View Full Version : Silly Question
morningmyst 3-25-01, 06:42 PM I'm soo out of the loop with this kind of music. What's the difference between House Music, Freestyle music and Rap/Hip-Hop? Is there a major differnce?http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//confused.gif Inform me! "more input"

Roemello 3-26-01, 03:57 AM All of those were my specialty in my 4 1/2 years as a DJ in the mid/late 90's. The difference is something you can only really figure out by hearing the different styles...at least that's how it is for me. For instance, a recent example of a House tune would be Madonna's "Music" Freestyle would be like "Point of No Return" by Expose. You can take a listen to anything by Run DMC or LL Cool J's 80's stuff to hear hip hop at it's best.
There may be someone out there that goes deep into the heart of what's what, but for me, it's always just been something I know by hearing. They're all pretty similar, there's just a little difference in style in most cases.

Sal Collaziano 4-16-01, 10:03 AM For Morningmyst - try "Tears may fall" by TKA - that's an example of another great Freestyle dance song.

Expose would be considered Freestyle? I just thought they were pop... what do I know

Yep! Expose was the only name I recognize. Thought they were just considered pop also.

Roemello 4-18-01, 12:23 PM Nope...'Come Go With Me', 'Point of No Return', and 'Let Me Be the One' are very much Freestyle. Although a couple of their songs did make the big pop charts, they're a Freestyle group for all intents and purposes http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-19-01, 09:15 AM Let Me Be The One. Hmm. The only song I know with that title is from Safire. Did they really have one? Can you throw the chorus at me, Roemello?

Ok, I don't have the actual lyrics, so this is just by ear as to what it sounds like....
Let me (show you how I feel)
Be the One (that I need some love)
Let me (give you what is real)
Be the One (that I long to love)
Only you can make me feel this way
I'll give you all my...*can't understand the rest*
I'll give you more and more so
Let me...be the one (hold on to the dream)
Let me be the one...
Sound familiar?

Roemello! Wow! How can I forget that song?! An awesome one! I need to make a CD with some of that type of music on it... I love that song! I'm not sure which I like better - that one of the other one by Saffire. They're both completely different...

Roemello 4-20-01, 07:16 PM Ok, you figured it out...couldn't believe you didn't know it right away! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//eek.gif I had to flip the CD on and type those lyrics as the song played http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif
Yeah, they are both completely different. Expose's is a more low tempo and relaxing song, while Sa-Fire's is way up-tempo http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif. Personally, I like Sa-Fire's 'Let me be the one' better...love the up-tempo stuff http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

morningmyst 4-21-01, 05:48 PM Hey Sal......I couldn't find "Tears May Fall" by TKA, but I did listen to Come Get My Love....and, I liked it. Guess I had no idea what I was missing......I'm still a metal girl, but this is pretty good, too.

djdaffy1227 5-03-01, 07:47 PM The group 5star did a song called "let me be the one" also. I think is was Freestyle, I just call it a dance tune.
morningmyst 5-07-01, 05:09 AM Does "Chant" music go here, too??? That music is so eerie and creepy, you can't help but like it.

Roemello 5-07-01, 11:34 AM Sounds like that would fall into the 'Rave' category so yes, it does fit in here I guess http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

djdaffy1227 5-21-01, 08:51 PM The different styles of music are generally told apart by beat count. Hip hop is anywhere from a slow 60+ BPM (beats per minute) to about 100 BPM. Freestyle and House are fater, most house music is 120+ BPM where as techno and Rave is a much faster 130+ BPM. and so on and so forth.
