I recently picked up this CD by Steve Steven, formerly of Billy Idol's band, Vince Neil's band, The Atomic Playboys, and (if you remember) the guitar player on Michael Jackson's DIRTY DIANA.
The CD is all flamenco music. If ou do not know what flamenco is, well, you are out of luck. (it is a spanish based music, featuring an acoustic guitar) This CD is a fabulous effort by a man who is a very accomplished guitairist. I saw him play with Vince Neil's band and can say, without a doubt he is in the top 4 or 5 players I have ever seen live.
Anyway, most of the tracks are your traditional flamenco music, all acoustic and very fluid playing. The title track is an exception, with a slightly electic feel to it, and a rocking background, almost dance music in its pacing.
Song #2 is called CINEGITTA is classic. It is a very moody, almost erotic sounding song. (when I was listening to it, my lady friend told me it would be perfect boody music)
Song #3 is called OUR MAN IN INSTANBUL and sounds more Middle Eastern in it's influences. Complete with the wailing vocal style that was in the background of Sting's DESSERT ROSE song.
Song #4 is LETTER TO A MEMORY and actually was cowritten by HOWARD JONES and features him on the piano. A very slow moving, beautiful song. Very Relaxing song to say the least.
FEMINOVA is Song #5. It starts with a voice saying "THIS WILL TWIST YOUR HEADS" and proceeds into a pop sounding song with sound clips played throughout, and over a very electronically distorted acoustic guitar. (my least favorite song on this otherwise brilliant CD)
Up next is VELVET CAGE. A very sedate number, featuring the same vocalist as Number 3 (Azam Ali) a haunting cello is heard throughout, and the guitar is nothing more than an accent on this song. Very well put together and very nice.
Song #7 is called Hanina. It sounds like all those songs you hear in cheap island based movies from the 80s. It features vocals by an artist named FAUDEL. It sounds arabic in the vocals, but not in the rest of the song. Very good song. Reminds me of a night I spent in San Jaun.
Song #8 was recorded live at Yokahama stadium in Japan. It is called Dementia. It sounds terrific, and features Steve Stevens more inticite picking. A truely great song for any fan of acoustic guitars.
Twilight in your hands is up next and it sounds like a very sedate 50s love song to start out, and slowly builds into a romantic fervor. Another one noted for its BOOTY POTENTIAL
Finishing off the CD is a song called RIVIERA '68. It is more basic flamenco style music. Very enjoyable.
This CD would make great background noise at a gathering, or could be used for booty time, if you like relaxing tunes while you are getting your freak on. I highly recommend this. If you are looking for a cd with songs, in the traditional sense, with voice, lyrics, and a chorus, then this is not for you. But, if you enjoy a relaxing, very well played cd, with terrific production, then this just may be your cup of tea!
Or, if you like Stanley JOrdan's non blues work, this would suit you as well.
:D
