Thought it was time to start a new thread for this.
I've got two books to mention. Read Cerulean Sins by Laurell K. Hamilton on friday. Very good fantasy book. Part of a series she has. Right now reading Kushiel's Avatar by Jacqueline Carey. The third book in a trilogy. Great set of books. Highly recommend both of these. :)

Great book, read it a couple of years ago :) The Colin Firth thing is great, but you can easily tell that they've screwed up who to cast for the sequal movie! :D
I'm currently reading all of the Janet Evanovich, 'Stephanie Plum' books - even though I read them all last year! I think book 9 is out very soon in the UK, but may wait until it come sout on paperback. I'm also reading 'The Importance Of Being Ernest' beacuse I've really started to appreciate Oscar Wilde - such an interesting man with a way with words. Has anyone seen the new-ish movie? Worth renting? :)
80sTrivia 6-24-03, 06:45 PM I am re-reading Jean M. Auel's Shelters of Stone. I read it in hardcover when it was released last year, but I felt I should read it again now that I have to review it for the paper as it is now out in paperback. :)

The first book had me dying laughing - I keep meaning to pick up the second one.
I recently read Diary of a Mad Mom-To-Be by Laura Wolf, I think... pretty hilarious stuff, though if you're on the fence about wanting to have kids, it might scare you away :D
I am in the middle of Ahab's Wife by Sena Naslund. I'm having a tough time getting into it, but it's good so far.
Also rereading The Mists of Avalon for the 4th or 5th time, while waiting for my friend to finish Harry Potter 5 so I can get my hands on it

Christine 7-27-03, 06:43 PM I'm still reading Order Of The Pheonix but I just started "Nights In Rodanthe" by Nicholas Sparks. :)
80sTrivia 8-15-03, 07:49 PM I'm currently reviewing Jon Krakauer's riveting non-fiction best-seller Under the Banner of Heaven, which tells the story of two young brothers who claim they were "ordered by God" to murder a young woman and her infant daughter in cold blood. I really enjoyed Krakauer's previous books, Into Thin Air and Into the Wild and his current book is equally well written. :thumb:

My Secret Life: An Erotic Diary of Victorian London
by James R. Kincaid ... I'm a little perv :naughty: I'm usually reading about three books at a time.. I'm also reading House of Leaves
by Mark Z. Danielewski
Wow, my friend read House of Leaves. She said sometimes it got really technical on her, but that it was a riveting read. She told me about it. I'm not sure I could read that, but you never know. LOL
Your other book.....Whoa :naughty:

80sTrivia 9-28-03, 06:05 PM Am currently reading John Grisham's Bleachers for review. It's a definite departure from his bestselling legal thrillers, and is a short novella about the game of football. If it has Grisham's name on the cover, however, it will still sell in the millions!

80sTrivia 10-19-03, 06:46 PM I just picked up a copy of Patricia Cornwell's Blow Fly, the latest in her mega-bestselling Kay Scarpetta novels. Certain to be a blockbuster and to make her millions of fans happy.

I've been to the library a lot lately. I just finished "The Last Vampire" and "Lillith's Dream" by Whitney Strieber. The one preceding these, "The Hunger", was out.
"The Last Vampire" was good. "Lillith's Dream" was way too disjointed. He went so far back and forth with weirdness that it was hard to make much sense of it.
Of course, I've been reading plenty of brain candy romance novels in between. I'm averaging 2 to 3 books a week.
I'm about to start "Silent Partner" by Stephen Frey.
I recently finished Douglas (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) Adam's final book "The Salmon of Doubt". ACtually it is the first 10 chapters of the book he was working on at the time of his death. It would have been a fantastic book. :( I loved what I read. It is also chocka block full of articles and unpublished bits and pieces which they found on his computer. Some real gems.
A great tribute to a master of sci fi comedy.
I was then inspired to reread his book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, a book I last read back in the late 80s. Great stuff!
Jazzmyn 10-30-03, 01:46 AM Started reading the new Anne Rice today, Blood Canticle. Really good so far. :D
Culture Club Freak 11-16-03, 03:36 PM "The Lost Boy" by David Pelzer
it's about the author going through foster care.
it's a sequel to "A Child called"it"
Just finished "Einstein"... a history of Albert Einstein
I'm reading "The Holographic Universe" by Maichael Talbot for the 4th time.... my favorite book ever! Highly recommended.
and currently scanning the lastest issues of Fangoria, and Bass Player magazines.
80sTrivia 11-16-03, 04:22 PM I am currently reading for review Scott Spencer's new novel, A Ship Made of Paper. Scott Spencer is the author of the bestselling novel Endless Love (yes, that Endless Love that was turned into a movie starring Brooke Shields.) I'm having a little trouble with the implausible plot at the moment, but I'm only three-thirds the way through the book, so I will reserve judgement until I've finished the novel! :)

80sTrivia 12-27-03, 10:58 PM I am re-reading Ayn Rand's towering classic novel, The Fountainhead. I first read the book in college and had to write a paper on it. For that reason, I don't think I enjoyed the book as I should have, so I felt I had to give the book another try, all these years later. It is indeed a classic; no wonder it is required college reading. :)

I am currently reading two books, the first, SEE NO EVIL tells about how the CIA was basically castrated by political ambitions of people, and how it lead to 9/11.
The second is STEVEN KING ON WRITING, his memiors and how he started on his path of becoming an author.

In 1972, after enduring years of embarrassing defeat at the hands of Soviet "amateurs," Canadian officials convinced their Moscow counterparts to allow a pre-season, eight-game series between the best hockey players from both nations. For Team Canada, this meant a chance to assemble a "dream team" of NHL professionals and show the world that they still owned ice hockey.
Cold War: The Amazing Canada-Soviet Hockey Series of 1972 takes you to the back rooms of the diplomats and apparatchiks who sanctioned this unlikely confrontation--and then puts you on the ice for the rest. The first four games were played on Canadian soil, in four different cities; the final four all took place at the Lenin Sports Complex in Moscow. Despite the absences of Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull, Team Canada's lineup was a memorable one: The Brothers Esposito, Phil and Tony; Paul Henderson; Serge Savard; Ken Dryden; and Frank Mahovlich. Canadians across the continent were confident of a complete blowout. "Eight-game sweep!" the leading sports columnists predicted.
But the Red Machine came prepared. The Soviets' fast-paced game of precision passing and surgical attack caught the cocky (and somewhat out-of-shape) Canadians off guard. By the time the series headed to Moscow, the Soviets had jolted Canada and insured that the remaining games would be remembered as perhaps the most fiercely fought hockey of all time

I read City of the Beasts (http://www.isabelallende.com/city_frame.htm) by Isabel Allende. I can really recommend it, its one of those books that keeps you excited from the first till the last page. My wife just finished reading the sequel, and she claims it's just as good. Can't wait for the third part of the trilogy. (Not written yet)
Flood Tide by Clive Cussler. As soon as I finish that, I am going to begin his newest Dirk Pitt novel "Trojan Odyssey".
I was then inspired to reread his book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, a book I last read back in the late 80s. Great stuff!
That's a great book. I've read that several times since I first read it in the 80's.
Christine 1-01-04, 03:09 PM "A Misfit's Manifesto" by Donna Gaines - it's a book about this woman's life and how rock 'n roll affected her. It's really powerful.
80sTrivia 1-04-04, 09:31 AM I'm currently reading for review Bruce Wagner's Hollywood parody Still Holding. I have read his other "Hollywierd" novels with the cell-phone-terminology titles: I'm Losing You and I'll Let You Go. Wagner has a true sense of the bizarre undercurrent that permeates the dream factory of L.A., and his characters are so outrageous that you know they must actually exist somewhere in the wasteland of So. California! :thumb:

Patrick McMullan. Lots of great pictures of the decadent NYC nightlife of the 80s. There's even a foreword by Jay McInerny, author of the 80s classic novel Bright Lights, Big City. I had to order this imported from the UK, so it might be a hard-to-find title...

Right now I'm currently reading "Tears of Rage" by John Walsh. It's the true story of Adam Walsh, which is his son who was murdered in 1981. I'm only half way through the book, and believe me it's a tear jerker. As little as I was when this happened I can remember seeing stuff on the news about it. So sad.

I finished the third book in my trilogy a few days ago. It had The Sword Of Shannara, The Elfstones Of Shannara, and The Wishsong Of Shannara. It was good, but the first story dragged in parts. The second was the best of the three. It was 1191 pages, so I needed a break for a few days...
Probably tonight or tomorrow I'll be starting The Heritage Of Shannara, which has these four stories in it:
The Scions Of Shannara, The Druid Of Shannara, The Elf Queen Of Shannara, and The Talismans Of Shannara. It's 1238 pages of reading, so wish me luck.

Here's a review...it should give you an idea of why I think everyone should read this book!!!
Klosterman's highly touted debut has as much to do with Fargo, N.D., as the Coen brothers' slice of Americabre, Fargo. That is, nothing at all, really. Misleadingly titled to cash in on Fargo's cinematic mystique, Klosterman's memoir about growing up a sexually repressed metalhead, with a humiliating (mom-dictated) Richie Cunningham haircut is actually set in Wyndmere, N.D. Klosterman starts up with a bang ("You know, I've never had long hair"), shifts gears often (from memoir to music criticism, somewhat jarringly at times), and rarely idles. Ultimately, though, Klosterman, ironic throughout the book, does not write with enough sincerity to prove his thesis "that all that poofy, sexist, shallow glam rock was important." Granted, it's a daunting task to write a hymn of praise to the genre that spawned David Lee Roth so the author wisely stretches his pop-culture references like taffy. In the final chapter Klosterman, now an arts critic for Ohio's Akron Beacon Journal, quotes a friend's definition of a "guilty pleasure" "something I pretend to like ironically, but in truth is something I really just like" to explain how he really feels about glam metal. His closing summation of what metal means to isolated kids in the heartland will strike a power chord for many readers. (May)Forecast: Klosterman has tapped a gold mine. Fans of 1980s Motley Crue, Poison and Ratt are pushing 30 and 40 and seeking a nostalgia trip. Also, Gear magazine will run an excerpt of the book along with a conversation between Klosterman and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler.

So, Pamela Anderson has decided to be a writer! I'm sure it's a Jane Austen-esque, comedy of errors and will receive a raving review! ;)
Tydestra 7-20-04, 11:51 PM Oh gods! Traci Lord's book was a disappointment, I'm thinking Pam's book will follow suit.
80sTrivia 7-21-04, 07:14 AM I haven't read Traci's book, Ty. I've been reading the first few chapters of Pam's novel and I am guessing that it was ghostwritten for her, as it's not all that bad, just entertaining in a trashy sort of way!

80sTrivia 7-31-04, 09:01 AM The newspaper has been sending me some interesting book choices for review lately. Received a copy of Joan Collin's latest foray into the literary world, Misfortune's Daughters. This is an advanced copy as the book is not scheduled for publication until March of next year. Seems interesting that a publisher would risk buying one of Joan's novels after Random House sued her to try and reclaim a $4 million dollar book advance they lost on the actress. I've read some of her stuff before and she's a pale shadow in the writing department, even compared with her bestselling, glamourpuss sister Jackie Collins (Hollywood Wives)...

80sTrivia 8-19-04, 11:45 AM Just finished writing a review of Edward Ball's new biography Peninsula of Lies. It's the fascinating true story of former British aristocrat Gordon Langley Hall who emigrated to the United States after WWII and befriended American high society before having a controverisal sex change operation in 1968. The newly christened Dawn Langley Hall scandalized Charleston, South Carolina, society by marrying a young, African-American mechanic and "having" a young daughter with him. Comparisons are being made to John Berendt's wonderful Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which told an equally scandalous tale about Southern Gothic madness in Savannah, Georgia. And I agree with the comparisons! :thumb:

Metalfan83 8-21-04, 12:40 AM I've been reading Ghosts: Investigating the Other Side of Life by Gary S. Hawkins. Not a bad read, really. He's been around both my home town of Colchester and Macomb. I've also been reading The Bootlegger , which is also about my hometown.
Martika_Fan 8-21-04, 03:13 PM Well a while ago I finished two 80's books: Tom Clancy's "Patriot Games" and Frank Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns"
Now I'm reading William Gibson's "Mona Lisa Overdrive" (1988)- its less confusing than his earlier cyber punk future urban decay sci-fi, "Neuromancer", which is one book I'm gonna have to start again from the beginning.
I'm also reading the controversial 80's novel "The Wasp Factory" (pretty gross, but funny nonetheless), and I'm re-reading "They Shoot Horses Don't They" (to date my favourite book ever)
