There are plenty of songs that were held off the No.1 spot by something totally rubbish. My vote goes to 'Vienna' by Ultravox which only got to No.2 here in the UK, held off No.1 by 'Shaddup Your face' by Joe Dolce Theatre.

My vote goes to 'Vienna' by Ultravox which only got to No.2 here in the UK, held off No.1 by 'Shaddup Your face' by Joe Dolce Theatre. Shakey 10-19-01, 09:22 AM I'm gonna have to go with "She's a Beauty" by The Tubes. I loved that song. djdaffy1227 10-20-01, 09:45 AM Too many to mention. I wish Purple Rain would have. That was only a #2 single in the states. Thankfully Joe Dolce wasn't as popular here although "Don't worry be happy" was just as bad and it did go to #1. Unfortunately Ultravox wasn't that popular here either, I don't think they ever cracked the top 40. Where can I go to make sure my picks hadn't reached #1? Caligula 11-08-01, 02:58 PM anyone know how high The Sun always Shines on TV got by A-HA I like it better than Take on Me...and Yeah the Tubes, She's a Beauty is also great Iluvthe80s 11-08-01, 04:29 PM Andy Taylor's "Take It Easy" should have went up the charts a little further than it did. I love that song!!! Greg Kihn Band "I Lost On Jeoperdy" should have been #1, but only peaked at number 2 because Michael Jackson was plugging up the the top spot. I don't understand why a few Milli Vanilli songs only peaked at #7 or #3 or #2...back in 1989, it should have been #1 for sure (especially "Girl You Know It's True"). Even though "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin was a tad to cathcy and sugar coated, it earned it's #1 place just by being the pop culture icon it was in 1988. The same thing happened with Los Del Rio's "Macarena" in 1995. --Jeff Chasey 11-10-01, 05:50 PM The Sun Always Shines on TV gave A-ha their first and only UK number 1 in January 1986. Take On Me Peaked at number 2 in October 1985. Flix 12-05-01, 09:37 AM Steve, what kept Take On Me from reaching #1 in the UK? I can't remember what song it was. Chasey 12-05-01, 01:56 PM I'll endevour to find out Flix when I return home from work....gotta dig out that Guinness chart book y'see ;) Kayenne 12-05-01, 02:13 PM My guess is Midge Ure "If I Was", Jennifer Rush "The Power Of Love" or Feargal Sharkey with "A Good Heart" :) Those were all around at that time..... Chasey 12-05-01, 04:43 PM It was indeed the lovely Jennifer Rush with 'The Power Of Love' that kept 'Take On Me' from no 1. Flix 12-05-01, 05:00 PM Too bad. The Power Of Love was nice, but nowhere near the 80's anthem Take On Me is. Therrall 12-11-01, 04:27 AM Hey Mikey, just checkin up on you, making sure everythings in order ;) Recker 12-14-01, 09:11 AM Hey Therral, just checkin up on you, making sure everythings in order. Power of Love? My favourite version of that song was Air Supply's. |
