the same. Its a disgustingly fashionable trend nowadays. I doubt he's truly speaking his mind at all, I think he's just vying for publicity and trying to be down with the current scene, which incidentally is a current scene that makes me want to puke in so many ways.

Well said Chasey, Ginluca Vialli? Cheers Elton! Sort yourself out! Do a live gig at Watford FC's ground and give us the proceeds. Get back in touch with the common man , oh you are, sorry.
Glenn Gulia 10-06-04, 09:40 PM Elton why don't you trash the Q awards their the ones that nominated Madonna. I guess the toupee has leeched into his brain
AngelicR 10-07-04, 02:39 AM Madonna is cool whether she lips syncs or sings. She does a lot of dancing on stage, so if she does in fact lip sync at times, it is understandable. I think Elton was a bit rude..........Perhaps because he sits on his bootie most of the time when he performs, he doesn't realize that a person can get out of breath if they are dancing when they are singing.....HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :dammit:
The reason people lip-synch is because they cannot do it live. Ever wonder how most rock bands actually play live on television, while most of the "pop" stars choose to lip-synch? That's because they know they won't sound anywhere CLOSE to their record if they were to perform live, so they choose the easy (cowardly) way out.
It's not understandable to me to lip-synch just because you have to dance. If that's the case then I guess we should all welcome Milli Vanilli back with open arms. Hey, they had to dance, didn't they? ;)
Watch a live perfromance by Iron Maiden, and watch how much Bruce Dickinson moves around the stage. No lip-synching there....and they're all WAY out of breath by the time the show is over.
I guess I'm biased by the fact that I perform myself. I feel that if you give your audience a canned performance, you're ripping them off.
If you're gonna dance, then be a dancer. If your bread and butter is your songs, then sing them.
Elton may sit on his bootie now, but back in the day you'd be hard pressed to find someone with more energy during a live show.

Let me tell ya, Rachelle, that I have seen Prince live and as well as dancing better than Madonna, he manages to save some of his breath to sing too. :D
I wouldnt diss Madonna too much, anyone that can stay around for 20 years or so didnt get where they are just by lip synching. Her music aint bad either.
As for Uncle Elt............ great performer!

As i've said i'm not a metal fan at all, but i must agree i've never seen many metal bands lip synch and they do know how to put on a proper show! They put all their heart into the performance and i'd rather HEAR proper music than WATCH a dance routine with lip synch to a backing track.
Oh and i'd love to see you get Milli Vanilli back together again, would be bloody difficult! :thumb:
Senator Jaiz 10-07-04, 09:33 AM Oh and i'd love to see you get Milli Vanilli back together again, would be bloody difficult! :thumb:
Not really that dificult, just get Rob up there and a computer generated Fab. It was all fake anyway, you don't actually need a person up there. The other, and better option would be to try and re-animate the corpse through puppetry :mwaha: I take it back, that would be an interesting show, lip sync or not :thumb:
AngelicR 10-07-04, 11:07 AM Madonna doesn't lip sync full songs, only parts of songs, so I really don't mind that. I've seen concerts and she does get too out of breath to sound nice singing certain higher notes. In fact, she doesn't sound good at all, so I totally understand why she would prefer to lip sync during certain moments and now that her music is more electronic based, than her old stuff, that is another reason. These days most groups have a lot of electronica that flavor a majority of the songs. I know that some people don't like that, but others do. I think Madonna is great. You could put her on stage and if she got out of tune (which does happen) I wouldn't mind at all, but that is because I've been a fan of hers since I was 12.
Elton has some good music. I liked the song he did for the Lion King. However, I don't think he is a very nice person. Lately all I see on the news is him being rude. When sarcasm becomes thoughtless and cruel, it is no longer funny and although he may think he is doing himself justice by getting so much media attention, in the long run it is going to catch up him, because nobody looks up to jerks......and if you don't have fans left.....Bye Bye See Ya Later.....
Elton has some good music. I liked the song he did for the Lion King.
Well Rachelle, right there is where we have to agree to disagree. SOME good music?
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" might be one of the greatest albums of ALL TIME. ANYTHING he did in the 70's was pure gold.
Maybe most of the groups YOU listen to have electronica. But here in the world of good old rock & roll, bass, drums, guitar and keyboards are kind of the standard. ;)
By saying you're a big Madonna fan I can see why you're so upset with Elton, and that's your perrogative, so we can leave it at that. :)

Empty Sky, Elton John, 11/17/70, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau, Dont Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, Caribou, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, and Rock of the Westies ALL F*ckin KILL! Absolute Magic! I'm with you Bro...I'm a huge fan since 69! Paisano'
Damn bro...."Caribou"....what a f*cking album! :thumb:
Hemicidal 10-07-04, 01:14 PM That studio, for which the album was named, is 'The Sh*t"...No one, and I mean no one, has ever captured the magic on vinyl like EJ! Extrordinary!
AngelicR 10-07-04, 02:34 PM I was born Sep. 27th, 1973 and I'm afraid my parents didn't ever play Elton at home, so I didn't even know he existed until I was in high school and heard one of his songs that was in the charts and I can't tell you what that song was, because I can't remember. I thought he was a funny dresser and I think the only songs that ever really got my attention was the one he wrote for Marilyn Monroe and the Lion King ones. So needless to say, I don't know any of those albums you guys speak of. So sorry.....
Still, Madonna is tops!!!! Giggles..... ;)
Whoaaah boy, whoaaaaah boy....now justa hold on there a minute son!!
<Foghorn Leghorn mode=OFF>
My beef was never regarding the quality of Elton's music, and I don't think this is a Madonna vs Elton debate. It was purely regarding the fact that Elton seems to be turning into a total mouthy prat these days, and as Rachelle says it's really beginning to tire some (but not all) of us.
Right, I'm off to play 'Song For Guy' and chill out! Sir Elton may have questionable character, but most of his music is without question ;)
galaga-girl 10-08-04, 07:45 PM I did like Madonna's come back though! About not dissing other Artist's. I've always been a Madonna fan and NEVER an Elton one - guess i'm biased
