Remember those arcade games where you had to spin the joystick in order to make the character shoot in different directions?

I used to play two of them. One was called Caliber .50 nad the other was called Midnight Resistance.

Caliber .50 was a topical view game and in order to be able to shoot 360 degrees, you had to spin the joystick left or right

Midnight Resistance was a side-scrolling game, and the same rules applied

I tried them on MAME and it's near impossible as you have to assign special keys/buttons to simulte the joystick turning

Midnight Resistance was one of my favourite Arcade games. I could play it for hours, only i wasn't Rich enough to be able to afford to do so

I played Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and Time Soldiers all of whom had the 360 degree joysticks.

Midnight Resistance was cool when you got the flame thrower though

The arcade version of 720º had an odd joystick that would only rotate in a circular motion.

Well if it is still something you want to play on MAME and are sick of trying to use at least half the keyboard for movement, you may consider getting a Microsoft Precision Pro Joystick. The software that comes with that can be programmed like a keyboard. You can assign buttons in the place of keys and these joysticks also twist, not a full 180/360 degrees but probably 45 degrees each way. I have an older one that still works great, it has 3 axis's, 9 buttons (considered 10) due to the point of view hat, and a separate rotating throttle control. There hasn't been a game yet that I couldn’t play with this.

IMHO it is well worth the investment if you are a gamer of any magnitude or want to use the software to replace numerous keys.
