I recently went roller skating for the first time in years. They were playing old school jams wich I'll post about at a later time. What really stood out in my mind were the slow jams for the couple"s skate. They played:
"I still believe" by Brenda K Starr (a 15 year old Mariah Carey on backing vocals)
"Lost in love" by New Edition
"Seasons no reason to change" by Gap Band
"Ebony eyes" by Rick James and Smokey Robinson
"I miss you" by Klymaxx
"Slow jam" by Midnight Star

Great Stuff! I remember hearing them at the skating rink when they were new songs. (I didn't couple's skate cuz I was dorky). It brought back memories

Bogie still knows how to skate. Backwards even. Come take my hand, my sweet. Let me teach you.

It's funny but I can't remember any of the songs they used to play here for couples' skates. All I remember is overdoses of Another One Bites the Dust and The Timewarp.

Amazingly, "Another one bites the dust" went to #2 on the R&B charts in 1981

Yeah, it's kinda silly really. All the girls would take off their skates and stand in the middle of the rink and do the Time Warp. Doesn't make a lot of sense really. You gotta love Canadians.

This is the couples skate thread, right? OK. Here we go: they played Friends and Lovers a bit, and I Miss You, and Always (Atlantic Star). And Where Are You Now. It is hard to remember all of them....Goodbye was last skate a couple times. They played Touch Me by Samantha Fox for fast skate ALL THE TIME!!! If I think of anymore, I will come back....

I still remember the song that was playing when I first ever skated at a roller rink. It was "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes. My cousin and I used to never miss a Friday Night at the roller rink when we were in Junior High. Last time I put on a pair of skates was in 1995. I miss going roller skating.

This is interesting to me. At our skating rink they played nothing but R&B. I can't imagine skating to anything else.

The two rinks I used to go to here played everything. Pop, hair metal, r&b, etc.

Poor topcat

I never could roller skate that good either, but ice skating that was a different story. Back in high school me and a guy I used to be best friends with used to go almost every night at our local ice arena. It was like a singles bar for teenagers
I haven't been ice skating in so long I would probably fall flat on my face......that is a long way down especially for me.

Unfortunately, those skating rinks didnīt go well here...I can dimly remember we had one, but it was closed after a short time and converted to a disco which lasted not significantly longer.

I was quite good on roller skates, but ice skating...uh-oh...

Iīve dared only one time on blades, and the result was disastrous. They should have played 242īs "Donīt Crash" while I was bouncing around like the steel sphere in a pinball machine...

I was the roller skating QUEEN! Every Friday and Saturday night from age 10 to age 16.

I remember for slow songs.. "Sad Songs" by Billy Ocean.. "Hello" by Lionel Richie...

But for fast songs!!! "Egyptian Lover" by The Egyptian Lover.. "No Parking on the Dance Floor" by Midnight Star... L.A. Dream Team...
and then in the middle of the evening, they's have the "fast skate" and they were always heavy songs.. like "The Stroke" By Billy Squier and KISS "Heaven's on Fire"..and Quiet Riot's "Come on Feel the Noise".

Man.. I would practically FLY around that rink!

Bogie.. I was really good backwards too! I was just as fast backwards as forwards and during the fast skate, I'd fly by everyone and then flip around and continue flying by them backwards..

I miss skating, too!! Nobody I know around here likes to skate though.. every blue moon or so I go to the rink here by myself and skate a few laps.. but the music has changed so much that I just can't seem to get into it.

Well, I think that makes enough of us to warrant a rink at any 80s convention/party if we ever get one organized.

I looooved roller skating....Had the little roller boogie outfit and everything. Loved to do the limbo. I was one of those girls that was really flexible and was able to do the middle splits with my skates folded down to go under the bar! But, the last time I was on skates....about 5 years ago....my niece tripped me and I broke my elbow. Sooo...I've been a wee bit nervous about getting back on them.

Back in the 80's everyone skated around here. It was the hip place to go.
I loved to skate, i met my ex husband at a skating rink. So those songs hold alot of memories for me.. we couple skated to all of them....

Last year they closed it down and made it into some outlet store. I was really disapointed.. Kids now adays don't find skating fun... they would rather sit on their butts and play video games.
