My apartment building just recently got into letting the tennants get DirectTV. I'm currently financially awkward, but I've looked at my budget plus I looked online and it looks like I might be able to do it. I called the number that was on the sign down in my apartment's lobby, and I left a message with the company that would install it. If I do get it I'm thinking of getting the Premium Service, which according to their site is $42.95 (which is cheaper than the $70 I was paying for cable), but I'm planning on not getting the local channels package, because i can watch the local stations in my bedroom.
Here are a few questions:
How do you like the service?
Do you live in an apartment building, if so did you get a discount on your service?
Also, if you live in an apartment building do you get a dish or does the installer just install a converter box and just hooks it up to a special box outside like they do with cable?
I have known people that have had Direct TV & every single one of them switched back to Digital Cable within the first 6 months.

I had it for a couple years, but I had an illegal card and got every channel for free. I really liked it, but then the people who take all free stuff away from people started cracking down and my channels were always scrambled.
I did like it alot, but I got every channel and it was free.

Hi Molly....
We have had DIRECTV for about 9 years and just love it! I forget which package we have exactly. I know that it's over 100 channels for sure....PLUS...we do have our local channels PLUS added another package so I can have my VH1 CLASSICS..and it's only about $40.00 per month. Joe hooked it up himself...just need a little bit of coaxel (sp ?) cable and it cost maybe $12 compared to their "offer of professional installation....value of $120! "
Call the 1-800 # that you see on their web site and talk with a service rep. they might be able to cut you a great deal.
As for customer service, they are excellent with troubleshooting and support.
We have had the same dish and receiver for all of these years, when they had to upgrade THEIR system ..they FEDEX'd us a new card with no cost to us and they led us through upgrading our system to their new one.
Sometimes, if there is alot of rain, or snow it might black out or rather, disturb the signal..but this happens only a few times a year at the most...during EXTREMELY HEAVY RAINS OR SNOW.
I hope this helps you out...but call them and talk with them...you might be surprised. :)
When I bought my house last June first thing I got was direct TV. I have 110 channels, plus 7 HBO channels and 12 Starz/Encore channels and I still pay $20 a month less that I did with cable and only 3 HBO channels!
PLUS, you get the music channels that are divided into genres. Nice to leave on in the background when you have company or are dining.
The service has been perfect, the reception has been perfect, and I couldn't be more pleased. PLUS, I get the YES channel - and all my Yankee games - included with basic service, and I order the NFL Sunday ticket to get EVERY game each weekend.
You can't beat that....
I pay $59 a month for Digital Cable with all the Premium channels including VH1 Classic ;) , Cable Internet, over 50 commercial free music stations for every genre you can think of. Usually if you get a package deal WITH Internet it makes you Cable bill go WAY down. BUT, the catch is -- you have to ASK for it, they won't just offer it to you.
But if Direct TV can offer me all that with Internet for a cheaper price - I might have to look into it!
