I was playing MAME last night and before having dinner decided to have a quick game of Asteroids, and I ended up with a score of 53960 which is AMAZING for me because I'm not terribly good at it.

I was wondering if anyone knows what games they were great at getting high scores in? When I was younger I was great at getting high scores in Double Dragon and Wonderboy - I knew were all the bonus' were in that game :)

Probably Scramble. They had it in a coffee shop near us and we all played a lot. Seem to remember finishing those screens easily and often. We would all have to wait forever to play once we all got good at it.

I used to kick ass in the orginal "Donkey Kong". It was funny as hell, I would put up "Iron Maiden" for my name when I got a high score. I had the high score on the one machine in a local pizzeria for like the entire summer. One day I was in there and these two kids about 8 years old were watching me. When I put in my name after the game they went to play and I heard one kid say to the other..."THAT'S Iron Maiden!!!"

I laughed my ass off when I got outside!:lol::laugh:

In the 80s... probably Black Tiger... I was unmatched in that game. One quarter is all it took for me to finish it with quite a nice hefty score :D Then in the early 90s it was Street Fighter II... a lot of people lost a lot of quarters trying to take me out to no avail... :gamer::lol:

MS. PACMAN was my game...I think my high score was something around 98,000 ....since I found MS. PACMAN on NINTENDO 64...I've been practicing some and up to 55,550 :)

It wasn't really a high score, but in that game WWF Royal Rumble, i was able to knock 29 of the 30 people out of the ring. That number with my initials stood for well over a year, until they got rid of the game.

Funny enough, they brought it back to the arcade about 2 years later, and my score was still there. Either nobody plays that game, or i am just too good at it

for me, finishing Arkanoid with one quarter usually nets around 700 000 points.
the world record, however, is just over 1.65 million ... !

You just have great taste! That was one of my favorites. :thumb:

Highest scoring for me though would have been 'BattleZone'. I could stand at that game for what seemed like hours on one quarter. :)

WOW, that is impressive!!! I can't get past the third level without continuing

How the heck do you finish Arkanoid in one quarter? The Arkanoid i've played in the arcades usually have funny controls. You turn it just slightly, and the paddle warps all the way to the edge.

I suck so bad, it gets to the point where as soon as i put in my quarter, it says game over

at any given time you can only move in one of two directions. that really simplifies things. since i was doing rather poorly with Defender and Stargate, i tended to favour Arkanoid. other games i remember playing at around the same time include Gauntlet II, Gyruss, Black Tiger, Shaolin's Road, Sinistar, Xevious, 1942, 1943, Galaga, Ghosts n' Goblins, Elevator Action, Bubble Bobble, Ikari Warrior and Time Pilot.

yes, the third level is rather tricky. that said, i probably poured close to thirty (30) dollars worth of quarters before i could complete the game with only one. and, it's not worth playing Arkanoid without a paddle. i'm surprised people even try the game with a keyboard or joystick (courtesy of MAME).

side note: MAME85b was released this past week; worth the download as it resolves several compatibility issues and expands the list of playable games.
