View Full Version : A huge fan of 80's rap

There was nothing like the late 1980's and the rap that came with it. Bands like Boogie Down Productions, Erik B & Rakim, Schoolly D, E.P.M.D., Public Enemy, LL Cool J,....the list goes on. I now collect this old skool on CD and have a laugh when I put it in and look at my buddies face. Oh such clarity! Ha ha!
IMHO, I think that 80's stuff blows away the new. I love dancing in a nightclub and the DJ does a set of old rap(usually consisting of It takes 2,Bust a move and Funky cold Medina). But whatever it is they play it rocks. I dig the chicks dancing to this old stuff...

You won't get no argument from me on that....80's hip hop definitely kills and buries todays. Back then the songs actually sounded different and the rappers were fun and entertaining...you could even understand them all! Not only that, but they didn't have to swear every 3rd word to sell their music http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

I always loved spinning the old skool...that and freestyle were my favorites. Early 90's wasn't too bad either. It really started going downhill around late 1998...for me anyway.

I agree with ya's here. 80s rap and hip hop was Fun and Entertaining.. I think it all started going down hill with NWA. Not that I didn't like that music, but it closed the doors to the rest of it. Anyone making rap like "Bust a Move" or "Funky Cold Medina" was considered a sell-out and got a bad rep. What a bunch of crap...

Bust a Move is a kick ass song! That's the kind of hip hop I like...the kind that tells a story. All this gangsta crap has worn really thin...that and complaining about your life, bitching and moaning...eesh...get a damn life.

Will Smith brought some of that 80's sound back when he released "Big Willie Style" He stayed true to his sound and was quite successful http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif Now if the rest could only learn....

I think Will Smith made a huge impact on the music community with "Summertime". But, for some reason, nobody really caught on... Why?

(I can't believe i'm making a post in this icky forum)

I think the problem is with calling a beat and a guy talking for music! IT IS NOT MUSIC!
Music requires TONES! (and as far as i'm concerned distorted guitars and a guy screaming his guts out trying to make the falsetto singing required by the melody)

And allthough i know nothing about this type of entertainment, i'm going to try to come up with a theory =)
I think the reason why nobody followed wills trend on the rap scene is because today they are too concerned with making "music" instead of entertainment (not that will is that entertaining anyway)
Will had his comedy thing established from TV and just built on that i guess. And to me that is as far as rap can ever be taken... to comedy level.
The other ones are trying to make music but are failing miserably, that is why they stink and that is why they didn't copy will. (there's plenty of parodies of him though which just proves my point even further)
Thats all i have to say about that!

I suppose that anyone who tried to copy Will Smith would be considered a Sell-Out (in a Metallica sought of way). It has got to be gangsta rap or nothing.. That's what I think.. Otherwise, I think the rap was fun in the 80s and very early 90s.. Not anymore..

Ahh, I hear ya. Well, I'm very musically diversified.. I can listen to anything except Country. Even after the breakdancing music there were so many cool Rap songs.. Fresh Prince had Nightmare on My Street, Parents Just Don't Understand, Summertime (early 90s), oh forget about it. I can name so many fun rap songs. And HOUSE music - that was kinda like a rap song but, ahh, not.. Funky Cold Medina, Wild Thing from Tone Loc. Boy, I can really name a lot.. That kind of music can get me in a good mood. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Yeah maybe so, but you can't forget some fun 80s rap like SPACE COWBOY from Jonzun Crew or anything by WHDINI or even ROXANNE ROXANNE by UTFO, maybe no political message but just great memories to listen to

------------------
....threw you the obvious, and you flew with it on your back, a name in your recollection, down among a million same, difficult not to feel, a little, disappointed, and passed over, when i've looked right, through to see you, naked and oblivious, and you don't see me, but i threw you the obvious, just to see if, there's more behind, the eyes of a fallen angel, eyes of a tragedy...

Oh, certainly. I agree. There were lots of good, fun rap songs with no real political meaning. The talent was there - I just wonder where it went... The big "sellout" word had a lot to do with it...

Correct me if I am wrong... but I am thinking that "Will Smith" formerly known as "The Fresh Prince" was FIRST known for his music and then the sitcom and then the movies and somewhere in there is when he started going by Will Smith.

Also, I saw a show on MTV talking about Young MC. His hit 'Bust a Move' came out in '89 and in 1990 was when the gangster rap started rearing its ugly head and he was told he should change his sound and he said... no, it's not my thing.

Thank you. I was just beginning to wonder if anyone else besides me remembered the real old school rappers like Whodini, UTFO or IMHO - The Grand-daddy's of them all (Run DMC)... I really liked a lot of the rap from the 80's. Of course, that was before it became a vehicle for violence.

Not usually a forum that I post in, but I absolutely loved Will Smith! (still do.) Love DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince!

Ditto on that sentiment http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif When I first started mixing, I patterned myself after Jazzy Jeff at first. He was absolutely awesome on the wheels of steel http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Cool thing about them was their songs were always entertaining stories. Remember "Girls ain't nothing but Trouble" and the opposing "Guys ain't nothing but trouble"? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
