View Full Version : What kind of music do you like the most?

If you had ten albums to choose as representative of the style of music you like, what would they be? What songs stand out in that particular album? This is meant as a general question, so you can list bands from any decade, but the catch is they all have to be in the same musical style - don't just start listing all kinds of bands and albums. For example, if you're a fan of Metal music, what would you consider the essential ten albums to own? If you like Punk, which ten albums are the ones which you find yourself listening to over and over or that you consider important? So, think of the style/genre of music you like most and tell us what you think are the best, the most important, or the essential (recommendations). Hell! Even if it's not good, but has sentimental value attached to it - go ahead and name it! :)

Ten is a lot..how about the top 3?

Ten or less  You can list three. Actually, everyone can list whichever ones they like - as long as they're in the same category of music :)

Impossible. I like just about every type of music. It would be unfair of me to leave it up to one genre. Although this is an interesting thread. :)

Awright! I guess I asked this question to see the variety of musical tastes of the peeps who post here, plus it doesn't hurt to get a recommendation or two - or see who has similar likes :)

I didn't even have to think about this question. Although I love all sorts of music, I am a Synthpop/Futurist (incl. New Wave and New Romantic) fanatic to the core. I think there's more albums and compilations in that style in my collection than anything else. So, with that in mind - before I turn in for the night - I'll list the albums which I think could be a perfect introduction as well as albums which any Synthpop fan should no be without...

1. Quiet Life by Japan (1979)
2. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980)
3. Gentlemen Take Polaroids by Japan (1980)
4. Vienna by Ultravox (1980)
5. Duran Duran by Duran Duran (1981)
6. Upstairs At Eric's by Yazoo (1982)
7. The Anvil by Visage (1982)
8. The Hurting by Tears For Fears (1983)
9. Black Celebration by Depeche Mode (1986)
10. Substance by NewOrder (1987)

Granted, the last one is more of a compilation instead of a full-fledged album. I'd consider that one an essential, must-have for anyone who hasn't been introduced to NewOrder's music or who has heard only one or two songs by them on the radio. I didn't list them by order of importance, but merely by order of appearance. All are equally good :)

8. G.B.H. - City Baby Attacked By Rats
9. Geza X - You Goddamn Kids

13. Kix - Cool Kids
14. Detente - Recognize No Authority

22. Delerium - Karma
23. Peter Murphy - Cascade
24. Love Siprals Downwards - Ever
25. The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

Grant it, these are in no particular order, and I'm sure I've missed quite a few... but it's 3:00 am, and I'm winging it.

Back in for a quick edit... I thought of a few more.
26. The Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now
27. Dead Or Alive - Sophisticated Boom Boom

Okay... I'll stop now....sorry.

WOW! Some cool bands on these lists, stuff I would not expect. Such as Paw, Surf Punks, and Japan (really like this band). Very cool.

I guess this is a good thread to post this to. Back when VH1 did their show on the top 100 albums of all time it spured me to make my own list. I've been doing it slowly, really thinking about it, not just throwing albums on it that I like today and forget about tomorrow. Anyway, it's only up to 30 some albums so far. Here's the list so far, in alphabetical order (just doing the list is hard enough, ranking them from 1 to 100 would give me a stroke.)

April Wine -- The Nature Of The Beast
Bad Brains -- I Against I
Big F -- The Big F
Blade Runner -- movie soundtrack
Bottle Rockets -- The Brooklyn Side
Brickell, Edie & The New Bohemians -- Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars
Buzzcocks -- Singles Going Steady
Concrete Blonde -- Bloodletting
Concrete Blonde -- Free
Donnas, The -- American Teenage Rock N' Roll Machine
Earle, Steve -- Train A Comin'
Geza X -- You Goddam Kids !
Hell, Richard -- Blank Generation
I Love You -- I Love You
Iron Maiden -- Powerslave
Kiddie Porn -- Gift Of Hate
Marley, Bob -- Legends
Metallica -- Master Of Puppets
Misfits -- Walk Among Us
Mudhoney -- Mudhoney
Nirvana -- Bleach
Ramones -- fist 4 albums
Sade -- Greatest Hits
Soul Asylum -- Hang Time
Straw Dogs -- We Are Not Amused
Warrior Soul -- Last Decade Dead Century
Welch, Gillian -- Revival
Whiskeytown -- Stranger's Almanac
Wilco -- AM
Zappa, Frank -- Joe's Garage

If I ever get this thing done I'll post the other 70 albums then. :)

I have to agree with what Daffy said...it just depends on my mood also in choosing what type of music I listen to. Some days..I will listen to bands like AC/DC, VAN HALEN, WHITESNAKE, etc..

Some days...NIGHT RANGER, JOURNEY, PAT BENATAR, CHICAGO, REO, etc..

Some days..country music or classical music.

Instrumental versions of popular songs are nice too...

Ooops... You wanted a list by style, sorry about my previous post. Let's try it again.....

....for metal...

Dokken - Under Lock And Key (Lynch is a guitar god!)

Circus Of Power - Circus Of Power (great bluesy HR/HM)

Dirty Looks - Cool From the Wire (one of the BEST live bands I ever saw!)

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction (a great underground classic)

Testament - Practice What You Preach (the masters from the second wave of Bay Area thrashers)

Griffin - Flight Of The Griffin (another underground classic)

Sammy Hagar - Standing Hampton (more hard rock than metal)

Madam X - We Reserve The Right (a fun album with some great big hooks)

...And for punk...

MC5 - Kick Out The Jams (the one that started it all)

Modern Lover - The Modern Lovers (includes one of my favorite songs ever .. "Pablo Picasso" )

Gez X - You Goddam Kids! (one of the strangest albums I've EVER heard)

Johnny Thunders - So Alone (so good it hurts)

Ramones - any of the first 4 albums

Misfits - Walk AMong Us

Bad Brains - I Against I

Spermbirds - Something To Prove

Richard Hell - Blank Generation (took me awhile to get into this but now I love it)

Zero Boys - Vicious Circle (full on hardcore)

Ugly Kid Jeff72

I simply prefer the speed / trash of all music out there. I do like some Heavy Metal of a softer variety. Since this has turned into a top ten. I won't hesitate.

1. Fastway (self titled 1983)
2. Dokken - Back for the Attack
3. Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy
4. Dangerous Toys (self titled 1988)
5. Leatherwolf (self titled1987)
6. Metal Church - Blessing In Disguise
7. Testament - Practice What You Preach
8. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
9. Slayer- South of Heaven
10. Slayer - Reign in Blood

Alot of my favs are more of the softer metal for I would not like what I listen to today without. But, I did narrow it down to just 10. Just 10!

and another day I want some happy songs so Wake me up before you gogo, New Order, Loverboy, Guns'n'Roses, David Bowie, INXS, Eddie Van Halen, Wang Chung or anything else!! :D

or some others a big mix of this, i have like 6 or 7 minidisks of the 80s with about 65-70 music on each one so I have a large choice!!

Ok... this was crazy tough to narrow down, so I'm making this mainly 80s only because I'd never be able to break this down to 10 if I included all the early 90s as well... this was hard enough! Of all the genres I like (which is pretty much everything except country :p), Freestyle Dance is my fave. List in no particular order:

'Sa-Fire' - SaFire
'Show Me' - The Cover Girls
'Exposure' - Expose
'Scars of Love' - TKA
'Bad of the Heart' - George Lamond
'Cynthia' - Cynthia

Stevie B. kept recording well into the 90s, but I think his heyday was mainly in the late 80s and early 90s. I was more of a Johnny O and Expose type of guy, though :)
