Hi retro popstars - I have a MIDI file that is a 'megamix' of 80's tunes- it's cleverly done and sound's pretty cool, but I've been trying to guess all the tunes, but only got just under a half! you can download it here
http://www.tell.net.au/~glenlink/midi.htm

Every tune is linked together with a 'theme tune' - just ignore them and see if you can work out all the actual songs in order - here's the ones I worked out
YAZOO - DON'T GO
OUR HOUSE - MADNESS
THE PROMISE - WHEN IN ROME
BILLY JEAN - MICHAEL JACKSON
*NOT SURE*
FUNKY TOWN - LIPPS INC
*NOT SURE*
VENUS - SHOCKING BLUE
*NOT SURE*
SITUATIONS - YAZOO
*NOT SURE*
SOMEBODY'S WATCHING ME - ROCKWELL
*NOT SURE*
Krafterk?!?
*NOT SURE*
*NOT SURE*
*NOT SURE*
*NOT SURE*
*NOT SURE* (sounds like Madonna)
*NOT SURE* (sounds familiar)
OUTRO

Thanks people - as I am way over here in Australia, some people may experience problems with the link - in that case - e-mail me you address and I will mail it to you! rock on!

I can help you a little; that first blank is Ladies Night by Kool & The Gang.

I'm also hearing elements of Give Me Tonight, Holiday, and the group New Order all over this mix. Actually, I hear a little "Touch Me" by Cathy Dennis in hre too, but that's not 80s...

...BTW, the "official" version of Venus for the 80s would be by Bananarama. :-)

Welcome to the 80sxchange NightAire http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif right on! thanks for filling some of the blanks - it's got quite a few people here stumped http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif good on ya http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif

Yes Bananarama did an 80's version of Venus, but the one on the MIDI is the '79 Shocking Blue version eg. it's got that un mistakable wood block sound though it - bananarama replaced the sound with guitars - strange to be called an 80smegamix then huh?!? I guess there are a lot of '79 songs that are seen as 80's like Cool For Cats -UK squeeze or even Video Killed The Radio Star by the Buggles - I guess they were done very 'close' to the decade to be classed as 80's http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Yikes...somewhat tricky...but here goes:

I believe I hear "Just An Illusion" by Imagination - in one of the blanks at the top...(sorry - I lost track)

After Rockwell it is "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Indeep

The last song is "Lambada" by Kaoma.

I will listen to it again later because some of them are really buggin' me http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Hiya RetroMan http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

That's quite alright! I think I may just survive it... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
Looking forward to the updated list - in the meantime I'll keep listening to it...I'm sure my neighbours hate me by now as the walls are very thin http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Oh well - maybe I'm educating them on the fine arts of the eighties!

Excellent Kayenne! it is your duty to spread the 80's infection! you'll find a lot of people have forgotten just how superb 80's music is http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif how can people not like it?!? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
I see the song 'Fascinated' by company B is the tune that is used to link all the songs together - like a recurring theme inbetween each song

RetroMan

Thanks Tj - yeah, the toughest yet! some sound so familliar and yet hard to work out.
I think you might be right on the Madonna one - it's makes it even harder when they cut the melody track http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
thanks again TJ - another one bites the dust!

Hey RetroMan

Haven't forgotten about your mission here - have just been really busy at work. Have you found out anything yourself? I'm a bit frustrated because I don't know "Fascinated" by Company B (my internet connection is soooo slow that I can't even be bothered to try and download it in mp3 format) so it makes it a bit difficult for me to separate the bits of songs. BTW - is it just me or does Janet Jackson use a bit of that song in her new song "All for you"? Would it be possible to mark the different bits of songs with time frames (ie. 3.24 - 3.32: Indeep, etc) - maybe that would make it easier? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

I have got in contact with the original composer of the MIDI and he sent me a list of the songs, but on some he couldn't rememeber the names of te artists - this is what he sent me:

Don't Go, Yazoo
Let the Music Play,
Our House, Madness
The Promise, When In Rome
Billie Jean, Jackson
Ladies Night, Cool And The Gang
Funky Town, Lipps INC
Hungry for Your Love, Freestyle Hanson & Davis
Venus, Shocking Blue
Situation, Yazoo
Fascinated - Company B
Just an Illusion, Imagination
Facinated (chorus)
Point of no Return, ..............
Somebody's Watchin Me, Rockwell
Tour de France, Krafterk
Please Don't Go, ...............
Fantasy Girl, ................
Dancin on the Fire, ...............
Come in to My Arms, ...............
Lambata - Kaoma

so there we are - just about got them all, I thought about putting the time frames up Kayenne, but the songs chop and change so much it is just too insane!

Argh - Let the Music Play by Shannon - should have gotten that one! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Anyway - you got the titles - excellent! Please Don't Go would be by KC and the Sunshine Band (1979) or KWS (1990 - although it didn't hit the charts until 1992 I think). I think we did pretty well though all things considered http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

oh yes, my word you all did very well, considering that It an 'electronic' representation of the original tune (which make it harder)
