I wish I could help you, Jazz - but I don't read Fantasy or Sci-Fi books. :( Only True Crime & Mystery/Suspense.

I just got finished reading a book by James Patterson called, "Diary for Nicholas" and it was great! I highly recommend it. :)

Speaking of James Patterson, he wrote another book you might be interested in, Jazz. While it's not specifically fantasy, it is medieval fiction. The title is The Jester and it is a thoroughly enjoyable book!

Also, you may want to try the works of Harry Turtledove, he writes alot of "alternate history" novels but also writes some very good fantasy/SF works.

Jazz, I don't know if you ever read it, but if you can find a copy of "Inferno" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, I don't think you would be disappointed. Basically it mimics Dante's Inferno, except in this case it is a science fiction writer who dies and goes to Hell, then sets about finding a way out. Great read! Just have a look at some of the great reviews! Inferno at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0839824505/inktomi-bkasin-20/ref%3Dnosim/002-3341355-4131261)

I almost forgot. The Xanth series by Piers Anthony are great books. A combination of fantasy and humor that you won't find anywhere else (except at the bookstore). You can read about them here - http://www.everwinter.com/store/authorsatof/anthony/xanth.htm

"Nickeled and Dimed: Not Getting By In America" by Barbara Erinreich
"Fast Food Nation" by Eric Shlosser
"The Midwife" , "The Midwife's Advice", "Flowers in the Blood" by Gay Courter
if you can still find it anywhere "Contessa" by Helene Mansfield

All of these are are based on research--the first two are very interesting studies on American culture, and the last two sets of recommendations are novels based on research.

Either way, you draw real knowledge from them while being entertained.

I'm not a big fantasy/Sci fi girl. But here's some really good books (IMO) that i've enjoyed.

The Jungle.... Upton Sinclair

Anything by Patricia Cornwell. (she's a great forensic mystery writer)

Summer Sisters.... Judy Bloome. (a really good "Girly" novel)

I've read so many books i forgot most of them.

The Jungle.... Upton Sinclair

Talk about a book of historical relevance! Although largely unknown today, I can't think of another novel in the first half of the 20th century that had more profound social effect. The preachy socialist rhetoric gets a bit much at times, but this book is a very important work in the literary history of the US.

Excellent suggestion, SG! :thumb:

Thanks! I really enjoyed reading this book. I read it three times so far. Each time it gets better. :) Makes me happy i wasn't alive back then. Ofcourse, makes me also wonder what hell my grandparents went through when they got here too.

I have yet to read "The Jungle" but I definitely will--it's been on my list for a long time

I like "Summer Sisters" and "Wifey"

Also a big George Orwell fan, and although I haven't read a lot of his stuff, I enjoy John Steinbeck

Being a native-born Mainer, I am obligated by law to like Stephen King!

I can't forget Barbara Kingsolver and Lilian Jackson Braun

Stephen King? Now there's an author I havent read in a while!! I used to enjoy all his books up to "It" and "The Tommyknockers". Both these books turned me off him completely. In both cases he starts the stories well and builds up a wonderful plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat and then the ending lets both books down badly. Especially in the case of "IT". A wonderful story that underwhelms you with its ending.

What do other people think????

Stephen King is off my list though. ;) Just can't get into his books at all.
