View Full Version : I Just Don't Know What To Do With This Younger Generation
Iluvthe80s 7-02-03, 10:04 PM There is a girl at work named Carli and she is 19. I am totally amazed at how much stuff this girl has been missing out on considering she does have some older stepsisters in their late 20s. She has never seen E.T., she has never heard the song "867-5309 (Jenny)", and she thought the Care Bears were a new toy for this generation. This is a small example of the things she doesn't know.
A co-worker and I are helping this poor girl out by bringing her 80's CDs and giving her a list of movies she should see. All this girl knows is music artists such as 50 Cent and Ja Rule! :6ohboy: Poor child!
I think you will get a kick about the following dialougue that happened between Carli and Sandra (the co-worker who is exposing Carli to the 80s):
Sandra: Have you ever heard of the group Chicago?
Carli: Where they in that movie?
Sandra: (Laughing) No, not the movie. They are a music group.
This younger generation! I know not all of the younger people are that bad, but people like Carli just make me laugh.
Roemello 7-02-03, 10:45 PM I'd expect that from maybe a 12 year old, but 19 with zero 80's knowledge? Yikes!:lol:
Poor, poor depraved child....
Christine 7-02-03, 11:53 PM At least all teenagers are not so ignorant about the 80's! :p
lol Can just picture that conversation taking place.
ImSoooSure 7-03-03, 01:41 AM My 16 year old cousin saw a guy wearing a Ramones tee-shirt and said, "Wow that's so cool, I love that shirt." I said "Oh, you like the Ramones?" She says, "Who?, I just think it's a neat looking tee-shirt." I'm at the very least gonna make her listen to and appreciate "I Wanna Be Sedated!" She also asked me if I've heard the cool song on the venus razor commercials.... well, it's been made and re-made but I want her to atleast know the 80s version! She's such a cutie!

She's depraved? Crap! Introduce us. :D Oh, wait... I bet you meant deprived didn't you. :p
Brand1974 7-03-03, 06:29 AM Well, you also have to figure in that she was most likely born in 1984, possibly late 1983. Therefore, she was maybe 5 when the 80's ended? I was born in '74, and my memories of the 70s were very vague. I remember a few things, but no way was I socially conscious enough to know which band was singing what. I also never saw Star Wars during that time either, and for the most part listened to what my mother had on the radio. So, I can certainly understand why she might not know who Tommy Tutone is (or other 80s) or the name of the song, if she wasn't exposed to it.

I did not get this until I looked up the meaning of depraved :goofy:
That is too funny Stacy! I am sure you all will straighten her out. ;)
Soon all the younger generation will know the 80's they are coming back. I see it every day in fashion magazines, and hear it on the radio. Even some of the hairstyles are coming back. I see crimped hair and ankle boots more each day. :)
LOSTNTHE80S 7-03-03, 08:46 AM Stacey..you MUST teach this girl LOL!
I think it's funny when the younger ones TRY to talk about what they think is the 80's (like they were there you know) and they don't have a clue.
Fer instance: HANDS ACROSS AMERICA started in a wheat field during FARM AID when MADONNA made her debut by singing PAPA DON'T PREACH! LOL!! (This is an actual statement)
Iluvthe80s 7-03-03, 05:50 PM Believe me Jana, Carli will get an 80's lesson from Sandra and I. We are already getting her hooked on some 80's music. :D
LOSTNTHE80S 7-03-03, 07:17 PM AWESOME! Send her my way and I will take her into the vault of lost "treasures" LOL!
