Mixed reaction to Bush's space plans (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/15/bush.space/index.html)

With the success of the Spirit Lander, this discussion was bound to come up. We will go to Mars someday (IMO) it's just a question of when. I think if it is done prudently and asfely, it is a worthwhile venture. But I am somewhat of a space nerd, so I guess my opinion can be taken as slightly biased. :D

Besides, if we find something on the Moon or on Mars that we can use, it may quickly become profitable to make a better way to get there and back. Also, within the next few decades, we will find oursleves in a new "Space Race" with the Chinese, who are very hot-to-trot about space exploration.

Your thoughts?

I think it is a waste of money, but, I aint the President, so I dont get to make those calls. I wonder how much politics will go into who gets to go to Mars. (Between the astronaughts that is)

I understand your position and many people share it. However, I'm curious, do you think the entire space program is a waste, or just this proposal in particular. And if so, why the distinction?

I think the VAST majority of the space program is a waste of money. Other than satalites going up, and being able to go fix them if need be, why do we need people up in space? I just dont get it.

Just like Columbus or Lewis and Clark, Man needs to explore. Find out how and why. Or if we can make it better. Didn't you ever want to touch the stars when you were a kid? That's how I see it.

Doesn't it take like 8 months just to get to Mars?

Because eventually, not in our lifetime though, we will overcrowd this planet to the point where we will have to colonize another one. That's the bottom line.

I absolutely think we should be expanding our space program. Like Pagan said, building colonies on other planets, is the only way we will avoid the inevtiable problem of over-crowding that we are currently facing.

Either that or the people on earth will dissapear for a while with another Ice Age or Global Flooding...

Reminds me of George Carlin saying

"The planet's fine!.... the PEOPLE are f**ked! Pack your bags folks... we're going away...."

LOL

But I understand the need for exploration, that's what man kind do. ;)

I think its exciting! At this moment in time, we are not able to explore much of what's out there, so if that means man can only make it to the moon for now, then I say go for it! :thumb:

As for Pagan's comment, that's something I have thought about for awhile, and it seems so unbelievable, but who knows? If our planet lasts that long, then I can see how it would be a possibility.
