The Roxanne saga had 2 Roxannes. The first "The Real Roxanne" appeared on UTFO's first album (the same that UTFO's original Roxanne, Roxanne was on). It was a way for them to poke fun back at them for the Roxanne, Roxanne jam to show it was in fun and not meant to be taken seriously. Roxanne Shante was a different female rapper that did Roxanne's "Queen Of Rox (Shante Rox On)". UTFO also had a song on that same album called "Calling Her A Crab (Roxanne Pt2)". The original Roaxxane, Roxanne by UTFO was actually a B-Side song on the 12" release of "Hanging Out". This is not the only time that a largely succesfull Rap tune started out as a B-Side release. Salt Pepa's "Push-It" was a B-Side to "Tramp". Gigolo Tony got involved by releasing "The Parents Of Roxanne" in 1985, featuring himself and Lacey Lace as Roxannes parents. The "Hanging Out / Roxanne, Roxanne" 12" was released in 1985. UTFO's album was released in 1985. Roxanne Shante's single was released in 1985. Based on these dates it looks like the order of things went like this: UTFO releases "Roxanne, Roxanne". Roxanne Shante releases "Queen Of Rox (Shante Rox On)" in response, claiming that UTFO was dissing (80's term, YEAH) her. Gigolo Tony releases "The Parents Of Roxanne", also in retaliation of UTFO's original "Roxanne, Roxanne". UTFO releases their album which features the 2 other Roxanne tunes, "The Real Roxanne" and "Calling Her A Crab (Roxanne Pt2)". I think the reason for the 2 tunes was this. I believe that "The Real Roxanne" was done to clear up the claims that Roxanne Shante was making. By featuring a female rapper calling herself The Real Roxanne and poking fun back at UTFO, UTFO could then make the case that they were not talking about Roxanne Shante. Gigolo Tony releases his tune and I think Roxanne Shante also released another song about UTFO that did not take off. AT this point UTFO added "Calling Her A Crab (Roxanne Pt2)" to their album in response the continous slack they were receiving from Shante and Gigolo Tony.
I can't say for certain that it all happened this exact way for these exact reasons but I believe that I am remembering it correctly. I can verify the song titles, artists and dates because I have all of these on vinyl.
This is probably more info than anyone wanted but its a neat event to remeber in the early years of rap. There was also another feud in rap that occured shortly after this feud...LL Cool J vs Kool Moe Dee. If anyone is interested in the scoop on this one just let me know. <img src="eek.gif" border="0">
