View Full Version : Question for 20 somethings and under. . .
Even though I signed up for an account in September of 2003, I’ve only really been actively posting on here for about a month or so. So, pardon my naivete on this subject. :)
I have been fascinated by the amount of people who are posting that would have been in elementary school during the 80’s and feel that the 90’s suck.
I’ve spoken to friends that are around my age. (We were in highschool during the 80’s) And none of us really harbor a deep nostalgia for the 70’s. The most nostalgic we get is for sitcoms and cartoons we used to watch when we were little. And they all thought it was really interesting when I told them about you “young-uns” thinking the 80’s were so great versus the 90’s.
So, just out of curiosity, if you were in elementary school during the 80’s, why the deep nostalgia for the 80’s instead of the 90’s?
P.S. Just so you know. It really is that I’m curious and not because I think you’re weird or anything. I’m one of the last people who should call someone else weird! – Really, I am! :)
I just have a quick question:
If you are 28, how were you in HS during the 80's  I am going to be 33 this year & I graduated in '89.
Roemello 1-22-04, 04:06 PM How do you know he's 28? He hasn't specified his age. His post count is 28
Anyway, I fit into this category. I think I've answered the question in one form or another in various threads, but the 80s were just a special time. It was fun and bursting with originality. Great culture, great music, great everything! The 90s, although I'll admit I had the time of my life during them, overall didn't have the same spark.
It's hard to explain beyond just saying the 80s were special... if you lived it and loved it, you know what I mean :)

I'm not 28, I'm going to be 35 this year. That's the number of posts I have. I graduated in '87, myself.
And to Roemello: I'm not a he, I'm a she.
Oopsie :p I also thought he or she was 28. Sorry about the misunderstanding
jillybean 1-22-04, 04:58 PM I'm 27 so was growing up in the 80's and for me it was a time of innocence. Toys, fashion and all were such an important part of growing up for me. When I was 22ish, I found myself wanting to go back to that time and I think I have more 80's stuff NOW than I ever did before! lol When I look at some of my Strawberry Shortcake dolls, I am taken back to a time much simpler than what I deal with now. Maybe that's why I like it so much? Things were so much easier back then.
galaga-girl 1-22-04, 05:16 PM I was a young kid during the 80's, i was born in 1980 so yeah, i "should" like the 90's more, there are some things in the 90's that i just LOVE, but i had an aunty who was a teenager in the 80's, i live with her now, and back then i hung around her a lot, i listened to her music and was around her friends a lot too.
I just loved the feel of it, eveyone was expressing themselves much more than in the 90's, the music was much much better, the fashion was outrageous!! :thumb:
I really miss all my old cartoons, that is a big part of my loving the 80's, it makes me feel young again to come here and be with people that share the passion of the 80's way of life

 Sorry 'bout that. Shows how observant I am in a rush :p

Um...don't mind me. See what happens when I smoke crack before I log on to the boards? :p

I was in a similar situation and, therefore - as a precocious and only child surrounded by adults and teens - vicariously lived the 80s through them. I sometimes feel envious I didn't get to actually experience all that myself, but the few things I was exposed to as a child then will for-ever be marked in me. I look back on those times with a great deal of nostalgia because it was a happy and simple period of my early life. Unless one had a traumatic childhood, most could agree that childhood is a time one can look upon in a similar way.

Wow, we're a lot alike! I too am an only child and I learned a lot about music and other things in the 80's by my teenaged cousins. I had a lot of first's in the 80's. My first date, my first kiss, first boyfriend. I started HS in the 80's graduated in 92.
I got to spend first I think maybe 1 grade in the 80's I am unsure.
But my old home town was so retro it was like it was 1981
I do remember at least going to first grade which was really strange, as I could remember no one. I remember second grade and on when I moved to the last and second school I ever went to.
