View Full Version : Windows XP Service Pack 2 released.
Normally, I would have posted something like this in the computer issues forum, but I wanted to be sure that this got the exposure that it should.
Microsoft has released the second service pack for Windows XP (Home and Professional). The Network Installation can be found here - Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en). Keep in mind that this is the FULL installation, so the file size is much larger (approximately 266 MB's).
It addresses a multitude of security issues within XP and also adds some enhancement realeases, such as an integrated Pop-up Blocker, Internet Explorer download monitoring (to monitor against potentially harmful downloads), Windows Security Center to manage your system's security, an update to the integrated firewall and much more.
Anyway, just thought I would let everyone know.
SouthernImage 8-09-04, 05:15 PM Thanks, cause I'm having MAJOR probs with my work XP right now and I'm going crazy trying to figure out whats wrong.
(Don't yahoo me though Sonny, cause I took it off at work ;) )

Note: Don't download it if you're just updating a single computer. The current link is for networks, meaning more than one computer running XP. A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update. To receive this download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive an optimized download of SP2. Click here for more information on receiving Windows XP SP2. (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/default.aspx)
It's the same file, Ty. It's just that the network install is the full service pack, not just the smaller file available from Windows Update (which will still connect and download other files once you have download it). I always prefer thet network install.
Tydestra 8-10-04, 12:24 AM Oh okay... network installs take far longer to download than the singles one thou.
Yup, much longer as they are the full service pack, not just files as they relate to your system. I just like to download them and keep them on a shared drive, that way when I reformat, I have them already at hand (although, I typically slipstream (http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp1-bootcd.html) my disk).
galaga-girl 8-10-04, 06:46 AM so, if I have auto update on I don't have to worry about downloading the HUGE ass file?
Canadian80s 8-10-04, 11:01 AM WARNING !!!!!
Just so everyone is aware ... SP2 for Windows XP enstates a tight security model, this means that EVERYTHING gets locked down or tuned off and YOU have to go back and re-enable various services.
BEFORE you install SP2 for XP, make sure you know what services and applications you need upfront.
SP2 is the fix that ALL WXP Users have been waiting for, BUT proceed with CAUTION !

I also posted this in the Computer Help Forum ....
One thing I forgot to mention, but I'm sure you ALL do this anyway ....
BACKUP ALL OF YOUR DATA BEFORE INSTALLING THE SERVICE PACK !

You'll still probably wind up downloading quite a large file, just not that large. Don't think it is going to be available on Windows Update until about the 25th though. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
blackdragon 8-11-04, 01:04 AM Microsoft said it will be available through Windows update by the end of August.
The Express Install is now available from Microsoft. The initial download only weighs in at about 1.6 MB's, but will download the approriate upgrades once the initial download is complete.
