View Full Version : Remember Twisted Sister?
Sal Collaziano 2-02-01, 06:31 PM Well. I just went to cdnow.com and listened to a few songs from Dee Snider's new album called "Don't Let The Bastards Wear You Down". It sounds good to me! I'm gonna buy it right now. If you've got a moment, look up "Dee Snider" and listen to the song called, "Our Voice Will Be Heard". When I get the CD, I will post a review in the review section...

Geez...Twisted RULED! Back in the day before they made it big (and fell just as hard!) they used to play a TINY little club in Yonkers, NY called the "Rising Sun". We'd go to see them there all the time. We planned many a weekend around where Twisted was playing! L'Amour, the Soap Factory in Jersey, The Rising Sun (or "Rising Slum" as we called it). Those were the days! MAn, I have to go find those old pictures of me & Dee.
Sal Collaziano 2-03-01, 03:17 PM Yeah! Bring those pictures here! I can't wait until I get my CD! The stuff sounds GREAT!

The only bad thing about Twisted Sister was that they broke up!! They were awesome! I got to see them on their Stay Hungry Tour in Houston. They were touring with a brand new band called Ratt (on their Invasion of Your Privacy Tour)! The opener was Helix! What a show!
BTW, I am about to post some twisted news in the Rumor Mill (its actually fact, not rumor).

annual_mayhem, I remember that tour well. I didn't go to the show (wish I had.) The reason I remember it is because they did an autograph session at TT&R (Texas Tapes and Records.) It was in Pasadena, where I live, and I walked up there with a friend (I was 14 or 15, and it was about 2 miles from home.) It was really cool.
Twisted Sister, Ratt, & Helix, what a line-up.
Sal Collaziano 2-06-01, 01:30 PM I've never heard anything from Helix.. I've never been to a Twisted Sister (or Ratt) concert either. I need to start a video or DVD collection soon!

I know exactly what you're gonna post, Mayhem! I heard it from Dee's mouth last year at a local KISS convention he was at. It seems that the only problem is with Mark Mendoza. I think they'll iron things out though. Hope Dee grows his hair back though!
Sal,I think this post would've been more appropriate in the glam–metal/melodic hard rock section. They were transvestites!!! If that's not glam than I don't know what is.I dug Dee's post Twisted band Widowmaker also.Guitarist Al Pitrelli kicks ass.Glad to see him finally in a big band (sorry Savatage fans–hey,I like 'em to–just telling the truth) like Megadeth.Look for the new Twisted cd "Club Daze Vol.2" coming soon. Also, look for the sequel to Strangeland coming to a video store near you (you know it's going straight to video).
Transvestites? LOL!!! Kristo, I DARE you to walk up to Mark "The Animal" Mendoza and call him that!
Agreed, their look was glam, but their music was pure metal.
Sal Collaziano 2-07-01, 12:13 PM Yeah, I really wasn't sure where to post this because THEY were glam but they played Metal.. It was a rough decision. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Pagan, the last time I heard about a TS reunion was a couple of months ago in a Dee Snider interview. He said at that time that due to scheduling conflicts it wouldn't happen until 2001. That may have changed though. I hope it does happen at some point (especially if thay can recapture some of their 80's magic).
Kristo, did you ever look at the costumes TS wore? Makeup all in the wrong place, hair as wild as can be and clothes with tears all over it. They were taking ideas from Kiss, Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls. They were actually dressing that way as a joke and to get noticed, which worked. But, they weren't serious about it. Even at the height of their popularity they were often seen without their 'gear' on.

Dee admits (with humor–because he's not a transvestite really) all the time that in Twisted's early years he dressed as a transvestite.C'mon,if you know TS you have to have seen early photos of the band, you know, the club years. That look morphed into their crazy look most remember them for in the 80's,done in part with newly started MTV in mind. The silly look ended with the release of the CD "Love is for Suckers".As for them being pure metal...yes, pure in the most commercial sense of the word. From "Stay Hungary" on they were as pop and colorful as pop metal gets (hence the hair, glam–metal/melodic hard rock tag) That era represents the bulk of their career.I'm certainly not bashing them because I like them. They weren't the most talented band in the world but they made up for that with "style" and personality.Jay Jay French admits this all the time as does Dee.Buy the new Guitar One magazine and read what Jay Jay has to say about himself as a player (or lack there of) ,TS and the band he manages now Sevendust (in my opinion one of the very few awesome newer bands out there now).
Annual mayhem,The New York Dolls were pure glam in look (with a punky, glam–rock sound).Nothing more nothing less.I'm sure most of you know this but if you don't you should find this amusing:The lead singer of The N.Y. Dolls David Johansen (transvestite in the 70's) is best known to pop culture as BUSTER POINDEXTER! Now ain't that HOT HOT HOT!

I never said you were trashing them Kristo, I was just making a joke. Of course I knew what they looked like in the early days. Hell, I used to see them before they had Dee! However, I disagree when you state that the era from Stay Hungry on represented the bulk of their career. The bulk of their career was before anyone even knew who they were. They rose and fell so fast that Dee still says his ass hurts from the drop. They were mainstays in the NY/NJ club scene for many years before that. You're from Jersey, you should know that! Listen to "Under The Blade", their first album. Nothing pop or glam on that! Pure balls to the wall metal.
Talent as musicians is irrelevant. If bands were based solely on talent as musicians, alot of our favorites wouldn't have made it. Motley, Poison, KISS, Twisted...these are all marginal musicians at best. When Dee first joined Twisted, they kept him way down in the live mix because he didn't sing very well at the start. We used to call their sound man "The Secret Weapon".
Anyway, you'd have to sum them up as glam look/metal sound. They definitely became pop towards the end, but the bulk of their career was metal.
Hey guys, excuse me if my last post was a little 'in your face.' I'm not trying to incite a riot here (or an argument). Dee often admitted that he was a fan of The New York Dolls and, in part, 'borrowed' their look, that's the only reason I mentioned them. TS were not the most talented musicians, Pagan said that best. And most of their career was before the spotlight shined on them and yes their look changed over time, as does everybody's. Their success came when they went in a more pop musical direction, that is true, as it is with a lot of bands. Most of their music before that success was harder edged, ala metal.
Well, we could discuss this topic for a very long time, the main purpose of this post is to make sure that I didn't offend anyone with my previous post. If I did, I apologize. Let's just agree that Twisted Sister rocked hard and we all seem to have enjoyed their music, even if we can't agree on what to label them. Peace \/

Sal Collaziano 2-08-01, 02:29 PM Well, I got Dee's new album in the mail and will let you know how it sounds as soon as I'm done listening to it..

Pagan,I was 10 years old in 1981 so to be quite honest with you I only know about their early clubbing years from what I hear, read and see in pictures.
When I said "bulk of their career" of course I was talking about their pro years when they were internationally known which truly represented a career for them. Not just club and bar money from local touring.
That's not much of a career. So IMO they were pop–metal during the bulk of their "career".
I know "Under the Blade" was balls to the wall metal, that's why I said they were pop–metal from "Stay Hungary" on.
I agree with you about the talent factor in music (or lack there of). There were and still are very talented hard rock and heavy metal musicians but a lot of bands, especially the ones you mentioned are lacking in that department (Tommy Lee kicks ass though). But as you know that is the case in all genres of music, especially in modern metal, hip hop and r&b.Country musics talent pool has been waning rapidly the last 10 years also.I only mentioned TS talent wise as a tidbit.
In closing,I'm not trying to create an argument.I'm a TS fan like all of you.I just posted the transvestite thing as a joke ,even though it's true.My intention wasn't to create a whole new topic within a topic. The new album by Dee is HEAVY METAL IMO for the record.I'm almost 30,how TS looked or sounded is not important to me.Pagan,we're pretty close geographically so let's get together soon, have a couple of beers and talk rock 'n' roll all night.
This message has been edited by kristo on 02-08-2001 at 02:16 PM
I have a better idea Kristo...come to our next gig and I'll buy ya a beer! No one really argues in here, so don't think that. Sometimes, written words don't come across as eloquently as spoken ones. I know, my band gets into arguments over email all the time!
If you can e mail me soon with info on your band and future gigs that would be great. My girlfriend and I and a few other friends will come check you guys out as soon as we can.I'm about 30 or 45 minutes away from Manhattan depending on traffic.Just check my profile for my address.Do you guys play Jersey at all? It's great to see hard rock and metal bands being booked in clubs again.Later.
P.S. I like IMPORTED BEER hehe.
Sal Collaziano 2-09-01, 01:12 PM Hey, you know something. It might seem like arguing to some - but it's not like that at all. It's actually very impressive to see two people discussing Twisted Sister with enough passion to create a long thread like this. You two are true rock 'n rollers and that's what's important... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Pagan...Livesay...okay.Just saw the topic about you guys here.I saw you guys listed in an e mail I received from Perris Records...cool.I see you do play Jersey...equally cool. When I go to shows I usually don't get to the venue untill the headliner comes on DUE TO SLOW POKE FRIENDS.I'll make sure an exception is made for you guys.Do you know the guys in the Jersey hard rock band Jester? KEEP ROCKIN'!!
This message has been edited by kristo on 02-11-2001 at 04:34 AM
I've heard of Jester, but haven't seen or heard them yet. They're supposed to be really good from what I hear. There's another band that's really good in Jersey called Zyrus. They are tight as hell, and the singer looks like Jackie Martling from Howard Stern's show! Comes onstage in a surfer dude outfit and no shoes. Hilarious!
We're supposed to be playing at the Wreckroom soon, I'll keep you posted.
Zakk Wylde played in Zyris before he tried out for Ozzy (and we all know what happned there).I think he and Zyris' singer had a fight of some kind along time ago.Last I heard they're still not talking.I think Zakk's head is to swollen (and his liver) these days if you know what I mean.
Is that show you mentioned the Firehouse/American Slang one on March 3?

Sal Collaziano 2-14-01, 06:46 PM ANYWAY! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif I heard the album and it's pretty good. The songs I like I really like - the songs I don't like I really DON'T like! It varies A LOT. But overall, I'm glad I bought it. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Sal–getting back to the topic–there are three TS related albums coming out soon. One is going to be a tribute, one a live disc from the Stay Hungary tour and one a compilation of songs recorded from their club days titled Club Daze Pt.2.You might wanna check 'em out.
Sal Collaziano 2-16-01, 06:54 PM I certainly will. I think I'll like the stuff from their Club Days.. Their music was energetic and fun to listen too. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Gotta disagree with you there Byte...French & Ojeda were nothing to write home about. But A.J. Pero is and excellent drummer, and Mark Mendoza is a pretty decent bassist.
tigerladydeb 3-08-01, 08:18 PM what was the name of the movie that Dee Snider was in a year or so ago?

Speaking of "Strangeland", I haven't seen that yet. I have been thinking of renting it. Recommendations, anyone?
Also, since it's a TS thread - I would feel remiss not to mention two of my favorite lines from them. Here goes:
"you think you're going home, to your warm little bed. But that's impossible, you can't sleep when you're dead..." - Captain Howdy
"Mommmy" - Street Justice (That little girls voice haunted me).
Man I miss that music!

Okay. So I finally saw Strangeland. I think the thing I liked best about the movie was all of the references to Twisted Sister songs. People holding up "We're not gonna take it" signs. His handle - "Capt. Howdy". Oh, yeah. Then there was the part where Robert Englund a.k.a. Freddie Kruger played a redneck. Just to good.
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
The original TS is in the studio recording new songs for a possible tour. No tour dates have been set yet but its a real possibility. I saw Ratt and Twisted Sister on tour together in Houston. I thought both bands were great. I also saw Dokken open for Judas Priest, maybe I caught Dokken on a bad night but they weren't very impressive. That's ok though, Priest were right on, they more than made up for it. In Dokken's defense, the friction between Don and George was all over the media. It was obvious that Dokken, the band, was not a happy band that night.
