A few weeks ago I heard a song by a new young pop starlet called Samantha Mumba with a song called Body II Body. And the producers have 'stolen' a very large sample from David Bowie's timeless 'Ashes to Ashes' - I can't believe I'm saying this, but it actually sounds ok - maybe it's because I'm mad on the original song - patucularly that crazy synth sound and I've always loved the bass line, but the saturation is subtle and it flows well in this new song, and I think it's ok. Yikes! don't tell anyone I said that, however I'm dissapointed with Young Aaron Carter's cover of Bow Wow Wow's I Want Candy - I though it was really
sad - and the brittish group 'A1' covering Aha's Take On Me - that thumping kick ass beat and the super synthesizer - where have they are gone! the song just doesn't get up and go like Aha! where's the magic? where's the beat? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif
Sometimes I feel like these new versions are sucking the soul out of the original 80's magic music. what does everyone else think??

Quite honestly, I haven't heard any of these remakes. However, I will say that the originals can never be duplicated in quality and very unlikely could they be enhanced...especially A-ha's "Take on Me" That song is set the way it is...great video too http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Most of the songs of the 80's had a magic that reflected that time and culture. For any remake to capture that magic, the 80's would have to come back into our cultures in full force. We can only wish....

But that's just a wee theory of The Roem's http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

yeah, it was the 'culture' that came with the decade that I guess they can't re-create - The Aha clip is my all time favorite music video - the band that does the remake clip does try to capture the 'spirit' using some special effects to look like that early 80's movie 'Tron' with the blue grid and those freaky motor bikes.
I guess they are now understanding that music ruled in the 80's and a huge majority of radio listeners love it
and it works - that why they're trying a second time around (I guess it's a safe way rather than do a new song)

It's okay to like some remakes. Some can even sound better, I guess. I haven't heard any that I like - but I bet I will someday... I wouldn't feel bad about it if I were you! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Hi Guys, http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wavey.gif

One example of a cover version I like that's quite different to the original was The Chime's version of U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". They gave it a "Philadelphia soul treatment" and it sounded fantastic. I believe it drew high praise from Bono himself http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//Exclamation.gif

Jim

yeah! where did I hear that!?!? ah yeah - it's a female singer right? yes that is a great version - I saw it on a video show very late at night. Another 'good' cover version (I thought) was the cover of Gary Numan's 'Cars' done a few years back by the fearsome 'Fear Factory' the heavy guitars updated the sound - and I thought is was so cool how they got Gazza himself to play his Moog synthesizer on the track and singing the verses alternately - I thought it was done very tastefully - I wonder what Gary thought?!?

I guess 'Take on me' is impossible to do better than Aha themselves did it!
My theory is that it's much harder to cover a song that was such a big hithttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Often a song that was a 'semimegahit' (new expression I just came up with)http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif can do better as a cover!
This is where I should give You some examples to prove my theory, I just can't remember themhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I'll get back on that...
As for A1, their 2nd single 'same old brand new You' has kind of an 80s sound to ithttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I actually thought it was an old song when I first heard it on the radio! Not too badhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gifHey, I just realized: One of the worst thefts in musical historyhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//mad.gif A few years ago 'Dario G' took the backing vocals from 'Life in a northern town' by 'Dream Academy' and made a song using only like two lines from the original!! He made a hithttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
If You can make a great hit, with only a fragment of another song, that song has to be REALLY good, right?
http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//icon36.gifI'm still thinking about covers that are better than the original...I know they exist!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//GOOFY.gif

...Or why not just 'SMH'http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

I'm probably setting myself up for a blasting here, but!!! Has anyone heard "Let's go all the way" by the Insane Clown Posse? Can't honestly say that I have liked any of their other music, but this one struck a cord with me. Kind of a hybrid of metal and rap. They didn't completely remake the song, they just sampled it. I think a complete remake of this song would be about a blasphemy, but to sample it as they did actually sounds decent. Anyhoo. Just my two cents. Just wondering if anyone else had heard it and what you might have thought?
