And that was a good one, Gregory Hines (White Nights) died today of a cancer. I heard that on a newschannel. 57 years old is too young to die but he have a cancer....
R.I.P. to that man who give us his bests performances alive!
A little bio of that man:
To say that Gregory Hines has jazz in his blood is almost to neglect the music infused in his muscles, his mind, and most of all his heart. That he is one of the world's greatest living tap dancers, an accomplished actor whom critics have called "compelling" and "multi-talented," and a jazz musician as well, made him, in the words of Tic Code producer Karen Tangorra, "born to play Tyrone Pike. Once his name came up, we realized he was the only one for it." Armed with that certainty, the production waited a year for Hines' schedule to clear.
Hines first gained international renown as a tap dancer, with a seemingly effortless signature style that belies the superb control behind it, and that has influenced a young generation to follow his footsteps. That same grace and ease translated to his acting and singing, and led him onto the Broadway stage ("Sophisticated Ladies," "Eubie," "Comin' Uptown") and the silver screen (A RAGE IN HARLEM, THE COTTON CLUB, RUNNING SCARED, WHITE NIGHTS). Hines has won four Tony Awards, among them the 1992 Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his riveting portrayal of jazz man "Jelly Roll" Morton in George C. Wolfe's Broadway production of "Jelly's Last Jam."
Among his other feature film credits are Penny Marshall's THE PREACHER'S WIFE, in which he co-starred with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston; the hit film WAITING TO EXHALE, with Angela Bassett and Whitney Houston; MAD DOG TIME, co-starring Richard Dreyfuss, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, and Gabriel Byrne; and GOOD LUCK, in which he co-starred opposite Vincent D'Onofrio.
BlueMolly2001 8-10-03, 01:45 PM Holy shite, what a great loss. Both my Mom and I were big fans of his. This is totally sad. :(
 I am a huge fan of Gregory Hines. One of my favorite all time movies is Running Scared, and I had the original theatrical release poster for White Knights hanging in my room for many years. He was even on Will & Grace a couple of seasons ago. I didn't even know he was ill. RIP Gregory, you made this world a much better place.
BrandyBlue 8-10-03, 06:32 PM I didn't even know he was sick. This is awful--we have lost so many of the greats this past year.
LOSTNTHE80S 8-10-03, 06:34 PM I hadn't heard that..thank you for posting this. He was a good actor.
outofplacechild 8-10-03, 09:50 PM R.I.P to one of the greatest dancers of our time...
I had no idea he had cancer. How sad.
He bought so much verve to the entertainment world, and he will be much missed.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff...
He even had an 80s music hit with the great Luther Vandross, entitled "There's Nothing Better Than Love".
I had no idea he was ill. White Nights was one of my favorite movies in my college days. RIP Gregory.:(

That is so true Brandy, we have lost many greats this year and all were not old. It is so unfortunate. I hadn't seen much of Gregory Hines lately, I guess that is why most people had not heard much.
Maybe it is me, but does it seem as though most of the losses of celeberties have been male? There must be some coup of women actresses that are working some evil mojo.:4psycho:
R.I.P. Gregory! You will be missed.
I did not see his comedy role in Mel Brookes "History of the World", listed. Thought I may mention it, seeing it is a classic comedy I love.:thumb:
Prefab Sprouter 8-11-03, 07:14 AM Just saw this on Yahoo.co.uk
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Actor and dancer Gregory Hines, who tap-danced his way to fame in movies such as "The Cotton Club" and "White Nights," has died of cancer, his publicist said.
The 57-year-old choreographer, actor and dancer died Saturday in Los Angeles, publicist Allen Eichhorn told NBC television.
Hines, who won a Tony award for best actor in the musical "Jelly's Last Jam," was born in New York and learned to tap-dance at the age of three.
One of the last people to interview him, CBS entertainment editor Jan Wahl described Hines's death as a "great loss.
"He was not just a fine tap dancer, musician and performer. He was also a very good actor," said Wahl. "He could it all: comical on TV, a fantastic leading man who had the power to take us away on the stage."
Wahl said Hines had not appeared to be ill in the interview two months ago. "He was dancing, acting better than ever."
In one of his most famous movies, "White Nights," he worked alongside ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Hines also had roles in "Deal of the Century," and worked with actor Billy Crystal in the crime film "Running Scared."
Other movies in which he starred included "Eve of Destruction," "A Rage in Harlem" and "Renaissance Man."
Hines also directed the film "Bleeding Hearts," which tells the story of a white male school teacher who falls in love with one of his black female students.
When Hines "was allowed to be his musical self, he didn't need a story or ... a character to be playing. He was just doing what he had done his whole life," critic Leonard Maltin told CBS.
So young too. :(
I had heard he was sick. RIP Gregory. :(
Greenway88 8-11-03, 09:31 AM Goodbye to Gregory Hines. He was a great dancer and I enjoyed him voicing the father of Little Bill on Nick Jr.
Out of all the recent celebrity deaths, this one saddens me the most. Gregory was a class act. He shone in everything he was in, from the cameo in "The Muppets Take Manhatten" to his masterful portrayal of "Bojangles".
The man was golden.....R.I.P. Gregory, hope you and Gene Kelly are wailin' up there.
djdaffy1227 8-11-03, 10:40 AM Gregory Hines even hit the Billboard charts in 1987. It was a duet with Luther Vandross that went to #1 on the R&B charts and #50 on the pop charts. The song was called "There's nothing better than love".
He will be missed :(
Opheliarose 8-11-03, 11:41 AM Man, I sure did not see this one coming :( He was one of my Favorites!! I loved him In Cotton Club and that Movie he did with Sammy Davis Jr, I believe the Title of the Movie was called Tap!! He was an awesome Dancer and Actor!! He will truly be missed!!
Jefferson Starship 8-11-03, 12:48 PM It was a strange coincidence... last night they played Renaissance Man here... and he was a kind of teacher/general in that movie... he was very great in that role!!

Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal were Running Scared in the '80s.
80sTrivia 8-11-03, 05:27 PM I was quite shocked to hear of Gregory Hines passing, as I did not know he was in ailing health. I caught an episode of Will & Grace in syndication last night featuring Gregory, and he was his usual suave and debonair self. He will certainly be missed, as he was an amazingly talented dancer... :(
outofplacechild 8-11-03, 06:41 PM It's odd...
Today on Black Starz!, they were airing 1983's "Deal Of The Century", which co-starred Hines with Chevy Chase and Sigourney Weaver.
It reminds me of the day last year that Robert Urich died. On Encore, they aired "The Ice Pirates" the same day he passed on.
Just a similarity I noted.
Either way, I think Gregory will be featured in the next Academy Awards "In Memoriam" montage in 2004, alongside Katharine Hepburn, Bob Hope, Robert Stack and another Gregory...Peck.
Damn, so many have gone this year.
Hines was definitely cool...He had a style to him that will never be seen again.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff
I was truly saddened to hear of his death. This man was a class act all the way around.
