View Full Version : Someone owes JK Rowling some $$$ Pagan 8-12-03, 05:48 PM Harry Potter and The International Order of Copyright (http://slate.msn.com/id/2084960/) Recker 8-12-03, 05:57 PM I guess I don't blame her for being pissed off, but I think the McDonalds/Burger King argument is quite a valid one in this case. And it's also a little like Weird Al Yankovic doing take offs of original songs. (Does he get permission from the original artists first? I don't know). Frankly, with the millions she's making, I don't really feel sorry for her. I know when AL did Amish Paradise , the guy who did the real song was pissed, I also remember Cheech talking about how hard it was to get permission from Bruce Springsteen to do Born in East LA XXX 8-12-03, 07:32 PM Originally posted by Caligula are you sure he does?. Caligula 8-12-03, 08:07 PM Originally posted by XXX Stevie Wonder was angry at Weird Al  When was this? It was Coolio not Stevie Wonder Cartoon_Chris 8-12-03, 08:08 PM The sixth question from the official Weird Al FAQ (http://www.weirdal.com/faq.htm) makes it clear that the Coolio / Amish Paradise thing was a misunderstanding. XXX 8-12-03, 08:18 PM Originally posted by Caligula It was Coolio not Stevie Wonder But you wrote that the original artist of the song got mad at Weird Al. The original artist is Stevie Wonder. Foolio sux :p Caligula 8-12-03, 08:45 PM did I get anything right?? BrandyBlue 8-12-03, 09:10 PM Okay, the stuff that is written actually using the name "Harry Potter" should be taken from the shelves, because she has copyrighted that particular character (unless, in the book, the character is Harry Potter but the name is the only similarity) Other than that, I can't see pulling the clones off the shelf--clones are usually dim shadows of the real thing and can actually boost sales of the real thing when people find out how lame they are. Pagan 8-12-03, 11:28 PM Originally posted by XXX But you wrote that the original artist of the song got mad at Weird Al. The original artist is Stevie Wonder. Foolio sux :p Stevie Wonder wrote "Gangsta's Paradise"???? Roemello 8-12-03, 11:44 PM That's what I was thinkin.... I never knew Stevie was Gangsta... EDIT: ok, I think I know what XXX is referring to... "Gangsta's Paradise" has a sample of "Pastime Paradise" by Stevie Wonder :p ValJ 8-13-03, 12:21 AM Is this the Harry Potter thread, or did I get rerouted to the rap forum? It's funny that the article calls him the "American Harry Potter" when the whole deal, accents and all, is English.... I can see her keeping her paws on the original characters (Harry Potter in China doesn't even try not to be obvious), but the knock off characters should be allowed. There is always a watered-down version of something like this. My son loved the Goosebumps books...but Fright Time was OK, too. Different characters, different story, same theme. Whoopee... Roemello 8-13-03, 12:27 AM Just thought of something... in that thread about "toys in your attic" or whatever the title was... the article showed one of the new Garbage Pail Kids stickers.... "Harry Potty" I wonder if she'll be launching a full on assault on that too :p Recker 8-13-03, 07:09 AM I think if they are actually using the name Harry Potter, there must surely be some copyright issues there. If they change the name slightly, then they can probably get away with it. PG 8-13-03, 08:05 AM Originally posted by Roemello That's what I was thinkin.... "Gangsta's Paradise" has a sample of "Pastime Paradise" by Stevie Wonder :p Right. So Foolio doesn't have the credibility to go busting Al's chops for something he didn't even write. As far as I can tell, Foolio's song is a parody of Stevie Wonder's song ;) I know. I know. This is waaay off topic. sketcher 8-14-03, 03:59 PM Rowling should try her best to stop the pirated books. After all, it's her creation. Would you like it if a badly written report was given to your boss with your name on it that wasn't written by you? As for slightly less profts, I highly doubt no one going to buy th ereal thing if they just read the fake one. Even if they didn't know it, how could they pass it up? Sounds like an opinionated 'report' to me. Weird Al parodies and stuff. Not try to pass off his records as the real thing. |
