View Full Version : 70s groups that tanked in the 80s

Anybody think of any groups that were cool in the 60s &/or 70s, but just did not translate well into the 80s?

I think of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship. I loved their music in the 70s, but when they tried to go mainstream pop in the 80s (e.g. We Built This City) I just cringe.

Kill me for saying this if you want, but I liked Starship's song "Sara".

As for acts that didn't make a good transition (Hell, I don't think these acts made one at all):

Kansas and Lynyrd Skynyrd

Sincerely,

I like Starship's "Sara" too. It's a good song, but I think they tried too hard to conform to the 80s style. Jefferson Airplane was when they were great. Grace Slick...gotta love her.

I actually like the song "We Built This City."

bands that declined in the 80's, Alice Cooper would be one, What about Aerosmith, big in the 70's, virtually disappeared in the early and mid 80's but came back bigger than ever from 87 on. Finally in my opinion Bruce Springsteen went downhill in the eighties after great records like Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, however from the point of fans and record sales the 80's was the best decade for the Boss

I think I might have liked the Starship music better if it were not done by them, if that makes any sense. I know groups can "evolve" in their music, but they just tried too hard to fit in to the mainstream and didn't have the same soul I love in Jefferson Airplane.
I agree Springsteen's pre-80s stuff was better too.

I can think of only one: Fleetwood Mac. Their music in the 70's was awesome. But, the couple albums they put out in the 80's were just not as good. They had great moments but the magic was gone.
I can think of another: Heart. They had some great music in the 70's too. But, in the 80's they really floundered, IMO. It seemed like the only reason they put anything out was so they could pose for videos.

A few groups that come to mind.

Supertramp: Made some good music in the late 70s. Had a few top 20 hits in the 80s, but never got that magic back, IMHO.

Steely Dan: I loved the music they did in the 70s. By the 1980s it was over!

Led Zeppelin: They ruled the 70s hard rock. By the 80s it was over.

The Who, The Guess Who, Eagles, Grand Funk Railroad, E.L.O., Deep Purple

Meatloaf, he all but disappeared in the 80's and did make a comeback in the early 90's

I'm not saying this guy bombed in the 80's. (I don't think I heard anything else from him later) but I Loved this song growing up from the 70's.

"met my old lover in the grocery store.
the snow was falling Christmas eve..
Stole behind her in the frozen foods,
and I touched her on the sleeve..."

who was that, and did he do anything good in the 80's?

I don't know who that was Vilji.
A lot of the country stars that were big in
the 70s died in the 80s and came back in a big way again in the 90s.

Vilji, I like that song a lot, too. I can't remember who did it though.

I agree about Meatloaf. He was completely unheard from in the 80s.

I liked Sara by Starship, but We Built This City was way overplayed.

Did anyone mention Led Zepplin or Lynrd Skynrd?

It is "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg and went to #9 in 80/81. :) He had 9 top 40 hits in the 80s.

They did not "tank". :) They decided to not go on after the death of the drummer. :)

Hahaha, I didn't mean that song was a country one. Just that they all died in the 80s. ;)

I love the song you mentioned and I had totally forgotten about it. Haven't heard that in years.

Did Led Zeppelin tank... or just more or less retire and go their separate way?, In Through the Outdoor sold well, but after that I thought they basically split apart with Robert Plant doing solo work and Jimmy Page also doing his thing

Dan Fogelberg. thanks, Tj. That's cool that you'll always know right away when you hear a song from the past. :)

I know who he is, but I can't remember what else he did. Anyone know? (even if it should be posted in another forum.)LOL

I didn't realize Robert Palmer was in Led Zeppelin...was that before or after Power Station? :p j/k I'm sure you really meant Robert Plant. :)

Some other songs Dan Fogelberg did that you'd most likely recognize are :
"Run for the Roses", "Leader of the Band", "Hard to Say", "Longer". All great songs.

Fogelberg also had a big AC hit in the mid-90's with "Rhythm of the rain/Rain". His greatest hits CD is definitely worth the money, however, don't ever pay to see him live. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. All he did was blues jams with the band. He played two sets one acoustic and one electric where he played "Heart's hotel" in each set but never played his biggest hit "Longer". When the show was over, it was over, he didn't even do an encore. I love his songs but will never go see him live again, if he even still tours.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the one group that always gets associated not only with the 70s, but with DISCO.....

The Bee-Gee's!!!!!

(Although I did love them in the 70s and I had my first mad crush on Andy Gibb.)

Haha .. I was just watching VH1's, Behind The Music about saturday Night Fever and was thinking about the Bee Gee's..... I'd like to add STYX to this list, they did have Paradise Theatre in the early 80's, but they were basically a 70's band

One of Canada's greats: Trooper. They had tons of excellent hits in the 70's. Although they released a few albums in the 80's, their only BIG 80's hit that I can recall was 1980's Janine

Dan Fogelberg and not really. The song was called "Another Old Lang Syne" and I'm pretty sure it was a 1980-81 hit, right around Christmas.

One I see hasn't been mentioned is America. They made a comeback in 1982 with the EXCELLENT You Can Do Magic. They had a minor hit with the classic Ian Thomas song Right Before Your Eyes that same year, and in 1983, had their final hit with IMO their greatest song The Border
