View Full Version : I've Never Been To Me - Charlene
Trixter 12-08-01, 05:06 AM Does anyone remember this song? I thought it was rather good.
Does anyone know what happened to Charlene? I know she released a second album of religious material, but never heard from her again. Any information would be appreciated.
VioletFoxx 12-08-01, 06:46 AM Not only do I remember this, I think I still have it on 45 somewhere. Unfortunately, I have no idea what ever became of her. I remember the song was used at the beginning of the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but that's about it.
Iluvthe80s 12-08-01, 10:15 AM I remember it. I recently downloaded it off of Audiogalaxy. I don't know what happened to her.
Trixter 12-08-01, 10:39 AM Thanks ladies.
Charlene, where are you?
Iluvthe80s 12-08-01, 10:41 AM That is one you need to write to the "Where Are They Now?" show on VH-1. :)
djdaffy1227 12-08-01, 11:39 AM This song originally was a 70's song peaking only at #97 in 1977. It was re-released in 1982 after a DJ in Tampa Florida started playing it again. It would fair better in 1982 peaking at #3. It is available on many Motown compilations.
Not only do I remember this song, but I know every friggin' word to it  . My best friend from high school/college and I used to sing this at the top of our lungs on every road trip we took.

Yes, it was the story of my life.."
"Do I know the song Never Been To Me by Charlene?
Of course, it was the story of my life... ;)
I still remember the words, too. :D
they play it on the local cable 80's channel here a lot.
I think I first heard it when I was 10 in the 80's thinking, 'wow, that's deep.'
and I always wondered what she was talking about when she said, "and I've seen some things that a woman ain't supposed to see."
I prob don't want to know.
here's a tidbit about her, though it's not much:
"Charlene originally recorded this in 1977, and it got to #97 in the American charts. Five years later, it was re-released after a Florida radio station started playing it to great public acclaim, by which time Charlene had moved to England and was working in an Ilford, Essex sweet shop. The re-release became a huge hit in England as well." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
Tanya1976 7-14-05, 02:16 PM I absolutely love this song. Sure, it's about a globe-trotting whore, but I still love it. She had feelings too. :thumb:
There is a small biography on the net:

bookmistres4ever 7-14-05, 04:10 PM *supposedly* this is her official website, and she is *supposedly* recording something new. http://www.charlenesmusic.com/
But take it with a grain of salt, you can't always believe what you see on the internet.
I hate that song!!!!!! A few years back it featured on a comedy show here in Australia, and it was included in a group of incredibly dorky songs!

I don't really care for it much myself, too melodramatic or something for my taste. I think I heard it way too many times back in 1984. I guess I can empathize with the message now that I'm an adult, but still, it's not my style.

Too true, too true. I *love* that song so much.
tyler_bobby 8-01-05, 05:36 PM Charlene released several albums for Motown: Charlene, I've Never Been To Me, Used To Be, and Hit and Run Lover. I've Never Been To Me was her big hit after it was rereleased in the 80s. She did have a minor hit about 2 years after with the Top 40 r&b hit Used To Be (duet with Stevie Wonder). I've Never Been To Me and Used To Be are available on cd as imports. She did record a new cd, Time Stand Still, a few years ago containing new songs and rerecordings of her old ones. It is usually available on ebay.
80s Queen 4-16-06, 09:16 AM I son't know anything about her but I love the song. Funny I should run in to this post. My friend Shelly has that song on her computer hard drive. Last week I was over at her house and she played that song. Awesome.! I hadn't heard it in years.
galaga-girl 4-20-06, 03:36 AM whenever I hear this song I think of the scene in Ab Fab when Eddie sings it in the bathroom to Saffie

No wonder it had a 70's sound to it.
