The The opened up for Depeche Mode when I saw them on the Songs of Faith and Devotion tour. They were the best part of that night, as the rest of the show was the Dave Gahan - Look at my Butt show. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I'm blanking on their biggest hits, but The The was always a very straightforward, honest band that had good meaning to their songs.

The name makes it hard to look them up on the Net, but there have *got* to be sites dedicated to them.

Try the official site, http://www.thethe.com/

Several people were in the band at different times. Biggest names are Neneh Cherry and Marc Almond.

Good stuff!

Cool website. Neneh Cherry!? She was in the band at one time? Is that the same girl who sang "Buffalo Stance"? I loved that song... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yep, same girl. They're a really good band. You never know what to expect from them. They're pretty good about exploring the outer fringes of their music.

Should I buy a CD one day if I see them? Which one?

Sal, I would recommend going all the way back to 84 & get "Soul Mining". It's the only The The album (ooh, vinyl! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I own. The lyrics are so raw and emotional, but sometime later I think he went a little over the top with lyrics. Been years since I heard anything new, though.

Marc Almond wasn't actually ever a member of the band, was he? If so, when? I was a HUGE Marc Almond/Soft Cell fan for years! Even saw Soft Cell in 82...only time they came to L.A.

Yep, he was a member. Check out http://www.thethe.com/ for info.

thanks for the link! cool site...haven't finished browsing, but read the histography and some stuff.

still doesn't sound like marc was really a "member"...more like passing thru during that some bizarre phase. i have that some bizarre compilation album that the the, soft cell, depeche mode, blancmange, etc. are on. so maybe that was it. unless you know more detailed info?

you seem pretty knowledgeable about nitty gritty stuff...cool! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

My wife calls them my "Fun Facts." I get people in my club calling me all the time or stopping by to ask minutae about Miatae. Heck, our club mechanic installed lowering springs and shocks on a member's car. He wanted *me* to listen to a noise it was making instead of the mechanic. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm like a sponge for useless knowledge. Must be the journalism degree. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

Soul Mining was an instant hit with the folks I knew. Getting the synths to sound like French accordian music was just so different. I kept expecting to hear Edith Piaf singing instead of Matt Johnson.

Infected and Heartland were great off the album Infected too but after that I lost touch with them. Definitely some must-have tracks for any serious 80s tapes. :)

*lol* And we had Miranda Sex Garden as openers for their show here...I think most people regretted there were only papercups to throw on the stage, as they were exceptionally bad. :D

Good you dug this out, Bogie...I have almost forgotten The The. Iīm not quite sure, but didnīt Matt Johnson released a new album in the late 90s?
Will update myself about them soon...the music of The The was truly unique.

Wavey, I know he put out an album influenced by country music of all things. Seems Matt went through a Hank Williams phase. I didn't really like it. Can't remember when that was but he probably has more recent stuff available.

Heh! I also saw The The open for DM on the Faith and Devotion tour in 1993 or early 1994... at the Target Center in Minneapolis, which looks just like a multi-thousand-seat bathroom *g* DM was awful, but The The rocked.

LMAO @ the Dave Gahan Look at my Butt Show!
