View Full Version : My response to all of the "humor" directed towards various nationalities...

You know, "jokes" like the "Americans, Australians, British, Canadians" post make me wonder...

Are you proud to be a citizen of the world, or are you ashamed?

With that, I would like to post something...
--------------------------------
I am a citizen of the world
I'm but one of many boys and girls
I live in this world and I feel no shame
I live in this world and know we're not the same

Stereotypes and offensive attacks
Make me wonder where "humorists'" heads are at
Humanity, on the whole, isn't such a bad lot
Though you may encounter the occasional twat

No place is perfect
And likewise no person
Yet with every new day
We become a new version

Of the people
We all wish to be
We never get there
But close? Mightily

You're a citizen of the world
You're not above it
Lay off the humor
This world? I Love It.
----------------

Of course, this is just me speaking.

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

Different people find different things funny. Frankly, I was quite amused by that post you mentioned from the Comedy Forum. I'm Canadian, and I took absolutely no offense to the comments about Canadians included in that post. I took it for what it was, a joke, which is why it was posted in the Comedy Forum. :)

I'm Canadian, and the SOB who posted the thread. I'm extremely proud to be Canadian, but can still laugh at my Country as I can laugh at myself or my friends when I do something stupid.

I didn't think anyone would take the comments offensive, it basically makes fun or 4 English speaking countries who are all wealthy and well off. It shows the difference of hte 4 by using exagerrated stereotypes that are meant to be humourous and not offensive.

thoughout your entire life, don't you make jokes about other area's?, in school we always had friendly rivalries with other communities, We make jokes in fun about other regions. I hear jokes all the time about the East coast of Canada being backwards and poor from other other Canadian, I know it's a joke and if funny I laugh. I see things posted on here about certain states , or regions and the funny comments, jokes about ireland, about France and so on.

It wasn't meant ot be offensive , (actually I even changed part of the title removing Yanks and replacing it with Americans) , I figure life's too short to get upset over the small stuff

I actually thought it was pretty funny...not offensive at all (to me at least). Most of it was dead-on. :)

I actually didn’t like the one about the French a while back, I thought that went over the line (which the collective taste of the community came to recognize). I felt the tone of that thread got to be something more hostile than good-natured, friend-to-friend ribbing. but this last one about Canadians, Aussies, et al? C'maaaaaawn.

I thought the Joke was funny. I'm an Italian American. There are a ton of jokes about my heritage. IMO they are quite funny and sometimes true!

I could never laugh at other people due to many of the things said to me throughout my life's course.

I guess I just believe if you're going to make a statement, you should be sincere. Sincerity is what it boils down to in my case. Maybe this is why I could never get into "Seinfeld"...

Sincerely,

OPC, what exactly do you find funny? I mean what makes you laugh? Do you laugh? If we cannot laugh at ourselves what is there to laugh at? Haven't you ever heard the saying " Laughter is the best medicine"?

BlueMolly2001

OPC, humor is the best thing to have. I know you have had bad things happen to you when your were younger, but to make you not have a sense of humor is pretty darn sad. To me, if you don't have humor in your life, then your life isn't complete. Laughter IS the best medicine, and it's got me though a lot of hard times.
I read that post, and I didn't really find it offensive, hey it was in the Comedy Central forum. I don't really find too many things offensive jokewise. The only things I find offffensive are picking on a person because of their mental or physical disability, since I'm disabled.

I try to find humor in almost anything...Laughter is good for the soul. You know the famous saying, "If you don't laugh, you'll cry". But if it's a brutal insult, that's another story....

I too have found myself "out of place" but I developed a sense of humor about it. While I find some humor offensive--for example, calling a person of African descent a n-----, I have learned to find less hurtful, gentle humor such as that post a little ribbing at human habits in general. I am proud to be American, but I do recognize that Americans aren't perfect and we do have some ways that may look strange to other countries. Although this poked fun at other cultures, I am intelligent enough to know that this isn't the full truth but a generalization meant to make me smile. I also know enough to get to know someone before Ijudge them and I wold never allow this humor to cloud my judgement of someone.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but I think you would enjoy life more if you learned to laugh at what is ridiculous about what is going on around you and what is imperfect about yourself. I don't think this was meant to be mean to anyone, I think most people would recognize it as silly humor (what it's meant to be) and not a true representation of all people.

It may help you to realize too, outofplacechild, that the whole world isn't out to get you, but I think that is something that comes with youth and with being someone who is different. Embrace whatever makes you so different. I did and I couldn't be happier. It lightened the load on me and lightened me up!

Smile!

The only things I find offffensive are picking on a person because of their mental or physical disability, since I'm disabled.-quoted from BlueMolly2001

Same here...only my disability is an emotional one. It's something called Aspergers' Syndrome. It's a slight type of autism and it causes me, among other things:

-To not pick up on peoples' tones of voice, to know whether they're joking or not (I have a hard time understanding the feelings behind some posts as well, like the various countries post)
-To have a hard time understanding other peoples' feelings
-Most importantly, my disability gives me a hard time in understanding the humor of the world.

I do find some things funny. I laugh at old cartoons (I saw an old MGM cartoon called "Rock-A-Bye Bear", about a dog protecting a hibernating bear who wants quiet. He faces another dog who keeps on trying to get him to make a sound)...I enjoy dirty jokes and the occasional pun...I enjoy many comedic movies starring people from Harold Lloyd to Dan Aykroyd...Many music videos on VH1 Classic make me laugh (due to the humor in them...David Lee Roth was a master of the humorous video)...I enjoy comedy albums and books.

I may seem uptight and repressed, but that's only due to my emotional disability (and my depression as well).

I'll try and laugh more, but if it doesn't quite gel immediately, don't worry. It'll happen...

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

Being able to laugh at yourself is crucial! I do find a lot of questionable jokes funny. Not because I believe I am above the people it's making fun of. Some of those jokes are just downright clever and funny. I think a lot of dumb blonde jokes are funny but I certainly dont take offense to them. I know they aren't directed strictly toward me. They are just a silly stereotype. All in good fun! If I felt somebody was being bullied or harassed, then it would be a different story. But I do understand you postition OPC and totally respect it. I think it's nice that you're worried about peoples feelings. More people should be so concerned. ;)

You have to remember something OPC, all stereotypes are based - to a certain extent - on truth. This is how the stereotypes start. I'm Italian and I laugh my ass off at the stereotype. Not all of us are hairy, jewelry wearing morons with mafia connections and big di.....umm.....well....SOME of the stereotypes are true!

You have to be able to laugh at yourself, or the world becomes a really uptight, repressed place. And if that's the case, count me out of it!

outofplacechild, I have a nephew who has Asperger's and you are right, that is difficult. I understand where you are coming from here. Just remember that the Xchange is someplace to realx--nobody here would make fun of you for your differences, and I don't think there is a soul here who would hurt anyone intentionally--there may be the occasional interloper but they are usually gone in a hurry.

Just have fun!

I have to agree with Pagan - Opc, You need to learn to relax and laugh sometimes!! I laugh at myself all the time, but that wasn't always the case!! Take it from someone who use to live their lifeuptight!! It's just not worth the stress and Misery it causes :)

I personally don't see any problem with joking about other countries, as long as it is not done to deliberately offend - i.e. because of racism etc. All countries have their eccentricities which other's find funny. The Aussies and the Kiwis always pretend we hate each other and always poke fun at each other, but it's all in fun. (For 99% of us anyway. The other 1% are just sad).

I also find that the New Zealand sence of humour can sometimes get taken the wrong way. I have found that here on this website, but hopefully in the long run, people will know that I'm not out to offend and know that I'm only kidding around.

I have a good friend (who I will call Bill) and we always tease each other. He teased me as much as I teased him. It was all in fun. We both had another friend (who I will call Mark) who had a thing about put downs and took things the wrong way. Mark actually got quite upset at me once because of how I used to tease Bill quite a bit. Accused me of being a bad friend because I put him down. It caused a falling out between us temporarily. The ironic thing is, I continued to be Bill's friend and still am, while Mark sort of just drifted out of Bill's life during a real tough time in his life. Bill and I still hassle each other all the time, but we are still good friends who accept each other for what we are and support each other throught the tough times..... Unlike Mark who doesn't seem to understand the meaning of true friendship.

Good Post Recker! My own take on this would be that firstly humour is a very personal thing. One mans meat is another mans poison. Personally I have no problem with people poking fun at the Irish. I understand that its all in good spirit and lets be honest we slag oursleves off. This board has got a comedy forum and indeed, some of the funniest jokes are the Irish ones. But you know what? I love it. I love it because I trust everyone here to respect each other and I know that any jokes posted are intended to give people a bit of sunshine in their day. I'd be the first to man the barricades if I thought that someone was deliberately putting my nation down on the boards.

I dont understand all the humour on the boards but I do know that any jokes posted are not intended to offend or cause pain.

I feel the same way. That's why I have to laugh at some of the skits the Royal Canadian Air Farce performs.

Hell, SNL and MAD-TV make fun of different cultures all the time. I don't think they mean to be offensive...I think they just want people to laugh...and with such chaotic times right now, it's a nice thing to be able to take some time out and laugh at things...even if they are directed towards your nationality.
