View Full Version : The forgotten "Two Hit Wonders"

SurlyOne

Many artists that are considered "One Hit Wonders" actually had more hits...but only one of their songs remained in the public consciousness. Here's a few examples:

The Knack - "My Sharona" (#1, 1979)
...and also "Good Girls Don't" (#11, 1979)

The Rembrandts - "I'll Be There For You" (#1 airplay, 1995)
...and also "Just The Way It Is, Baby" (#14, 1991) I know - not really 80's!

Katrina & The Waves - "Walking On Sunshine" (#9, 1985)
...and also "That's The Way" (#16, 1989)

Falco - "Rock Me Amadeus" (#1, 1986)
...and also "Vienna Calling" (#18, 1986)

Men Without Hats - "The Safety Dance" (#3, 1983)
...and also "Pop Goes The World" (#20, 1987)

Cutting Crew - "(I Just) Died In Your Arms" - (#1, 1987)
...and also "I've Been In Love Before" (#9, 1987)

Animotion - "Obsession" (#6, 1985)
...and also "Room To Move" (#9, 1989)

Dead Or Alive - "You Spin Me 'Round (#11, 1985)
...and also "Brand New Lover" (#15, 1987)

Sure, in each case, the second single wasn't as big as the first one, but I think any song that makes the Top 20 qualifies as a true "hit." Can anybody name some others?

Ok, here's some that I thought of...
Martika...Toy Soldiers(#1-1989)
I feel the Earth Move (#25-1989)
Kim Wilde-Kids in America (#25-1982)
Keep Me Hanging On (#1-1987)
Lipps,Inc.-Funkytown (1980)
Rock It
Toni Basil-Mickey (1982)
Over My Head (1983)

Those are some good ones! Although, Martika actually had four hits, two of which were bigger than her cover of Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move": Her very first single, "More Than You Know," hit #18 in 1989. Her last hit was "Love...Thy Will Be Done," which reached #10 in 1991 (and was written by Prince!) Her last single to hit the charts was "Martika's Kitchen," which only got to #93 in 1992 (but was also written by Prince). And not to split hairs, but Toni Basil's "Over My Head" wasn't really a hit - it only reached #81 in 1984, which means that only a handful of radio stations ever played the song. You've named some good examples!

Klymaxx-Mansize Love (it's on the Running Scared Soundtrack) and I Miss You. Those were a couple of good songs.

Ooh, I forgot about Samantha Foxx
"Naughty Girls (Need love too)" and "Touch Me" those were big songs on the dance scene if I remember correctly.

I disagree on calling Dead or Alive a "two hit wonder". Other singles did well:

My Heart Goes Bang
In Too Deep
Lover Come Back To Me
There Is Something In My House

But then again. It's probably just because I am from Europe.

That would be correct! Those singles were more popular in Europe. Some of them even did well on the Dance Music charts here. But for the most part, the only 2 songs that people in the states know from Dead Or Alive are "You Spin Me 'Round" and "Brand New Lover." Trust me, I love the band as well!!!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//PSYCHEDELIC.gif

The first song you are referring to is actually called "Tarzan Boy," and the artist was Baltimora. His real name was Jimmy McShane, and he died from AIDS in the 90's. "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" is by Timbuk 3. Two great songs!

Wow, SurlyOne, you sure do know your music!

I've got a question for you, perhaps you can answer it for me.

Neneh Cherry had another 'hit' (although not quite as big) after "Buffalo Stance". Do you remember what it was?

SurlyOne
12-02-00, 10:49 PM
Yes, it was "Kisses On The Wind," and it got to #8 on the charts! "Manchild" was the third single, but didn't do too well. In 1992, a lot of alternative stations played the song "Trout" from her second album, which was a duet with Michael Stipe. Her brother Eagle-Eye Cherry had a hit a couple of years ago with "Save Tonight."

Flix
12-03-00, 04:55 PM
Neneh Cherry had another hit (in Europe) with African superstar(!?!?!) Youssou N'Dour titled "7 Seconds". This track is from her third album "Man" which also featured the single "Woman". This was a minor hit in Europe as well.

Another two-hit wonder would be Tone Loc.
He had "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Madina", both back in 1987. I think thye both reached #3.

smile, I know of other Icehouse songs besides the two I mentioned, and I knew they released albums throughout the 80's, but as far as I know, the only singles that charted high in the US were Electric Blue and Crazy. I went through a list of every single released in the US from 1980-1989 and the only ones that I could find that cracked the top 40 were those two. I could be wrong. Were there others?

Well, it was played a lot on MTV, that's how I knew about it. However, it never charted. Their only two "official" US hits are "Crazy" and "Electric Blue." A song generally needs to go top 40 before being considered a hit. There are exceptions, though - "I Melt With You" by Modern English is considered the "Stairway To Heaven" of Modern Rock, yet it only reached #78 on the US charts in 1983.

Ok what about Times Two with "Strange But True" and they also released a remake of (Hmmm does anyone remember?? I DO!!!) but it didn't do so well.

Does anyone remember Kon Kan with a sampling of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots are Made for Walkin" called "Puss N' Boots"?? They also released another with a sampling of an old country song... (Hmmm... double quiz post!!) If I gave the title of their song... it would give away the origional.

Any Takers??

SurlyOne
3-08-01, 01:28 PM
Times Two covered "Cecilia" by Simon and Garfunkel, and Kon Kan's only real "hit" (top 15 U.S.) was "I Beg Your Pardon," featuring a sample of "Rose Garden" by Lynn Anderson. Their second single was "Harry Houdini," the third was "Puss N' Boots/These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and the final single off that album was "Move To Move."

Simple Minds had another hit, though not as big: "Sanctify Yourself," which hit # 14 in 1986. Two other singles hit the top 40: "All The Things She Said" (#28, 1986) and "See The Lights" (#40, 1991). We are talking about the U.S. here. Simple Minds are HUGE in Europe! They also happen to be my favorite band of all time!

You're right about Sheriff - "When I'm With You" originally hit # 61 in 1983; the band split that same year. Two members formed Frozen Ghost ("Should I See," 1987). Then in 1988, radio programmers started this wave of getting labels to reissue old songs and make them hits all over again. "When I'm With You" was given new life, and hit #1 that year. In the wake of that success, the two other members of Sheriff formed Alias in 1990. It seems as if there was a battle over the Sheriff name, with the name "Alias" being used and a giant sheriff's badge on their album cover!

As for Mr. Mister - they had a third hit: "Is It Love," which hit #8 in 1986.

Other possible two-hit wonders (sorry if they were already mentioned):

-- Oingo Boingo: "Weird Science" and "Dead Man's Party" (don't know if either song charted)

If Final Countdown was the only hit in the States, I really feel sorry for you guys... I'm not sure how it was in Europe (hehe) but I think they had a few hits... Carrie? (Hey, now that'd make Europe a two hit wonder.) Rock The Night? Oh well... They rule anyway.

Belinda Carlisle could be considered in this category too, though she had some little less known hits as Circle In The Sand etc... Her big hit was Heaven Is A Place On Earth (not sure about the name though) if someone doesn't remember. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Belinda had 5 bona fide "hits" in the United States:

"Mad About You" (#3, 1986)
"Heaven Is A Place On Earth" (#1, 1987)
"I Get Weak" (#2, 1988)
"Circle In The Sand" (#7, 1988)
"Leave A Light On" (#11, 1989)

"Summer Rain" also reached #30 in 1990.

As for Europe, here's a rundown of their chart success in the U.S.:
"The Final Countdown" (#8, 1987)
"Rock The Night" (#30, 1987)
"Carrie" (#3, 1987)
"Cherokee" (#72, 1987)
"Superstitious" (#31, 1988)

"Battleship Chains" (this is probably the one you are thinking of) and "Myth Of Love" off of Georgia Satellites from 86.

"Open All Night" and "Sheila" off of Open All Night from 88.

"Another Chance" off (I think) In the Land of Salvation and Sin from 89.

"The Hippy Hippy Shake" off the Cocktail Soundtrack from 88.

Denise Williams had "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" from 82. It went to #10. She had 3 more songs in the top 100, nothing in the top 40 though.

Terrence Trent D'Arby had 3 songs in the top 40. "Wishing Well" #1, "Sign Your Name" #4, and "Dance Little Sister" #30 all from 88.

Ask and ye shall recieve. Terence trent D'arby had three top 40 hits in the states. "Wishing well" #1 1988, "Sign your name" #4 1988, and "Dance little sister" #30 1988. He had two other hot 100 singles including "If you let me stay" #68 1987 and "Delicate" a duet with des'ree in 1993 #74. Deniece Williams had four top 40 hits. "Free" #25 1977, "Too much, too little, too late" with Johnny Mathis #1 1978, "It's gonna take a miracle" #10 1982, "Let's hear it for the boy" #1 1984. She had five other hot 100 hits and many R&B hits. I actually own her greatest hits collection.

There are actually many artists that could possibly fall into this category if you are defining HITS as the Pop charts only. Several artists have had 1 or 2 songs that went big on the pop charts and still did well but with a more defined audience. I may be wrong here but I think Pet Shop Boys only had 2 songs, "Oppurtunities" and "West End Girls" that were Pop chart hits. Thats not to say that they didn't have other songs that made it onto the charts, just these 2 were the only ones that made it up to the top area. The Pet Shop Boys are still making music today and have had several successfull albums in the dance/club area and Europe.

Pet Shop Boys top 40 U.S. hits:
"West end girls" #1 1986
"Opportunities (let's make lots of money)" #10 1986
"It's a sin" #9 1987
"What have I done to deserve this" with Dusty Springfield #2 1988
"Always on my mind" #4 1988
"Domino dancing" #18 1988
Plus seven other hot 100 songs.

I do agree that lots of groups are more popular then their pop status. For sake of argument I (and that is just me) stick to top 40 chart performance for one and two hit wonders.

What about Sly Fox and "Let's go all the way"? Did they ever have a second "hit"?

Murray Head with "One Night in Bangkok"?

djdaffy1227

Sly Fox is technically a one hit wonder although "Stay true" went to #94 in 1986.

Murray Head went to #74 in 1970 and #14 in 1971 with "Superstar" from the broadway play "Jesus Christ Superstar".Making him a two hit wonder.

Ok I have been reading these in ah. I have a few questions/comments. Besides Final Coutdown, Europe also had Carrie, Samantha Fox had Only wanna be with you, Love House (or those 90's do they count here?) I wanna have some fun, besides the two listed (Touch me and Naughty Girls. Ok I have a question, did information society do "think"? One last one, was it sly fox who did "let's go all the way"? Thanks again.

Yes, Information Society did do "Think!" Not much of a hit in the US, unfortunately. They are a "Two Hit Wonder" here, as both "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" and "Walking Away" went top 10. ("Running" was a #1 Club hit). Tommy Boy Records just released an amazing best-of on this band, I highly recommend it!

Has anyone mentioned Susanne Vega? There was Luka around 1987, and then the "Da Da Da DA da da da DA" song around 1993. Anoyne know What I'm talking about?

Tom's diner. It was originally a capella by Suzanne. The hit version was by DNA featuring Suzanne Vega.

I don't know if this counts because they were in all sorts of successful bands (Specials, Fun Boy Three) but does The Colourfield count? Other than "Pushing up the Daisies" and "Can't Get Enough of you Baby" did they have any hits?

Just for the records...

Edelweiss "Bring Me Edelweiss"...was a #2 in Germany and a #1 in Austria...1988
In 1992 they had a Top 20 in Germany with "Raumschiff Edelweiss", featuring a video which was kidding around with "Star Trek Classic"...

Do you guys remember Robbie Nevil (Neville?)? He sang "C'est le Vie" and he had another song called "What's It To Ya". It seems I am the only one who remembers the second song.

Anyone remember Endgames? They had two big club hits here. In the early 80s Desire could be heard in every club in the city. Shortly thereafter, First, Last, For Everything was an even bigger hit. Still here it a couple of times every weekend.

What else did they ever do?

I can only remember "Waiting For Another Chance"...was their only big hit here. I think this was somewhere around the mid-80s...

...and also "Good Girls Don't" (#11, 1979)

The Rembrandts - "I'll Be There For You" (#1 airplay, 1995)
...and also "Just The Way It Is, Baby" (#14, 1991) I know - not really 80's!

Katrina & The Waves - "Walking On Sunshine" (#9, 1985)

Falco - "Rock Me Amadeus" (#1, 1986)

Men Without Hats - "The Safety Dance" (#3, 1983)

[QB]

Tone-Loc had only two hits:
Funky Cold Medina
Wild Thing

How did each of those two songs do, chart-wise?

SurlyOne

"Wild Thing" hit #2, and "Funky Cold Medina" hit #3.

While I lack the comprehensive musical knowledge of some here, I can offer a few "2 hit wonders" that come to mind:

Breathe: Hands To Heaven & How Can I Fall (possibly Does She Love That Man...which I guess makes 3)

Alphaville: Forever Young & Big In Japan

Scritti Politti: Perfect Way & Boom! There She Was (w/Roger, I think)

The Blow Monkeys: Diggin' Your Scene & It Doesn't Have To Be This Way

Will To Power: Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way & I'm Not In Love

Sorry I can't provide the years or chart info. I'm relying on memory, which is an erratic thing.

Yes, Falco did indeed do the ORIGINAL version of Der Komisar.... VERY crappy video too! Him, pretending to run from DER KOMISAR, (blue flashing lights superimposed behind him) and singing.

Breathe had 3 top 10 hits in the US: Hands To Heaven (#2), How Can I Fall (#3) and Don't Tell Me Lies (#10). Say A Prayer got to #21, and Does She Love That Man reached #34. What a great pop band! I wish I knew what happened to them. There is one nice fan page out there, but they don't have much info on the band's current whereabouts.

That was possibly one of the lamest videos ever--and I'm not even willing to cut them slack for "the time". Yeccch!

On a related tip, I remmber The Waitresses doing a version of Der Kommisar that was out at the same time as ATF's. Stranger still, I remember a version that a local radio station wouild play ocassionally that featured all three (Falco, ATF, & The Waitresses) basically trading verses and choruses. I've never been able to find that particular edit anywhere. It may have been something the station spliced together on its own.

I don't remember a version by The Waitresses...but there is definitely a version (sung in English) by a German singer named Suzy Andrews. It was out at the same time as the After The Fire version. She has a voice similar to the singer from The Waitresses, very simple, not much of a vocalist. She also did a verion of Trio's "Da Da Da" on the album. I just found the record about a month ago. I have a feeling this is the version you are referring to - I'm a big Waitresses fan, and I've never heard of them doing the song.
