Hip-hop is kind of a 90's 2000+ term. I consider Funk and R&B and roller skating jams to be hip-hop of the 80's. Some funk CD's I recently got include:
Brick
Sun
Kleeer
that adds to the greats I already have like:
George Clinton
Pariliament
Parlet
Gap band
Dazz Band
What are your favorite funk acts of the late 70's early 80's?

Great topic DJ Daffy. Some of my favorites are...
Zapp and Roger are my absolute favorite and also Roger Troutmans solo stuff.
The Commodores
Barkays
Earth, Wind and Fire
Gap Band
Vaughn and Mason and their song "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll"
Great topic, Daffy! Loved Dazz Band and Kool and the Gang, BUT let's not forget about the man - the one and only...Prince
The 80's were unfortunately also the decade where we lost Marvin Gaye

I can't believe I forgot Prince! What about the Time!
Here's a few more:
Cameo
Slave
SOS Band
I'm sorry. I just can't talk Cameo without mentioning the new Mariah Carey single. I had to yell "rape" first time I heard it! I was disgusted.
I loved Cameo's Word Up and Candy. I can't come up with anything else they did. Daffy?

Those were their two big pop hits. These ones were R&B hits:
She's strange
RigorMortis
She's mine
Attack me with your love
Sparkle
Just be yourself
Freaky dancin'
A goodbye
Post Mortem
Keep it hot
I just want to be
Flirt
You make me work
Shake your pants
Single life
Back and forth
Many of those went to #1 on the R&B charts

forgive me for being so late to this topic (noone should be surprised, however)
One of my favorite funk groups was the Mary Jane Girls, who were produced by Rick James. They were originally Rick's back-up singers. They weren't hard to look at either...

Rick James! Gret stuff! Mary Jane girls were cool as well. Do they have a greatest hits collection? I'm looking for one of their songs. Anyone remember Bootsy's Rubber Band featurig Bootsy Collins? I also like Rufus with Chaka Khan and One Way!
I just heard a few old jams from the 80's like "You're my last chance" by 52nd Street and Total Contrast "Takes a little time". Do you know any of those songs, Daffy?

can't say I know those ones.
I've got a CD version of Jesse Johnson's Ultimate Collection. It consists of either '80s tracks or unreleased tracks.
The track on that CD with which I'm most familiar is Free World--which I first heard in '85.
Jesse Johnson closely resembles Prince.
Hmmm... All this talk and no one has mentioned Morris Day and The Time yet?
C'mon everyone, sing it with me...
"I - I've been watching U
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Said I, I'm a little dangerous
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)"
