One year ago today, the space shuttle, Columbia, exploded over Texas and Louisiana, killing all seven astronauts aboard--including Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon--instantly. The explosion was apparently caused by a large, loosened piece of foam--travelling at over 500 MPH--struck the underside of shuttle's left wing.
It was a Saturday morning. I was at home, cooking lasagna and getting ready to go to the library to use an internet-accessible computer. Then I turned on the TV, expecting cartoons.
And that's when I heard about the Columbia tragedy.

I was at home, doing laundry and various housework...radio on for the company.....when I heard the news, I turned on the tv to watch. And that is specifically why I watched halftime at the superbowl. That was a nice tribute.
Even if I hadn't turned on the TV before leaving the house (or while cooking my lasagna), I still would've heard about the Columbia tragedy (while using an internet-accessible computer at the library)--from this site, Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com)...among other sites I frequently visit.

I was getting ready to go out with my boyfriend to the beach. We went into my family room to get something when the news came on. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was very sad to see that.

I was sleeping. My boyfriend called me and told me to turn on the news. I cried. Brought back memories of the Challanger explosion.

It reminded me of the '86 Challenger explosion, too. :(

did u guys know that the space program is a creation by the US gov't to funnel excess capital $$ in order to keep the budget in check instead of spending it on cleaning up the environment i.e. more important immediate issues? i wish i could remember what the speaker was saying but i'm in a political bio class and this guy came in to talk about economics and the environment. it was awhile ago so i 4got the examples he used but it was scary some of the stuff he was saying about the space program. anyways, i just thought it was sorta relevant... k maybe not! but if ur interested, i can dig up my notes on this. blah its late i need sleep!

I remember a couple weeks before the Columbia tragedy my husband (Jarod) and I were at my parents house checking on it for them because they were on vacation. We decided to step outside for a smoke and realized how clear the night sky was and we got to talking about the Columbia being up there so many miles away and I got this sick feeling in my stomach and have vivid flashes of the Challenger exploding and I said something like 'I just thought of the Challenger that exploded in the 80s' and my husband proceeded to say that it wasn't the Challenger that was up there it was the Columbia (which I already knew, duhh, lol). I just couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen, it was so bad I had to go inside, just being outside made me uneasy. Well we just didn't say anything about it until it happened...Jarod came home that day and i was still asleep and he woke me up saying 'You don't know what's happened do you?' and then he told me, and it just made me so sad and feel so sick inside because I had a sort of 'premonition' of it...which happens to me quite a bit :irked:.
