View Full Version : Any Fantasy Genre readers out there?
While I have read Harry Potter, (and it is good-I also finished the 5th book in 24 hrs) no that excludes him. ;)
I am talking real fantasy genre authors like Williams, Salvatore,
Weiss & Hickman, and my favorite 4, David Eddings, Raymond E Fiest, Robert Jordan, and if you like backstabbing Monarchs with families who squabble over who will get the throne, then I fully recommend George R.R. Martin's series A song of Fire and Ice starting with A game of thrones
If you are looking to cut your teeth on something more than Potter, start with Eddings The Belgariad series about a boy who would be king in the most unlikely way.
If you have read Fantasy, what have you read, and who is your fav? :)
gazmanoz 9-01-03, 08:21 AM I've read just about all the Eddings fantasy books ie. Belgariad, Mallorian(sp.), Elenium.
Loved them lots. I liked the combination of David & Leigh Eddings for Belgarath the Sorceror, and Polgara the Sorceress. (Belgarath is probably my fave one)
I've noticed lots of people reading these books now probably because of Harry Potter and Lord of the rings being so popular.
I didn't mind Magician by (Feist?) either, but haven't gotten back to the rest of the series.
Do u like Anne McCafferey? I think some of hers r good
One author I disliked was Katherine Kerr tho.
My favorite is the Eternal Champion (Elric of Melnibone) series by Michael Moorecock. It is a must read for fantasy fans....
Rhelawen 9-01-03, 10:24 AM I read books by Anne McCaffrey, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Piers Anthony, etc. :) I will be looking into the Eternal Champion series also, as it was just recently recommended to me by a friend. :D
gazmanoz 9-01-03, 07:51 PM Looks like I will be looking in to Eternal Champion also, as I'm looking for a new fantasy read.
Also who was the author behind "Discworld", I think it was Terry something. I used to love those books as a kid, very funny!
Mr. Badd 9-01-03, 08:26 PM ALL of Michael Morrcocks books are awesome! Easily my favorite author.

I believe the author of Discworld is Terry Pratchett. :)
gazmanoz 9-01-03, 09:08 PM that's it thanks! :)
WaterDragon 2-16-04, 11:26 AM Ok, this looks like an older thread, but it was still on the first page, so I figure it's fair game. ;) I love the fantasy genre--to write, as well as to read. (I write both fanfic and original fic, though nothing's really been posted/published as yet.) I do like JK Rowling--was really into reading Harry Potter fanfic for a while. But I got into the genre long ago, when my teacher read us CS Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe for our English class. I read all the Narnia books over and over (and I'm rather embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure out how much of the symbology was Christian  ) and another, slightly similar series called The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, which are based on Welsh mythology.
I graduated to Anne McCaffrey in my early teens--I was an absolute Pern fanatic for a few years. I also discovered Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency), Terry Pratchett (Discworld novels--very funny if British humor is your thing :D ), and Melanie Rawn during high school. A friend of mine turned me on to Mercedes Lackey when I was in college, and she's still one of my favorite authors--I've read nearly everything she's written except for the urban fantasy stuff; the themes in that are a little too dark for pleasure reading. But her Valdemar stuff is fabulous, and so are her Elemental Masters series and her modern retellings of myths/fairy tales... I also like the newest world she's working with, starting with the novel Joust. Combine her usual meticulous characterizations, a world that looks like ancient Egypt, and dragons, and I'm on cloud nine! :thumb:
A lot of the other authors I like are more "young adult" type writers... Don Callendar, Tamora Pierce, Patricia Wrede (her Enchanted Forest Chronicles are a hoot), Brian Jacques, etc. I do like some other more "serious" authors, though--Guy Gavriel Kay is amazing, and I like Terry Brooks's Magic Kingdom of Landover series. (Tried his Shannara series and couldn't get into it, however...) There are probably others that I'm forgetting.
Definitely. I have yet to read a Dragonlance book that I haven't liked. Even those by other than Weis and Hickman. I also am in to the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, The Guardians of the Flame series by Joel Rosenberg, The Belgariad etc., the Deryni series (and the Adept) by Katherine Kurtz... Generally, I prefer books that carry the characters over. I hate getting to "know" a character and then have the book end. I always think...then what? What happened next?
I've read a good number of the Xanth novels by Piers Anthony. I really got into his work for a while. I loved The Incarnations of Imortality series and also the Apprentice Adept series, though that one was more scifi.
Fantasy Genre??? That's an easy one....
My vote would go to Mercedes Lackey. She did a series of books patterned after the popular game by Electronic Arts titles 'The Bard's Tale'
She would often bring in guest authors to assost her in the books. They are works of art! If you haven't read them, I highly suggest you do!!!!

I have read all of those. Fantasy and humor are a great mix. :)
nolanbuc 5-03-04, 02:14 AM I used to read alot of SF and fantasy, but not so much these days.
Fantasy wise, I've read everything by Tolkien, most of the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, the DragoLance novels by Weis & Hickman and alot of their subsequent series. That's all I can remember right now. :goofy:
