Time for a New look

Simon Donohue

BACK IN BLACK: New Order
MANCHESTER heroes New Order are getting back to basics as they work on their latest album, which is currently being brought to life at the band's Macclesfield studio.

Gillian Gilbert, who joined as keyboard player at the time of the band's transition from Joy Division after Ian Curtis' death in 1980, is not working on the new release and has instead been replaced by an (unspecified) guest guitarist, joining bass player Peter Hook and singer Bernard Sumner.

Gilbert, partner of New Order drummer Stephen Morris, didn't join the group on their most recent tour.

A source says the latest New Order sound is similar to that which they produced in their previous guise. "It is much more like Joy Division again," he says.

"Gillian has left completely and they don't write so many keyboard parts any more."

I thought her leaving was due to a baby but it wasn't permanent?

As long as the sound stays the same, it's fine with me.

I am just glad we aren't waiting nearly 10 years for another release.

Ugh! NewOrder's sound will be different if they take out the keyboards and add more guitars. Not that I don't like Peter Hook or guitar sounds, but synthesizers are what gave NewOrder their trademark sound...
