Oh, how I miss guitar solos. That is one of the things I hate about all this new rock. No one believes in a great guitar solo anymore. I definately agree with your ingredients.

The lacking of guitar solos is one of the things that I miss most with todays so called "metal music" ie. Korn, Limp Dick$hit. As for the others I agree except for "no gloom and doom" Does the name Black Sabbath ring a bell with you?? They were a big part of the Heavy Metal movement without them metal as we know it wouldn't have come to happen.

As Bruce Willis said in "Die Hard"....."Wrong guess, Hans!"

What you have described is real hair metal. Not that there's anything wrong with hair metal, but that is not real heavy metal. REAL metal bands are of the Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Savatage, Anthrax, OLD Metallica kind. Therefore, may I revise that list? The ingredients of good heavy metal are....

1.) guitar solos
2.) heavy guitar riffs
3.) DOUBLE BASS DRUMMING
4.) intelligent lyrics about things OTHER than women
5.) an ear-shattering singer

That is the makeup of TRUE metal music....

I don't know much about drums. What is double bass drumming? Please, explain that to me.

I agree, and don't mind, the revisions to the list. I welcome it. I'll admit it; I'm a victim of the hair bands. I also love the harder edge groups, like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath ( both with OZZY and Ronnie James Dio -- "Heaven And Hell" kicks butt).

ANTHRAX is awesome. Helloween rocks!! I saw Anthrax and Helloween w/ Exodus at the Headbanger's Hall concert in 1989. I saw Anthrax again @ the Clash of the Titans concert w/ Megadeth, Slayer, and Alice In Chains. Chains got booed off of the stage after only 15 or mins.

I think I can handle your question... Double bass drumming is the use of 2 bass drums rather than 1. Guns & Roses drummer used 1 bass drum... Judas Priest's drummer uses 2 bass drums. Listen to G&R's 'Paradise City', pay close attention to the drum beats. Then pop in Judas Priest's 'PainKiller' and listen to the drum beats. PainKiller has a heavier & faster beat which is accomplished when doulble bass drums are used. Does that help you out any?

Speaking of guitar solos, I was just watching that Belinda Carlisle video the other day, Mad About You. I mean, this is the ex-lead singer for the Go-Go's, writing her hit single, and what's right in the middle of it? A really nice guitar solo!

These bands these days...what can ya say? I hypothesize that they don't play solos because A) bending notes makes their little fingers hurt and B) learning scales is just...well, "it 2 hard"!

Belinda could probably kick their whiney wittle wimp butts in a fight anyhow. But, that's an entirely different rant

Does anyone besides me notice a direct correlation between the number of tattoos and facial hardware and the amount of pathetic whining being done by the wearers of said tattoos / nose/tongue/eyelid studs?

toodles,

Jack

Ingredients of true Heavy Metal: EXCITER, MANILLA ROAD, MAJESTY, BLACKSMITH, OCTOBER 31, SKULLVIEW, MANOWAR, FORBIDDEN, HEATHEN, JACOBS DREAM, CAULDRON BORN, CAGE, GRAVE DIGGER, RAGE, SATAN´S HOST, TORCH, ANVIL BITCH, CULPRIT, ATHEIST, ADX, OBSESSION, DEATH ANGEL, AGENT STEEL, VIRGIN STEELE, IRON MAIDEN. Fortified with one or more of the following: SKYCLAD, BIFROST, DESTRÖYER 666, DESASTER, TOXIC, HIRAX, SLAUGHTER, HAVOC, HOLOCAUST, SACRED STEEL, CROSSFIRE, WITCHFYNDE, VENOM, DARK ANGEL.........

The ingredients are many... I could go on all day. :)

Important things that make a band true to me:

1. Attitude. (got to have a Metal attitude, doing what you want and not compromising. Being true to oneself overall and eminating that through the music.)

2. Headbangability level. (heavy riffing is important.. as are solos but not too many to overdo it.)

3. Intelligent lyrics (Lyrics aren´t the be all end all of a band for me but I prefer to hear a band sing about something cool like Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner rather than "I can see I can see I can see I´m going blind". Gimme a break)

4. Lasting impression (damn, just look at MANILLA ROAD or JAG PANZER.. they keep going and going with excellent releases !)

5. If I put the cd on and the music that comes from the speakers touches me deeper at an emotional level then it is true.

Great list of bands Klad, but alot of them are death or black metal. The definition we're trying to establish is classic heavy metal. The NWOBHM, if you will.

I have only one thing to say about your list....Manowar??? AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!! The cartoon clowns of music!!! :D Man, according to both our lists, they should be no where near it! Intelligent lyrics? "All Men Play On Ten"??? LOL...I can't help it....I've met both Joey and Ross many times....buffoonery at it's finest! Eric Adams is wasting his time in that band....

Pagan, I had an old Saxxon lp (yes, that black thing with the grooves in it) and it totally rocked. I wonder why they never caught on in the US. They were only a step below the Judas Priest and Iron Maiden level, and they did rock quite well.

I suggest you lay off the crack pipe man. How many of these bands have you actually heard ? The only bands anywhere near a Black or Death Metal sound in that list were DESTROYER666 and DESASTER....

As a newbie my friend, I suggest you refrain from the antagonistic comments. Not a good way to be welcomed into this board.

I've heard of all of those bands. I've been playing in metal bands for 22 years. There's not many metal bands I haven't heard of.

By classic metal I meant bands that played the genre of music and had a modicum of success here in the States. How many of those bands you mentioned, aside from Manowar, have played anything larger than a club here?

As for Maiden, they are included in my list, so why you thought I didn't think they were metal I have NO idea.

Here's a friendly hint to help you insure your stay in these forums is a pleasant one. Don't verbally attack those that you do not know...in fact, don't verbally attack anyone in here at all. I've probably been playing metal since you were in grade school, so chill out a little. We like to come in here to relax, not to be confrontational.

Then you obviously need a new expert because what he writes about HM in here displays that he knows nothing. Denying the status "Classical Heavy Metal" to the above bands is beyond ignorant.

Hello Mister knowitall... I´m 34 years and I´ve been active in the scene since more than a decade myself so come off your high horse. I´m only passing by anyways as I have a life and a record label to deal with, I have no time to sit in places like this and hold elaborate discussions. However, your above ignorate statement about "Classic Metal" irritated me to the point of speaking up. What has commercial success in the USA (or anywhere) to do with being classical Metal ? Since when is good music rewarded with $$ ? You as a musican would know best that the only way to make $$ on music is the bend over for trends and play what the brainless masses demand. Which is what the record industry makes them demand by setting up a new trend. Classic Metal has always been standing OUTSIDE this machinery which is why big labels usually stay away from it. There´s very few exceptions to this rule.

So you´ve been playing Metal for 22 years... What bands have you been in ? Did you ever record something that might´ve made it into my collection ? Or is your career playing in cover bands at your buddies parties ?

I don´t know where I ever mentioned MAIDEN on this board, would you confuse that with my rant on PRIEST...?

Pagan

Do you realize you've posted six times, and each and every one of them has been an attack on me? What's your problem?

First of all, I don't claim to be any "Mr. Know It All". Not in the least, I was responding to your obnoxiousness in kind, which was ridiculous because it lowered me to that level.

I'm not ignorant in the least. I've said this in the other thread already, this is not supposed to be the "be all, end all" of polls. If I were to include every band in polls that was relavent to the topic, the list would be six pages long. It's just a lighthearted poll to pass the time. "Lighthearted" being the key word.

Sorry, but I passed playing covers at my buddy's parties years ago. Anyone on this board who owns a copy of my band's CD will tell you that, but I really don't feel the need to justify myself to you.

As for the only way to make money being bending over for trends, why don't you ask Rush, Dream Theater or any other band like that that's enjoying success if they've ever bent over?

I have a life too, my friend. Surprise, surprise, you're not the only one. There's no need for you to insult the board or the people on it like you have been doing. If you are just passing by, why must you be on the attack constantly?

PS - You mentioned Maiden in your first post, go back and read it.

PSS - The word is "ignorant", not "ignorate"

LIVESAY RULES! ;) MOST of the members on the board are proud Livesay CD holders...

Pagan's style is very 80s-style metal.. thats why we like it so much on here.. because we are all so much into the 80s!

But my husband's band plays death metal, BlackGoat.. and I like it as well... but not the 80's stuff... I guess that's why I don't
know alot of the bands that you are mentioning :(

Why must you hate manowar pagan? That's just plain odd. Manowar is the best Metal band of all time. (Besides judas priest) Even if their lyrics are a bit immature you have to admit some songs are good. :) And the new JP line up isnt that good. I'm seeing them in boston this OCT. :P

I don't hate Manowar, Nuge. I just find them comical. It's called an opinion. Should I ask you, "why must you like Manowar, Nuge? It's just odd." Why is it odd? If everyone all liked the same thing, this would be a BORING world, wouldn't it?

I have reasons for finding them comical. I moved in the same circles with them for awhile. I've jammed with Ross. He was the most level headed of them. Eric? Great singer, but I can't take someone seriously when they speak in rhyme onstage. As for Joey, can he ever write a song without the words "ride" "march" "vengeance" "kill" or "hail" in it? It's almost as if he locks himself in a closet with a bunch of Conan comics and comes out with an album. As a bassist, I don't appreciate his style of playing either. He plays the instrument like a guitarist would.

It's just, like I said, comical. Of course they have some good songs. I happen to love "Fighting The World" and "Carry On".

As for the Priest, the lineup they have now - talent wise - is awesome. They just haven't figured out how to write songs together yet! Tipton writes all the lyrics, and they are a joke. The new album blows chunks.

See? Even though I love the band, I know when they suck!

lol I didn't mean it in a bad way I was just wondering why you didn't like them. Now I see lol. I still think Rob Halford is better than ripper owens. And yes demolition blows massive chucks! Sorry for the misunderstanding

Pagan

No misunderstanding, my friend... :)

Ripper cannot be compared with Halford. Rob is a God amongst mere mortals! I can't wait for the inevitable reunion! Now that would be something....Halford goes back to Priest, and they embark on a tandem world tour with Maiden. I would die....
