In less than a month my girlfriend and her 2 kids are about to move in. I own a house with a 2 bedroom apartment attached which I wanted to change into one big house.. However now that I start to figure out finances, it's better we don't claim commom law status and have it set up that she rents the apartment from me

here's why

she gets a baby bonus cheque from gov't of 450 a month , the less you make the more you get, she makes very little, but our combined salary would cut this down to nothing 5400 a year

she gets a GST cheque ever 3 months 150 dollars, once again, it's dependant on income, I don't get one total 600 annually

Day care, cost her 130 a week, but she get much of it back in income tax, if we live together we don't get to claim it estimate 2500 annually

this is ridiculous if we live together we lose about 7500 dollars a year (net money not gross)

So it looks like she's now renting from me :)

AMEN!

Cal, looks like the best thing to do is have here rent. So long as it does not put a strain on your relationship. I say that only because that is a lot of money to lose. Whatever happens, good luck. I wish you and your relationship the best of luck ;)

As long as the revenue office does not object...why not? Seems that Canada and Germany have at least one thing in common...screwing the tax payers to the max.

130 a week? Whoa...that's around 82€ per week, also some cool 328€ per month. That's some heavy shit to lift...are there no private daycare groups available, arranged by mothers in the neighbourhood?

Yeah you can get it done cheaper by stay at home mum's who do it under the table, but then you can't claim it on your income tax, so although it looks like a lot up front , you get a substantial amount back from income tax.

I had found a woman who would do it for 15 dollars a day , but my girlfriend claims she's insane and wanted nothing to do with her
