View Full Version : Anyone like The Smiths?
Please, tell us your favourites and why? I will come back later to discuss my attraction to the wonderful world of Moz and The Smiths ;) Or discuss any other Indie Rock band like REM or The Smithereens ;)
Heck! Break the rulz and write about bands that sound like The Smiths that others may or may not have heard of! Yeah, I'm thinking of Idlewild here! Check them out!
djdaffy1227 6-08-03, 07:18 PM I like The Smiths better than Morrisey solo. I love "How soon is now". I like the way it was sampled in Soho's hit "Hippy chick" too.
80s&Indie_Obsessed 6-08-03, 07:41 PM I lurrrrrrrrve the Smiths!!!!!
They're my favourite band ever :]
And, err, who was the person who introduced you to Idlewild J? :D

Heeheehee :D It's a great band. If The Smiths had gone into the 90s, Idlewild would have been them... or maybe Suede, or maybe Kent! Nah, Idlewild is to The Smiths as Japan is to Roxy Music. They're all pretty close in sound. I love those analogies :)
Speaking of analogies, I hope you did well on your exams!
80s&Indie_Obsessed 6-09-03, 06:29 AM I do recommend to everyone who likes the Smiths to check out Idlewild - they're fantastic, and it's great that I can feel that way about a recent band!
I also prefer the Smiths to Moz solo, but he has done some good songs. There was a documentry on him last night in the UK, it was quite interesting :)
I also love REM too, also too many favourites for me to pick just one. There should def be an 80s indie board :D
(Oh, and I haven't actually started my exams yet - my first one is on Friday - arghhhh! I'd better get back to revsion!)
I love The Smiths!!! I can't stand REM though. And as for Idlewild, the songs I have heard from them on the radio here are really great! There is a song that they just started playing by them that is a live version. Do you have any idea what that song is called? :)
"Live In A Hiding Place" It could be "American English." Their guitar work is an homage to The Smiths. They are undeniably influenced by them.
I guess I am the only one who likes Moz solo as much as The Smiths. I think they both have their... charm :) His solo stuff is more Alterno while The Smiths were a little more Rock. That's just the impression I get. Viva Hate is his best album as a solo artist, although I also loved Vauxhall and I. In the same vein, The Queen Is Dead and Meat Is Murder are the best albums The Smiths put out.
I could listen to all the songs from beginning to end - all the way to his solo works. I play the music vids every once in a while from both The Smiths and Morrissey. I LOVE the vid for "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get": filmed in sepia tone with hanging lights...
I wish I had that docu :)
And, hey! Don't knock REM! Yeah, I'm talking to you
Prefab Sprouter 6-10-03, 05:31 AM Me I prefer the Smiths to Morrisey although I do like the album "Vauxhall and I". The Smiths songs were 80's classics although to me Jonny Marr was the backbone of the band. Songs like "Panic" or "How soon is Now" are classics although my favourite is still "Ask". That intro is just kick ass!!!
I love Jonny Marr's work with Bryan Ferry too. The Song "Right Stuff" is brilliant.

I thought it could be 'Live in a Hiding Place' too, as the acoustic version is fantastic! :)

Yup! You hit it right on. One the major strengths of that band was Johnny Marr's musical compositions to which Moz only added lyrics to. That is how they made the songs: Marr would compose the music, Moz would listen to it, go into his room, and come back with lyrics for it! As of yet, I've not seen one song which Moz has worked on by himself, he always has a co-writer. Boz Boorer is pretty good. I noticed a lot of my favourite songs are either co-written with him or they have Vini Reilly at guitars (from the album Viva Hate). Viva Hate is the most Smiths-like album he ever put out and I think it is because Vini is such a New Wave/Indie Rock guitar virtuoso (I think he even surpases Marr, imho). Plus, it was released right after the band's break up. "Margaret On A Guillotine" was slated to be a Smiths song...
As far as Johnny Marr's projects, I think Electronic is his best one, followed closely by The The. I've not listened to that song. It's from Bryan Ferry's new album, Frantic, right?
80s&Indie_Obsessed 6-10-03, 02:06 PM I do like a bit of solo Moz I must admit. My favourites would be:
Suedehead
Every Day Is Like Sunday
Interesting Drug
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

It's actually from the 1987 album Bete Noire, XXX, and that album is brilliant!
I like Electronic's work myself, not only for Jonny Marr, but also Neil Tennant's vocals (BIG PSB fan here :D )
sketcher 6-11-03, 09:37 AM The Smiths are ok. I've never really listened to them except for a few songs. Morrissey's solo songs were way too depressing.
It was cool hearing "How Soon Is Now?" sampled but it got overdone as more and more bands sampled it.

Bete Noire is one elusive album! A lot of Bryan Ferry's albums are, actually. I must complete my Roxy Music collection!
I like Electronic a lot! I have two of their albums and two of their singles somewhere in storage! "Disappointed" was really good, but, of course, most NewOrder/The Pet Shop Boys fans will immediately gravitate to "Getting Away." Sigh. So many wonderful memories come from just hearing the music from that song!

SoHo is the best example of the song being sampled. The Smiths took them to court since they used the famous riff from "How Soon Is Now?" without permission. In another case of blind justice, The Smiths lost that case!
t.A.T.u. is the latest band to cover the song ("How Soon Is Now?"). It sounds kinda... chirpy! Snake River Conspiracy probably made the worst cover of the song while Love Spit Love made a real good rendition of it for The Craft soundtrack. Quicksand made one too, but never really cared for it either...
I once read that Joy Division is the classic indie band, and the Smiths is the refinement of that form. I almost I agree with that.
personally, I think the Smiths is the best band
My faves are "How Soon is Now?" and "What difference does it make?"
As has been mentioned, Johnny Marr is working quite a lot with other bands now - he played on the Pet Shop Boys's album "Release" and on their 1989 album "Behaviour" (which is still one of the best albums EVER) - I love the Electronic stuff as well, especially "Getting Away with it", "Get The Message" and "Forbidden City"
Slayergrrl 1-28-04, 10:17 AM "Girlfriend in a coma"
I first heard that song back in the day on 101.7 here in boston. I even remember they played Sinead O'connor's "Mandinka" after it.
I don't know what i like about the song it just hooked me.

Exactly! My fav is "How soon is now" :)
