The Darkness Ready First Major U.S. Trek
Up-and-coming British rock combo the Darkness will launch its first major U.S. tour on March 26 in Milwaukee. The act has confirmed 18 dates through April 19 in Denver. Also in March, Real Networks will cybercast a recent Darkness concert on a date to be determined.
The tour announcement comes just as the group's single "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" is taking off at rock radio. The song moved up 21-19 last week on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks tally, and is currently the most-played clip on MTV2.
The group's debut, "Permission To Land," was released last summer on Atlantic Records. The album arrived with a flurry of hype, thanks to the flamboyant vocals of singer Justin Hawkins and the act's hair metal shtick, and thus far, has sold 165,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"When it went to radio, it brought a lot of negative calls, but the reaction was so extreme, the brave programmers knew they had something interesting and hung with it," Atlantic co-president Ron Shapiro told Billboard last week.
As previously reported, the Darkness received four nominations for the 2004 Brit Awards, to be held Feb. 17 at Earl's Court in London.
