View Full Version : Is this okay?
PunkyPower 9-10-04, 12:52 PM Okay, this is silly, but in the name of making new posts, here goes:
My aunt (Aunt #1) and uncle adopted a new kitten recently and the name that she came with is Panama Millie (don't ask why it's Panama Millie because we don't know, but I think it's kind of cute). My grandmother's name was Millie (she passed away several years ago), so they debated on whether to keep the name. They couldn't find another name they liked, so they left it as is. My other aunt (Aunt #2) heard what the kitty's name is and declared that it is disrespectful to my grandmother's memory to share her name with a cat. The rest of us think it's kind of cute, and we think Grandma would have gotten a kick out of a kitty being named for her. She loved cats and was a great lady, so I don't think it would have bothered her at all. The kitty is going by Pan, but her full name remains Panama Millie.
So, my question is, do you think it's okay to have a pet share the same name as a friend or family member? Have you ever named a pet for somebody?
Sure it is fine, no harm in honoring someone by naming a pet after them. It's not like they named the kitten after a female dog. ;)
Princess 9-10-04, 01:02 PM We have a fish we named Dale after Dale Earnhardt Sr but that was before Dale pased away so I guess that doesn't really count. In my family the Italian tradition is to name a newborn after a family member that has passed. I was named after my Grandfather and cousin both named Michele. So why would an animal who many people considered their pets part as the family be any different. I honestly think if that is what your aunt wants to name her cat than go for it. People have something to say about everything so your aunt has to do what she is comfortable with :)

I think it's fine too, but Aunt #2 is really pissed off. Aunt #1 wonders if Aunt #2 really just wants the kitty named after her.
No offense PP, but Aunt #2 really needs to take her meds....
SouthernImage 9-10-04, 01:10 PM I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I had a fish named John  :shh:

Believe me, there's a LOT more to Aunt #2 than just the cat thing.
There's nothing wrong with it. Hell, my mom named her PT Cruiser after her mom and no one cared.
Hipechik70 9-10-04, 01:16 PM I would do it. If I was close to the person, why not. Some people don't understand it, but who cares, it's your animial. Not disrespectful at all. I had a freind that named their dog (yeah female) EBBIE...Me being "EVIE"...I went to their house, not knowing they had a dog heard Ebbie Ebbie..I finally go my name is E-Vie..They turn and say oh we were calling the dog! hahaha..............yeaaaah. I asked my friend were you upset w/me when the day ya'all named the dog? LMAO!!
Yet not my name but dang near close to it, I just let it roll, and played w/Ebbie she was cute though.
80sTrivia 9-10-04, 01:22 PM I don't see how it is disrespectful to name a pet after a cherished loved one, but I suppose people see things differently. I would just tell Aunt #2 to call the kitten Panama if she happens to see it! :)
keriberri 9-10-04, 01:28 PM I don't see anything wrong with it at all. Some people just have too much time on thier hands and not enough to grumble about! I hate coming up with names for cats, they did a fine job! :rollin:
Rhelawen 9-10-04, 07:08 PM I don't see anything wrong with naming a pet after a loved one. :)
BrandyBlue 9-10-04, 07:12 PM If the animal is loved and treasured like her namesake, then there is nothing wrong with it. I don't understand why people think that it's somehow crazy to love and respect an animal like you would a human--they are life, they breathe, they have feelings and they have as much of a right to a good life as anyone else. I think it's fine and that somebody has just got to get over it!
Nothing wrong with it. All I ever heard was it is bad luck to name a pet after a dead pet. Iu have never named a pet after a person. I don't like any person that much.:p

Hahaha...me either!
bookmistres4ever 9-10-04, 10:46 PM If it bothers Aunt #2 that much, have Aunt #1 call the kitty something else only when Aunt #2 is around, it's not like cats come when they are called anyways.
When I was little called my lizards Hannibal (after the A-team character) and Ickabod (after the Sleepy Hollow character and also because they were kinda icky)
RetroMan 9-11-04, 12:20 AM I think that's a great way for her memory to live on, I don't think it's disrespectful at all - there are hundreds of ways to pay tribute to someone.
I remember a girl in High School who's horse died after a bad fall on a beach run, she was so upset :( (as you would be)
In Art class we had work set to design a new prototype car and I named my project 'Fearless' (the horse's name) I kept in under wraps until I unveiled it for assessment for the class and she thought it was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done, so there you go - there are many ways to show that you care and naming a cat is great.
Aunt #2 should just loosen up a bit :thumb:
