MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (AP) - R&B singer and actress Aaliyah died Saturday along with seven others when a small plane that was to carry them back to the United States crashed after takeoff in the Bahamas, authorities said.

I know this isn't 80s related, but it just a tragedy that someone that talented has been taken away. Just thought some of you might want to know.

This is truly devastating news. Someone so young, beautiful and talented with a bright and limitless future ahead of her... these sorts of tragedies always give me pause to think about how fragile life can often be. :(

Yowch! That isn't right at all. Wasn't she supposed to be in the upcoming sequels to "The Matrix"? Well, we'll miss you, Aaliyah. :(

Sincerely,

I had not heard this but it is very sad. Here is a little information I have on Aaliyah: Born Aaliyah Haughton on 1/16/79 (so young) in Brooklyn New York raised in Detroit. Married and later divorced from R Kelly, the producer of her first hit. Her pop hits included:
Back and forth #5 1994
At your best (you are love) #6 1994 written and originally done by the Isley Brothers in 1974
Age ain't nothin' but a number #75 1995
I need you tonight #60 1995 this was Junior M.A.F.F.I.A. featuring Aaliyah and sampled I wonder if I take you home by Lisa Lisa
If your girl only knew #11 1996 rap by Timbaland
One in a million #25 airplay charts 1996
4 page letter #59 airplay charts 1997
The one I gave my heart to #9 1997
Are you that somebody #21 1998from Dr Doolittle starring Eddie Murphy
She had other R&B hits as well and will be missed. I believe she just released a new CD as well.

That's a real shock! does that mean that 2 more celebrities will die? Something about celebrity deaths always coming in three's. I'm not sure where I heard that.

OMG!

this is really sad news. (thanks for posting it. I hadn't heard anything.)

She is really cool. Not only a great singer and dancer, but she did a lot of work to help people become aware of breast cancer prevention, and helped with organizations about it...She's somebody I really respect.

that's so sad! life can change in a heartbeat.

It is sad to hear of such a young singer/actress losing her life in this tragedy. My daughter heard on the news while they talked about the crash that Aallyah was cast in a role for the new sequel to The Matrix.

It's very tragic indeed and I couldn't believe it when I first read it, but it was on the news here too. :(

Aaliyah had her greatest hit with "Try Again" from the soundtrack to Romeo Must Die in which she also starred. She was supposed to be in both Matrix 2 and 3.

She's one of the few current stars I actually did like a bit of music from...she was quite good. I remember when I first heard 'Back & Forth'...knew she was going places. She was good in that 'Romeo Must Die' flick too with a promising acting career ahead....

Really is a tragic shame... :(

Yep. She really showed what kind of talent she had in "Romeo must Die". Things like this always make me wonder what could have been...

I haven't a clue who she is. But it's terribly sad when something like that happens to some so young.

Chuck Schuldiner says it all with the title to a song, "The Fragil Art of Existence".. You never know when it's going to come. It almost seems unlikely to remain alive at times with all the we have going on here... I heard about this yesterday, and while I'm not familiar with any of her music, I felt bad to know she's gone...

I forgot about try again. The book I have only goes to 1999 and that song came out early 2001. I am so suprised by the amount of people who haven't heard of her. She was and is very big in the R&B scene. I recently read an interview with her in VIBE magazine and she seemed very level headed about the buisness. She said she loved it and wanted her voice to speak to people. I will, again, miss her. If it's anything like 2Pac, she'll be releasing songs for next 5 years.
