View Full Version : '867-5309/Jenny'....Did You Ever Call The Number?
Iluvthe80s 11-24-01, 01:12 PM When the song "867-5309/Jenny" was out, I know lots of people who called this number just to see what the number was in their area. Did you ever try it? If you did, what place is the number for?
At the time the song was out, the "867" prefix was not a working prefix in Austin. With the growth of Austin in the last few years, we now have the prefix. During an 80's hour on one of the local stations here they decided to call the number. It is the number to one of our local hospitals here called St. David's.
80sTrivia 11-24-01, 03:40 PM I remember that my older sister and some of her friends called the number; I don't remember what the number was to. I do remember there being a lot of flak after this song came out, so much so that many places actually blocked the number from rotation for a number of years!

Roemello 11-24-01, 05:24 PM We've actually had this conversation before....check it out here:

Oops...hold on, that was one of those scenarios where the question was raised and the topic spun off to something else...lol. Humorous to peak back at anyway...
Nevermind...carry on! :D
867-5309 was a working number around here. It went to a private residence, but I'm pretty sure they got sick of the calls and had their number changed after a while. I don't know if it's back in service again.
My best friend had a crush on a guy whose number started with the 867 so we'd sing it with his phone number and "Danny" instead of "Jenny". ;)

I even looked to make sure that it had not been posted before. No wonder I didn't find it because it was in the New Wave section. I don't think I would have considered this song New Wave. Oh well! Gives some of the newer members a chance to talk about it.
Roemello 11-24-01, 06:20 PM I wouldn't consider it New Wave either, but somehow it ended up there....guess I was too lazy to move it in my early Admin days :p
I thought it was originally in here, but figured I'd run a search in there and see...and there it was...
djdaffy1227 11-24-01, 09:22 PM This song is on Rhino's New Wave hits of the 80's vol. 5 (I believe) It is considered to be on the more "punk" side of New Wave. New Wave was originally a "radio friendlier" style of punk before the synthesyzer (sp?) became the main ingredient of New Wave. Groups like The Knack, The Clash, Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, Blondie, Violent Femmes and more were examples of that form of New Wave.

Ditto! And a Hair Band Junkie and a 80's pop junkie, etc. ! LOL :D
We tried this from our music room at school. We had that area pretty much to ourselves and they were dumb enough to put a phone in this practice area.
Not only did we try this number (not in service) from this phone but we used to order cabs (all different companies and see which ones showed up first...very bad I know LOL. We used to call all sorts of people ...we were brats.
I am going to try that number again though :D
VioletFoxx 12-03-01, 03:51 PM Hehehe. Man, I don't know anybody who didn't try to call 867-5309. Down here it was a construction company of some sort back in the day. I have no idea what it might be now. Hmm, I just might try to find out. Hehehe.
Dancingdoll1986 12-03-01, 06:18 PM Cindi and I called that number constantly....can't remember what the number went to around here...but we also put every area code in front of it and tried it that way too. Her mom&dad were pissed at us when they got the phone bill.
No, I've never dialed that number. It probably would've been a long-distance number, anyway.
Throughout the '80s, Mississippi had only one area code: 601.
In September 1997, Mississippi had been issued a second area code: 228. It covers the three Gulf Coast counties: Hancock, Harrison and Jackson.
In April 1999, Mississippi had been issued a third area code: 662. It covers all of north Mississippi.

Well, now there's two of us. :p
seinfan01 12-20-01, 07:02 AM No, I've never dialed that number.
Make that three.
Although, I've looked up 867-5309 on www.whitepages.com (http://www.whitepages.com) to see if there were any in town (I imagine most of those numbers are unlisted).

Never called that number... too busy calling the airlines and requesting two first class tickets, one for me and my pet monkey! :D
Cartoon_Chris 12-31-01, 01:11 AM Something similar happened with AC/DC and the "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" album. As the hitman in the title track, Bon Scott sings he can be reached at the phone number of "36-24-36, hey" (measurements, get it?), and well.....
I'm a bit confused as to how you dial a six-digit number, but apparently it happened often enough that someone in Libertyville, Illinois sued the band in '81 over the prank phone calls they were getting.... but the case got thrown out. :hammer:
Shortie Blonde 1-04-02, 09:09 PM  Today actually, I used that number on an art project on graphic art. :p
