View Full Version : Your best metal concert in the 80s
This is another question I once asked and only had one or two responses. What was the best metal show you ever saw? This is another tough one if you attended a lot of shows like I did. But, for me, there is one that stands out.
The Texxas Jam 1986 (I think that was the year). I was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Tx in July. There was around 100,000 people there and it was unbelievbly HOT (they estimated it to be over 120 degrees on the field). I was near the stage the entire day. The bands were Van Halen (w/ Sammy Hagar, the first year he was iin the band), Scorpions, Dio, Poison, Keel, Metallica, and BTO. It was the longest party I had been to, up to that point!
The aftermath was the fact that my pale skin was blistered!! I mean that I was blistered in places I had never even had a sunburn on. But it was worth it!
Okay, who's next?

That's easy! It was AC/DC back in '89. I was deaf for two days. Cinderalla opened for them and they were no slouches themselves...
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
Best? That's easy.....Dio/Megadeth/Savatage.
Dio's stage show was F*cking incredible....lasers, lights, and Dio himself. I remember him walking out on stage and saying it was good to be back home. The crowd went absolutely crazy. I don't know how such a powerful voice comes out of such a small person.
Megadeth was awesome too....incredibly LOUD!!!
I wasn't to familiar with Savatage at the time but nonetheless I was impressed with their show.

Iron Maiden opening for Judas Priest. Maiden on the "Number of the Beast" tour, and Priest on the "Screaming for Vengeance" tour. I could have died a happy man that night!
I have to admit those are some killer shows, all of them! I forgot that Maiden opened for Priest when they first toured America, I don't think they have opened for anyone else since that tour! Hey, Not Man, Dio and I are the same height. I have people tell me all the time that I am too little to be as loud as I am. But, Dio does have a powerful voice (whereas I'm just loud).

Me, sing? No Not Man, I am not musically talented in any way, especially as a singer. All I meant was that people know when I'm around (I'm really not that loud). And believe me, I am not comparing myself to Dio. We just happen to be the same height. I've been a huge fan of his since his Rainbow days. Bytedog, you have seen some awesome concerts!

cultleader 3-30-01, 10:17 PM The best concert by far was "Operation Rock-n-Roll"in I think '91(when Operation Desert Storm was going on)It was Metal Church,Dangerous Toys,Motorhead,Alice Cooper,And Judas Priest.I'll never forget that one,I slept out for tickets,it was a total blast!(Alice is King)
Oh and by the way,I'm a singer, been in four bands since I was 18 and am currently putting a new one together.Just had to add that.

I'd have to say Alice Cooper or WhiteSnake with Steve Vai.
Great Shows, Front row for both

Ayla
Hello Ayla, I haven't seen you around for quite awhile. Welcome back! Great concerts, both of them!
Not Man, Yea, I have heard of Elf (I know that was Dio's band before he joined Rainbow). I can't recall ever hearing any of their music though. Dio has put out some amazing material throughout his career, from Man On The Silver Mountain to Heaven And Hell to Holy Diver to his most recent cd. Ever since I first heard him, I have been amazed by the power of his voice and will always be a fan! <--My Dio tribute!

Club: Cinderella 2 weeks before thier first album came out, I saw them in a roller rink. They only advertised for like 2 days, so thier was only about 90 people their. Most were there to see the opening band, who were local "stars". But Cinderella blew me away. After the show, thier van was broke down, so they were hanging out, and me and my buddy Brian talked to them for a while. Cool guys. I saw them about 12 more times over the next few months before they hit it big and went on tour with Bon Jovi. Saw them again last year with Poison, they were better than ever.
Large venue: Either KISS on the Reunion tour, or Tesla/Def Leppard on the 3rd show of the HYSTERIA tour. That was before the CD was HUGE and they were just damn GREAT! Of course, being the KISS freak that I was, the reunion was the best concert I had been to, up until I saw PRINCE last year.

Sal Collaziano 4-03-01, 10:25 AM Well. I didn't get to go to many. Maybe 4. They were almost always Metallica. My best must have been Metallica and Queensryche - but that was probably 1990. Otherwise, it WOULD have probably been Anthrax and Ozzy - but I missed Anthrax. So, that was a disappointment. Ozzy was great, but I really wanted to see Anthrax. The Metallica concert was "...and Justice for All". Queensryche did their Operation: Mindcrime as an opener. What a great concert that was...

The loneliness just fades away
thoughts of you just memories
no cryin now for what we're missin
time won't forget what you meant to me
my favorite Metal concerts were:
Slayer w/ Overkill and Motorhead
Slayer w/ Megadeth and Anthrax (early 90s)
and my all time favorite concert (front row and my 16th birthday) Anthrax w/ Helloween and Exodus
Most of the other concerts that I went to in the 80s were more along the lines of "Glam" (Poison, Warrant, Bullet Boys, Cinderella, Tesla, Whitesnake, Ratt, Great White... etc....)
Good times!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//roll.gif

lazy boy 4-07-01, 11:29 PM My favorite was Blue Oyster Cult in a bar near Minneapolis in the late '80s. Before the show their bass player Joe Bouchard told me I'd have to take a step back from the stage or he'd hit me in the head with his bass (I think he meant accidentally). Their music was awesome that night. And loud - I could feel the air coming off the speakers.
For a stadium, Metallica on their And Justice For All tour. Hammett played Little Wing by Hendrix for his guitar solo. I remember kickin' back (pretty partied up) towards the end of the show, and everybody in the entire audience was pumping their fists up in the air in unison with the rhythm of the song. Reminded me of the movie The Wall.
Dio was pretty good, but we went to see him right after Viv Campbell left the band. Don't remember who the new guitarist was, but he shot laser beams out of his axe and killed a mechanical spider.
Deep Purple was also memorable - Richie Blackmore with a purple spotlight on him, wearing a big black hat, playing freaking Beethoven.
The best I ever saw though was Stevie Ray Vaughan. He died on my birthday the same year as we saw his concert. I'm one of those people who never dances unless I've got like a twelve pack in me, but I was dancin' that night. Man, that guy was so far beyond great - well into the unbelievable category. I remember hearing him getting interviewed on the radio one night, and then he played a little something - just himself. Sounded like a whole damned band. He could play rhythm and lead at the same time, man, blows my mind.
I think I'll go listen to Couldn't Stand the Weather now http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

I saw them with Skid Row... great show!! That was the first and last time I got to see Sebastian Bach live

I used to work for a sound company in the mid 90's and we did sound for B.O.C in this little concert club/bar in central Ohio, they were some of the most arrogent idiots I've ever met. They had an attitude like they were still big rock stars even though they were playing a bar.We did Quiet Riot that same year,in the same place and they were so great to work for,we hung out with them after the show and had a great time.

I forgot two other great shows. Pantera with Skid Row. Skid Row I think is one of the most underrated band live. They absolutely ****ing KILLED live. When they started playing I REMEMBER YOU, they had a little feedback. Bach stops teh band and starts screaming at teh sound board guys, saying "These kids paid $20 each to see us play and your incompetance is ****ing it up for them, get your shit together or ****ing LEAVE!" Great show.
Other fantastic show was Sepultura, Alice in Chains, and OZZY on the "No More Tours" Tour. A fat guy fell on my leg while moshing to Sepultura, and I had to sit for the rest of the show.
Dont forget the Queensryche EMPIRE tour. That rocked! THey were so tight. Great live band. Suicidal Tendancies opened up for them. GREAT SHOW!
